I hope they have her smile, Kiba thought suddenly as Hinata smiled up at him in a silent greeting. At five months pregnant Kiba was glad she didn't feel the need to get up from her seat to welcome him home. Finding a comfortable position to sit in was starting to become an ordeal. Kiba much preferred that she and the baby stayed comfortable over anything else.
Kiba flopped down to sit beside her, hand hovering over her belly as he looked for permission to touch. Hinata raised her own hand to cover his and drew his fingers down to the curve of her belly. Kiba leaned down to quickly kiss her baby bump and then leaned up to kiss his wife.
Their kiss was gentle and soft, a welcome and a hello all in one. They'd had enough practice by now that Hinata didn't nick her lips or tongue on his sharp fangs. They kissed until the need for air demanded they pull away.
Hinata's smile was small but honestly pleased, and her joy was infinitely precious to him. Again, he was struck by the desire that their baby would inherit that lovely smile. Kiba hadn't cared whether they were having a son or a daughter as long as they were healthy and strong. That was still true. Inuzuka didn't place a lot of weight on their firstborn being male or female.
Kiba also didn't care what they looked like. It was unlikely that their baby would have both the Byakugan and Inuzuka fangs. He didn't have a preference if they arrived with the white eyes of the Byakugan or tiny Inuzuka fangs, or even failed to express either of their bloodline limits at all. It happened sometimes when two strong bloodline limits met. Their baby could still be a perfectly powerful ninja without them.
Hinata's smile though. Kiba was honestly starting to hope that their baby had his wife's gentle smile. The idea of being the recipient of that smile times two made his heart flop over dangerously in his chest.
Kiba lowered his head to nuzzle into his wife's pregnant belly. Hinata didn't stop him. She rested her hand in the thick mop of his hair and scritched at the sensitive spot behind his left ear encouragingly. Kiba grinned against her belly.
Hinata liked it when he lavished attention on their unborn baby. Sometimes her face still turned bright red with embarrassment when he showered her in his rough affection, but that embarrassment never extended to Kiba saying hello to their baby. She was always happy and pleased that he cared for them so much already.
Kiba had to be careful not to over do it. Hinata was not inclined to tell him when she needed a break. It was a good thing that Kiba's nose was as sharp as it was, and that Hinata's scent was more honest than the words that came out of her mouth. He was becoming particularly attuned to the slightly sour smell of her discomfort.
Hinata's fingers paused in their gentle scritching and Kiba looked up at her face questioningly. Her eyes were slightly wider than usual and Kiba lifted his head off her belly to ask if something was wrong. Hinata shook her head silently and guided his hand around to a different spot on her belly.
Kiba kept his hand where she had indicated, but opened his mouth again to ask if she was okay. Hinata put a finger to his lips and shushed him. Kiba was slightly irritated, but he kissed her finger and silently waited for her to explain.
Seconds ticked by slowly and Hinata gave no indication of explaining. Kiba was getting ready to open his mouth again and ask when he felt a soft nudge against his fingertips. He could barely feel it. If he hadn't been waiting in concentrated silence he probably wouldn't have noticed.
Kiba looked up at Hinata questioningly and she nodded back at him with that small smile he loved. His breath escaped his mouth in an awed exhale of surprise. That was their baby. They were kicking hard enough for him to be able to feel it through the protective layer of Hinata's belly.
Kiba wanted to feel it again. With Hinata's nod of permission he pushed her shirt up far enough to bare her baby bump to the open air and rested his cheek against her belly where he had felt that first nudge. He waited. Kiba could be patient for their baby to say hello again. He could wait all day if Hinata allowed him.
Without the fabric of Hinata's shirt in the way, he was able to feel the soft kick against the sensitive skin of his cheek even more distinctly. Kiba kissed the patch of skin where he had felt their baby and grinned to feel another kick against his lips.
Hinata laughed quietly and he lost the ability to feel those soft kicks when her body shook with her amusement. Kiba was not disappointed that his interaction with their baby had stopped. He would have another chance to say hello and feel the growing strength of their baby.
Kiba never wanted to try and curb his wife's happiness. He basked in the sound of her quiet giggles and showered her belly with wet kisses to show his own appreciation. He was openly pleased with her happiness and wanted her to know it.
Hinata had spent too much of her life trying to hide and keep the things that made her happy a secret in fear that they would be taken away from her. She didn't need to do that any more. Kiba wanted to see all of her shy smiles and quiet laughter so that he could share in her happiness.
Kiba was lucky that the easiest way he'd found to encouraging Hinata to smile was showing her how much he loved her. He silently promised that Hinata would never have room to doubt how much he loved her or their baby.
