Work Text:
It’s been three months since the Phoenix Foundation cut all ties with the government, ever since the nano trackers and everything they brought to light, Mac, Riley, Bozer, Desi, Matty, and even Russ wanted nothing to do them. And doing missions they want to do, and not what they were ordered to do, was much better for them, mentally and physically. But when Matty got an encrypted email from her friend in the FBI hinting that someone close to one of her team members was alive, everyone was shocked when they saw Evan, Desi’s fiancé was alive and being held captive by a terrorist group in Afghanistan. This is where our story starts.
MAC’S HOUSE – THE NIGHT BEFORE THE RESCUE
Sitting around the campfire, together as a group, a family, everyone had their worries about the mission, but they didn’t want to think about it, they wanted to spend time together, drink beer, and talk about the past. Feeling the half empty beer bottle in his hands, Mac stared into the fire while he listened to everyone speak about their lives and mistakes. They all heard Desi’s snuffle and watched her wipe her stray tear away, Riley scooted closer to her and wrapped her arm around her to comfort her.
“You, okay?” she asked, looking at her badass coworker
Desi nodded and felt her lip quiver, “The day I heard Evan ‘died’ I didn’t leave my bunk for a week, it was the worst week of my life, and now that he’s alive, I can’t but think, if while I was crying and staying in bed, if I could’ve found him.”
“Hey,” Bozer said, moving over to her other side, “Don’t think that, you were grieving, and couldn’t have known if he was alive.” he said, gently touching her leg
She wiped another tear away, “I can’t stop wondering, will he remember me?”
Riley shrugged, “You’ll know tomorrow,” she said, looking over at Mac through the low flamed fire, “Right, Mac?”
Shifting his focus towards his friend, he nodded, “Right, and no matter what happens, Evan is coming home.” Mac said, firmly
Desi nodded as did Riley and Bozer; giving his bottle a swirl, Mac swallowed the rest of his beer before clicking his tongue and standing up, then walking into the house. Riley watched him disappear into the house and felt something nag at her to go check on him. Gently rubbing Desi’s leg, she gave her a light smile before getting up and walking into the house to find Mac grabbing another beer from the old, duct tape covered, fridge.
Setting her beer bottle on the kitchen counter, Riley looked at her coworker and lightly bit her lip, “Mac, are you okay?” she asked, softly
Closing the fridge, he gave her a confused look as he removed the cap from the bottle, “Yeah, why wouldn’t I be?”
“Well,” she said, taking a small step towards him, “We just found out about Desi’s presumed dead fiancé is actually alive. It’s got to be a lot on you.”
Mac shrugged, “I mean, yeah, a little bit, but it’s not like I didn’t know.” he said, bring his fresh beer to his lips
Riley looked at him shocked, “You knew?”
“Yeah, she told me about him on a mission a while back.”
“You didn’t tell me?” she asked, slightly hurt
He swallowed his beer, “It wasn’t my story to tell, besides, Desi asked me not to tell anyone.” Mac said, leaning against the counter
Riley licked her lips, “Mac...”
Coming into the house, Desi spotted her two friends in the kitchen and gave them each a small smile as she dropped her empty beer bottle in the trash, “Thank you guys for having me over, I’ll see you guys tomorrow.” she said, giving Mac a hug then Riley a hug
“Do you want me to drive you home?” he asked, holding his beer bottle
Desi shook her head, “I’ll make it to my apartment.” she said, rubbing her head on the way to the front door
As the door closed behind her, Bozer stepped into the kitchen and saw the slight tension between his friends, “I think I’m gonna call it a night as well, I’ll see you both tomorrow.” he said, giving his friends a quick hug before leaving
Standing in the quiet kitchen, Riley heard Mac click his tongue before walking over towards the living room and sitting on the couch. Opening the fridge, she grabbed herself another beer then walked towards the couch before sitting down next to her quiet friend. Sitting in silence, Mac took a swig of his beer then tapped his thumbs against the side of the bottle before looking at his reflection in the TV screen.
He let out a sigh, “I’m scared.” Riley said, softly
Looking over at the woman next to him, Mac angled his eyebrows, “Of what?” he asked, leaning forwards, placing his bottle on the coffee table
“Tomorrow, I can’t get over this feeling that something is going to happen.” she fiddled with her beer bottle
Licking his lips, Mac took her hand causing her to lick her lips, “I know, I’m scared too, but this is just another Tuesday for us, right?”
She chuckled, “Yeah.” Riley said, looking at Mac with glossy eyes
“All I know, is that me, Desi, and a tac team are wheels up tomorrow at six in the morning, it should be dark by the time we get there, rescue ops are better at night, low detection.” he explained, as he rubbed his eyes
Riley swallowed thickly, “You need to promise you you’ll come home.”
Mac heard the worry in her voice, “Rile’s...”
“I’ve already lost so much, I can’t lose you too.” she said, feeling a tear stream down her cheek
Turning his body towards her, he gently wiped her tear away as he cupped her cheek, “Hey, you’re not going to lose me, tomorrow is going to tough, but I’m coming home, I promise.”
Looking at him with tears in her eyes, Riley licked her lips, “I love you, Angus MacGyver.”
He smiled softly, “I love you, Riley Davis.”
As the distance between each other closed, their lips touched and they both melted into each other’s arms. Resting his hand against her waist, Mac felt her arms loop around the back of his neck and felt her straddle his lap. The taste of beer and salt from her tears was all they could taste, but it didn’t bother either of them. Getting to his feet, Mac felt Riley’s legs wrap around his waist and lightly turned his head to kiss her from another angle. Walking down the hallway, he got to his bedroom where he kicked the door closed and felt a smile form on the Riley’s lips. The rest of the night was full of emotion, love, and worry, but they focused on each other and nothing else.
THE NEXT MORNING – THE WAR ROOM
While going over the plan with everyone including the tac team, Riley hacked into a satellite and got a bird's eye view of the compound that held Desi’s fiancé. Giving the run-down of their entry and exit points of the compound, Mac gave everyone clear instructions to take things slow, going quiet was for the best, if they got caught, who knows what they would do to Evan.
“... we’re not leaving until the hostage is safe, am I clear?” Mac asked, firmly
The tac team gave him a nod, along with Desi, Riley, Bozer, Russ, and Matty, “Me and Desi will meet you guys at the landing strip, it’s five miles from the compound so when we arrive, silencers on, and night vision on. If they find out were there, they could kill Evan.”
“The chopper on the roof will take you guys to my private airstrip, there, you will board a plane and meet Mac and Desi at the landing strip. Get going.” Russ said, giving the final order
Looking at Desi, Mac gave her light nod, “We should go get ready.”
Giving him a nod, she walked towards the exit of the war room with Mac on her heels, watching them walking down the hallway through the glass windows, Riley felt her stomach twist and turn, but took a deep breath to calm her anxiety. In the armory, Desi put her vest on then her holster on her hip before grabbing a rifle from the wall. Tightening his vest, Mac grabbed a bag with everything he’d need and a little black box with their comms inside. Handing one to Desi, they each put one in their ears before testing the channel.
“Comms check, you read me?” he asked, giving her a thumbs up
Desi nodded, “Loud and clear, ready?”
With the bag handing off his shoulder, Mac gave her nod before following her out of the armory and into the hallway, towards the front door building leading to a black SUV.
“Mac, can you hang back for sec?” Riley asked, jogging from around the corner
“Yeah...” he said, after seeing Desi’s nod
Waiting for her to get outside the building and into the SUV, Mac gave Riley a slight smile before feeling her take his hand, “About last night...”
Riley shook her head, “I wanted it, and I’m glad it happened, come back home, okay?” she smiled, softly
Looking around the hallway, Mac closed the distance between them and gave her a soft kiss, “I’ll see you later.”
“I love you.”
He nodded, “I love you, too.” he said, feeling the contact from their connected hands disappear
Watching him hop into the SUV outside the building, Riley felt her breath hitch and gently placed her hand over her heart. Closing her eyes, she took a deep breath and saw flashes of last night bounce around in her head. The way they helped each other take each other’s clothes off, his soft kisses against her neck, his slightly rough hands against her skin, hearing his soft moans mix with hers while they made love, it was everything she wanted and more, he was her person and she was his. Walking back to the war room after calming herself down, Riley found Bozer speaking with Matty and Russ about the mission and a possible raise, which Russ shot down immediately. Picking up her rig, Riley sat down in one of the chairs and continued to watch over the compound until Mac, Desi, and the tac team arrived.
ON THE PLANE – DESI CAN’T KEEP HER LEG FROM BOUNCING
Sitting in front of his anxious friend, Mac turned his head slightly which caught her attention, “I’m okay, I just want to hold him in my arms.”
He gave her a soft smile, “Evan was good to you, wasn’t he?”
Desi smiled and nodded, “He was the love of my life, and I’m sorry for the way I’ve treated you.”
Mac nodded, “Me too.” he said, rubbing his thumb against the leather seat
“So, you and Riley?” she said, with a smirk
“How...”
“I saw the way you two were looking at each other this morning, not to mention the way she stopped you in the hallway before we left, just make her happy, okay?”
Mac smiled and nodded, “I will.”
AFGHANISTAN – FIVE MILES FROM THE COMPOUND
Once the plane landed, Mac and Desi met up with the tac team and they all got into the military vehicles they were provided with at the airstrip. While on the ride, they went over the plan one last time and got updates from everyone back at the Phoenix. Now the anxiety was setting in for Mac, he didn’t want to die, he couldn’t leave Riley, they were just starting their lives together.
“Okay, you’re five minutes out to the compound, you guys ready?” Matty asked, through comms
They all nodded, “Ready.” Desi said, ready to get her fiancé back
“Ready.” Mac said, wanting to get back home to Riley and his family
“Ready.” Riley said, softly, wanting everything to go over well
Turning the headlights off the vehicles, they came to a stop behind a large sand mountain before getting out and getting ready. Watching everyone tighten the silencers on the ends of their guns, Mac let out a deep breath and watched Desi put a pair of night vision goggles on over her head. Making their way over the sand mountain then down towards the large compound, they used a pair of wire cutters to cut through the fence and into the compound.
Tapping his comms, Mac quietly spoke, “Rile’s, can you look for any heat signatures?”
“Yeah, one sec.” the sound of her keyboard made him smile slightly
“I’m counting at least twenty terrorists, there are four in the building right in front of you.”
Nodding at her words, Mac looked at the team, “Okay, you five, take this building, me, Desi, and you three will take other one.” he said, quietly
Watching the first team walk along the edge of the building, Mac, Desi, and the other team made their way to the other building, “Okay, Mac, the building you’re headed to has two guys inside.”
“Copy that, Rile’s.” Mac said, coming to a stop outside the little building
Glancing through the crack in the window, Desi spotted two guys, sleeping in chairs with their AK’s leaning against their chairs, “They’re sleeping.” she said, to the three tac team members
Watching them slowly crack open the front door, Mac heard two silenced shots, one for each of their skulls. He knew this mission was going to get messy, but he didn’t know it was going to be this messy. Taking one last look inside the building, he saw a little bit of blood splatter on the wall and a small pool of blood on the floor.
“Mac, are you okay? Do you copy?” Riley asked, worriedly
Shaking his head and blinking his eyes, he nodded, “Yeah, sorry, I think I zoned out, where to next?”
“There are four more out by the fire pit.” she said, seeing the large, moving heat signature
Desi gave him a nod and she walked with the tac team towards the open area, “On my count,” she said, raising her silenced rifle, “3, 2, 1.”
Mac heard another four silenced shots then saw the four dead terrorists lying dead in the sand, their bodies visible by the fire. Meeting up with the tac team that infiltrated the large building, Desi asked if they found anything but they only shook their heads.
“He has to be here; we need to find him.”
“Uh, guys, I’ve got movement by the front gate.” Riley said, frantically
Peaking around the corner, Mac saw one terrorist looking towards the four bodies on the ground, “Shit, looks like we just got caught.”
“شخص ما هنا!” the terrorist yelled, translated ‘someone’s here.’
Lights to the compound came on and four more men came rushing out of another building with their AK’s in hand. Quickly getting into the cleared building, Mac, Desi, and the rest of the team took some time to come up with something. Looking around the house, Mac saw the stairs leading up and gestured to a few of the tac team members to go up.
“Mac, talk to us.” Bozer said, through comms, Riley was anxiously tapping her foot
The sound of gunshots rang through the comms and everyone in the war room jumped at the loud sound. Riley thought of the worst, they got trapped and shot to death, the love of her life, gone in a fire fight he didn’t even need to be in. But no, she couldn’t let that be her only thought, maybe they were exchanging fire, fending off the terrorists while they freed Evan. Gunshots rang out for what felt like half hour, but was only two minutes then complete silence, everyone held their breathes as they waited for some sort of news.
“Is everyone alright?” Desi asked, looking around the dark, bullet hole filled room
“All good.” the tac team said
Riley waited to hear his voice, she needed to hear him, “Mac?”
“I’m okay.” he said, with his back against the wall
Letting out a sigh of relief, Riley placed her hand over her pounding heart and sighed, “Hey, are you okay?” Desi asked, kneeling in front of him and touching his shoulder
He swallowed hard, “Just shaken up, that’s all.”
Touching her ear, Desi spoke, “Riley, any more heat signatures?”
“One in the building those other men came from, but it’s faint.”
Mac stood up, “They’re holding him underground.” he said, peaking out the broken window
Leaving the riddled building, he walked with Desi and the tac team towards the final building and bashed through the front door. Desi didn’t think twice, she ran for the bed in the corner of the building and flipped it over to find nothing, everyone else searched the building but still found not secret hole leading underground.
“Evan!” she yelled, worriedly
Hearing two soft bangs, Mac looked at the table in the middle of the room and forcefully flipped it out of the way, “Help me with the carpet.” he said, grabbing the corner
Desi and two other members of the tac team helped roll the carpet up against the wall and saw a piece of wooded. Moving it out of the way, Mac clicked the button of the back of his flashlight and saw a five-foot hole with a dirty looking man with a long beard, hair, dirty clothes, with shackles on his wrists, and rag shoved in his mouth.
Jumping down in the hole, Mac heard Desi land behind him and gently pulled the rag out of his mouth, “Evan?” she asked, softly
He nodded and felt tears escape his eyes, “Desiree?”
Picking the lock to the shackles, Mac allowed them to hug, “I missed you so much.” Desi said, with tears in her eyes
“I thought you forgot about me.” Evan said, with his chin resting against her shoulder
Mac gently patted his back, “Mac, what’s the update?” Matty asked, needed to know what’s going on
He smiled, “We found him, we’re coming home.”
Everyone in the war room smiled, and Bozer gave Riley a hug, “We’re coming home.” Mac said, again, smiling at Desi and Evan
BACK AT THE PHOENIX – MEDBAY
After they all returned from their mission, Evan was greeted by Dr. Sandria and a few other Phoenix docs before he was brought in for some tests and much needed nutrients. Looking at her bearded fiancé sleep, Desi smiled and kissed his head before meeting Mac, and the rest of the team out in the hallway.
Hearing the door latch shut, she smiled and looked at Matty, “Thank you for helping me find him.”
Matty nodded and took her hand, “You’re welcome.” she smiled, softly
“If it’s okay, could I have some time off work, Evan’s going to need my full attention and I don’t want to leave him alone.”
Russ nodded, “It’s already taken care of, you’ll have five months off to take care of your fiancé, make sure he gets the help he needs and the love he deserves, I also have the some of the best therapists in the country willing to work with him, that is if he wants it.”
Desi smiled and gave him a hug, “Thank you, Russ.”
“You’re welcome, my dear.” he smiled
Riley smiled at her friend then looked up at Mac, she carefully took his hand and watched him come back to reality, “You, okay?” she asked, softly
He nodded, “Just glad it’s over.”
Nodding her head, she gently kissed his shoulder, “Me too.”
FIVE YEARS LATER – MAC AND RILEY’S BIG DAY
The thought of getting married has always been on Mac’s mind, it was just finding the right person he wanted to get married to, first, there was Nikki, she was cute, funny, and good with computers, but she got Mac shot and almost killed hundreds of thousands of people. Then, there was Nasha, she was such a lovely woman, very comforting, and gave Mac peace while away from the phoenix, but he couldn’t risk putting her life in danger because of his job. Then of course, there was Desi, badass, but she never trusted him, he thought about proposing but it only would’ve locked him in a horrible, unhealthy relationship. But now, Mac found the right person, the person he can the love of his life and the mother of their first child, he couldn’t wait to meet the little guy.
Standing at the altar, wearing a black tux, with Bozer, Russ, and Evan as his groomsmen, he held Riley’s hands as she stood in front of him wearing her beautiful, white, wedding dress that showed off her pregnant belly. Smiling at each other, Riley could feel the butterflies in her stomach but she didn’t care, she was marrying her best friend.
“Family and friends, thank you all for coming today to share in this wonderful occasion. Today we are here together to unite Angus MacGyver and Riley Davis in marriage.” the pastor said, looking at Mac, Riley, and everyone in the stands
“Do you Angus MacGyver, take Riley Davis to be your lawfully wedded wife, to live together in matrimony, to love her, comfort her, honor and keep her, in sickness and in health, in sorrow and in joy, to have and to hold, from this day forward, as long as you both shall live?”
He smiled and rubbed her hand, “I do.” he said, proudly
“And do you Riley Davis, take Angus MacGyver to be your lawfully wedded husband, to live together in matrimony, to love him, comfort him, honor and keep him, in sickness and in health, in sorrow and in joy, to have and to hold, from this day forward, as long as you both shall live?”
Riley smiled and gently squeezed his hand, “I do.”
Mac looked towards Bozer and picked up the ring, while Riley looked towards her mom who had the other ring, “Angus MacGyver and Riley Davis have chosen rings to exchange with each other as a symbol of their unending love. As you place this ring on Riley’s finger, please repeat after me. With this ring, I thee wed and pledge you my love now and forever.”
With the wedding ring at the tip of her finger, Mac smiled, “With this ring, I thee wed and pledge you my love now and forever.” he said, sliding the beautiful diamond ring on her finger
Riley wiped a stray tear away, “Riley, as you place this ring on Angus’s finger, please repeat after me. With this ring, I thee wed and pledge you my love now and forever.” the pastor said, looking at the lovely bride
“With this ring, I thee wed and pledge you my love now and forever.” Riley said, sliding the gold wedding band on his finger
The pastor smiled, “By the authority vested in me by the State of Los Angelas, I now pronounce you husband and wife. You may kiss the bride.”
Gently cupping her face, Mac stepped closer to her and their lips molded together. Bozer clapped and smiled at his newly wedded friends and looked over at Russ to see him wiping his tears away. Desi looked over at Evan and smiled at him, they knew one day, they’d get their happy ending too, just not today, today, was Mac and Riley’s happy ending.
The End.
