Work Text:

Big red shoes pitter pattered against the forest floor.

“Kacchan, c’mon!”

“Slow down, Zuku!”

The two small boys finally came to a stop in front of a pond with a small waterfall on the side. It was a beautiful little area that only they knew about. The boys had dubbed it their special meeting spot. They would usually meet at the park or each other’s houses, but this was a private spot that meant a lot to them.

Izuku waited until the blond was close enough behind him before turning around with a shy grin.

“Zuku, what is it? Why’d you wanna come here today? We haven’t come here in a while.”

Izuku looked down, his green eyes looked at his feet, stubby hands nervously behind his back, as if holding something.

“I- um, w-wanted to give Kacchan a gift.”

“Really?” Katsuki flushed a bit. Izuku nodded adorably, his viridian curls bouncing with the movement.

He slowly took the pale purple flowers from behind his back. He handed it- well, shoved it into his best friends’ hands.

Usually Katsuki didn’t like silly flowers, but seeing the other bashfully giving him some made his heart flutter.

“U-Um! Mom said it m-means that I admire you a-and your strength. And I do, Kacchan is amazing! I think Kacchan I-Is really cool!”

The blond was at a loss for words. No one had ever given him flowers before. “Is this why you didn’t want to come here?”

“I didn’t want Kacchan to see me growing the flowers here..”

“You.. grew them for me?” Katsuki had wondered why Izuku actively avoided their main spot whenever they were together. Part of the blond hurt at the thought that he didn’t wanna be here anymore.

Izuku nodded again, his cheeks flushed to the point where he looked like a strawberry. Katsuki bit his cheek.

“Uwaah-! No biting, Kacchan!”

He pulled away and hugged him. Izuku thought his little heart would explode since he knew his best friend didn’t like physical affection that much. Once they pulled away, Katsuki looked to the side. His red eyes scanning the other parts of the forest. Looking everywhere but him.

“Thanks.. Zuku.”

Izuku lit up instantly. “You’re welcome, Kacchan!”

That day had been a good day for the blond. He remembers returning home, still with a light flush on his cheeks.

His mom came out of the kitchen. “Welcome home, brat. How was your day with Izu?”

“It was fine.” He said, attempting to hide the flowers behind his back.

“Whatcha got there?” She inquired.

“Tch. It’s nothing!”

Mitsuki was unimpressed and crossed her arms with a smirk, staring down at the embarrassed child. “Brat, I know you’re hiding something behind your back.”

“Am not!”

“Katsuki.” The blond grumbled when he knew that there was no point in hiding them. Damn, his mother was smart.

He shyly got the flowers out from behind his back. “Zuku got me flowers, ma.”

Mitsuki was going to tease him when she saw what type of flowers they were. Since she was Inko’s best friend, she knew that the other knew about flowers. She loved to garden.

The flowers he held were Blue Stars. She cooed, making Katsuki blush more. She turned and went to tell her husband. Katsuki grumbled when he could hear her squeals from the kitchen.

Nevertheless, he went up to his room and sat on his bed. He placed the flowers there before going back downstairs to get a vase and water for them in his room. He didn’t know how to take care of flowers properly, but he’ll ask the hag later. Once they were in the safety of a vase by his window, he couldn’t help but feel that pounding in his heart again. It was always that same feeling that he couldn’t describe.

Part of him thought it was just happiness. He really had been happy when Izuku gave him the flowers. It was sweet and unlike any gift he had ever gotten from anyone.

“U-Um! Mom said it m-means that I admire you a-and your strength. And I do, Kacchan is amazing! I think Kacchan I-Is really cool!”

I admire you..

Katsuki flushed and groaned again. He wanted to do something for Izuku too. He thought about getting him flowers as well. Since Katsuki was the way he was, he was determined to get him the best damn flowers ever.

They walked together once again, a week later, to their meeting spot.

“Zuku. I got you something..”

Izuku’s big eyes were filled with curiosity and wonder, as he tilted his head in a cute way, as if asking a question.

“Kacchan got something for me?”

“Tch. Yeah. Close your eyes, silly Zuku.”

Izuku giggled in anticipation, but closed his eyes.

“Open your hands.” Izuku obediently did it as the blond boy placed the flowers in his hand.

“Open your eyes..”

The greenette opened his eyes and saw a mini bouquet of some white, clumpy looking flowers tied together by an orange string.

“I looked it up on ma’s computer. They’re Gardenias.”

Izuku remembered that that was the flower that his mom taught him about as well. He blushed as he remembered their meaning. He started to tear up as Katsuki swore he saw his eyes sparkle as the light reflected off of his glossy eyes.

“K-Kacchan.” He launched himself into Katsuki’s arms. His tiny hands grabbing at his shirt.

“Does.. does Kacchan really mean it?”

Katsuki felt his heart break when he heard the uncertainty in his voice. “Of course I mean it, Zuku! They aren’t for any other extra!” He pulled away and wiped the other boys’ tears, even though they didn’t stop.

“Stop crying..” He muttered sweetly as he put his small hands on Izuku’s face, using his thumbs to wipe the oncoming tears.

“C-Can’t help it.. Kacchan is so sweet to me.” He leaned in as the blond took his hand off of his face and kissed his cheek.

“T-Thank you, Kacchan!” His face lit up the entire area. He swore he even saw sparkles on his eyelashes as he closed his eyes with a happy grin.

From that point on, Katsuki had actually liked to get him flowers. Specifically the romantic-themed ones. Instead of all the time like he wanted, he left it to just every time it was the nerd’s birthday.

Seeing his big round eyes light up when he knew most of the flowers’ meanings made it all worth it.

Katsuki discovered that the feeling in his heart all this time was love. He knew Izuku was all he needed in his life.

Notes:

Blue Star: “Show a loved one that you recognize and admire their strength, determination and endurance.”

Gardenia: “They represent secret love or a way of saying "you're lovely." Gifting them is a sweet and romantic gesture, and a great way to tell someone how you truly feel.“
