Work Text:
It was a cold Friday evening at Nevermore. Some students were packing their bags, as they would have a week off and their parents decided to come pick them up for some family time.
The best friends of Ophelia Hall, however, would spend the break together, locked in their little world as their families made up excuses not to visit them. Although it hurt, both of them preferred it that way. For Larissa, it would be of no use going home only to hear her parents complain about her grades, her abilities, her life. It was exhausting, Larissa thought, the idea of hearing her mother rambling about all the wonderful things the blonde could achieve if she were smarter, prettier, smaller. She could, indeed, shapeshift into a shorter version of herself, but maintaining that form all day would be extremely exhausting, and she quite liked her height when her mother wasn’t around to criticize her for it.
Morticia, on the other hand, was her parents' perfect little child. She would get amazing gifts sent to her every chance they could, loving letters telling her how much they missed her and congratulating her for latest achievements. But, when it came for them to actually be present in her life, there was always an emergency business trip or a celebrity's birthday party they had to attend. And it was no different for that chilly break.
So, once again, there were just the two of them, scattered around their room as they heard the pitter-patter of the rain falling outside. Morticia loved a cloudier weather, but she had to admit the sudden change had frustrated her. She had planned to sneak out with Gomez and some friends, as they would be leaving for the break early the next morning and they wanted to spend some time together, but the thunderstorm ruined her plans.
Morticia had been seeing the Addams boy for a few months, yet for her they were nothing more than a fling. She had grown fond of him, that is true, and he was incredibly romantic, but there was not a real connection there, not from her part, at least. Still, the couple was seen as school royalty, as their Nightshade status made them extremely powerful and popular amongst the students.
Larissa had watched from afar what she thought was Morticia falling for the lover boy. They would spend more and more time together, going on secret dates and walking around the halls as if they were glued to each other, making out in the broom closet as if they were uncontrolled animals, and being praised for it if any of their friends found out. He was always performing big romantic gestures, declaring his love for her in the most dramatic way possible, and the shapeshifter hated to admit how sick she felt at every attempt she had experienced. She had been by Morticia’s side everyday since they were freshmen, but would always find a way to distance herself when the Addams came by. Larissa would not dare think about why, but her heart sank to her stomach every time she saw the couple together, so she did her best to avoid it.
“Issa,” Morticia began, her voice slightly sleepy. She was laid on her bed, legs up the wall and her head falling from the mattress, the tips of her dark black hair touching the ground. From that position, she was able to look at an upside down version of Larissa, who sat on the ground reading a book, her back against the frame of her bed. “do you want to do something? I think I’ll die of boredom if we don’t.”
Larissa laughed at the dramatic comment and paused her reading to look at the psychic.
“I don’t think there is anything to do, Tish. We are sort of confined to this room and Mrs. Smith took all our board games away after she caught you sneaking out last week.”
Morticia pouted at her roommate’s statement. Her little adventures had cost them several items, but she had never regretted them until then. She put her head to work, thinking of activities for such a dull evening. There had to be something fun they could do.
“I have an idea.” She said after a while. Larissa closed the book and Tish turned in bed, this time facing her upwards. “Let’s play truth or dare.”
The shapeshifter raised an eyebrow in response. They hadn’t played that game since they were freshmen, and it felt particularly silly to do that then, as seniors.
“Oh, don’t give me that look, it’s going to be fun! I know you don’t really want to be reading that dull book of yours.” Larissa sighed, as if to say she had been convinced, and Morticia grinned in response. “I’ll start. Truth or dare, Larissa?”
“You don’t seriously want to play that.” Morticia only gave her a whitered look in response. “Fine, truth.”
Morticia took her time to think of a question. After so many years sharing a room, it felt like the friends knew everything about each other, it was hard to find a question she hadn’t already asked. After a while, she found one, a topic Larissa had particularly avoided.
“How was your first kiss?” The metamorph scoffed and looked up at her roommate in disbelief. She was embarrassed, deep down, Morticia could tell by the sudden blush on her cheeks.
“What are we, twelve? This is such a stupid question.” She averted her eyes, as the chocolate orbs seemed to look a bit too deeply into her.
“You have to answer, Issa. It’s the rules.”
Larissa took a deep breath. She had never talked about that stuff with Morticia, or anyone, really. It was a part of herself she locked deep within her soul, and the blonde wasn’t sure she was ready to share it with someone. Not with Morticia Frump, of all people.
“I was thirteen. It was a silly dare, they spun the bottle and locked us in a closet for a few minutes. It was fun, but I never really talked to the person again.”
“What was his name?” Morticia asked, making Larissa’s heart sink to her stomach. The raven haired was at the edge of her seat, excited to know more about such a mysterious part of her roommate’s life. The blonde’s plans were different, though.
“I really don’t want to talk about it. Besides, it’s my turn. Truth or dare?” Morticia snorted, annoyed by the lack of information.
“Since you decided to be dull… Truth.”
Larissa took a while to think of the question. There was something she had wanted to ask her for a very long time, but never really had the nerve to. And that might be her only opportunity. She struggled a bit to phrase it, but, eventually, the shapeshifter asked her question.
“How was your first time?” Morticia’s playful smile slowly faded from her face. By the time Larissa had thought about her question, the psychic had shifted her position in bed, now sitting up, her back against the wall. She hugged her knees at the question and averted her eyes from the blonde’s.
“I have never really gotten there before.”
The metamorph’s jaw dropped in disbelief.
“But… how? You and Gomez…”
“Gomez and I are just a fling, Larissa. We fool around, that’s true, but I’m not a slut like everyone thinks. I don’t want to… do it unless I actually like the person I’m with.” Morticia had her hair falling around her face, like she was trying to hide herself. She had her head down, eyes fixed on a random tile of the wooden floor. Morticia looked small, fragile, and Weems frowned at how vulnerable the question had made her.
“I don’t think you’re a slut.” She made her way to the bed and crawled onto it, sitting next to her roommate. “It’s just… you two seem so in love.”
“He might be, but I’m far from it.” She confessed, shoulders squared as her heart skipped a beat. It felt almost illegal to be talking about that, actually expressing how she felt about her ‘boyfriend’. “I tried, for a while. But he’s not the one.”
“Why are you with him, then?”
Morticia took a second to really think about it. If she didn’t love him, there was really no reason for them to be dating. It had been so automatic that she never really questioned it.
“I guess I don’t have anything better to do.”
Larissa scoffed at the answer, an amused laugh escaping her mouth.
“Morticia, look at yourself. You are the prettiest girl in Nevermore, you could have anyone you want.”
The raven haired tucked her locks behind her ear and turned her head, eyes locked on Larissa’s, who had begun to regret that statement.
“Anyone?”
There was a sudden tension between them. Larissa had felt it before, subtly running through her spine once in a while when she was alone with her roommate. She did not know what it was, but it terrified her, and she wanted it gone.
“Y-yeah, every boy here is crazy about you, you know.” She stuttered. Why did she have to stutter? Larissa wanted to run out of the room and never return.
Morticia, however, only smirked at the comment, now apparently recovered from her sudden sadness. She was back to being Morticia Frump, the confident, unaffected Nightshade.
“Well, you’re quite a beauty yourself. Have you never thought about finding yourself a special person?”
“Not many people at Nevermore really pick my interest, actually.” She replied honestly, but her roommate didn’t buy it.
“Come on, there must be someone.” Larissa averted her eyes. It was much harder to do so when the psychic was so close to her, as Morticia could tell everything the blonde was feeling by the look on her face. “Who is he, Issa? You have to answer, you know, we’re still playing.” Weems shook her head, biting her lower lip to suppress her discomfort; she hated her roommate for asking so many questions. “What’s the matter? It is completely normal to like a boy from time to time.”
“Why do you always assume I’m talking about boys?” She bursted out, leaving her roommate speechless.
“I-I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to…”
“Forget it.” Larissa shrugged and turned away, ready to go back to her side of the room. Before she could, though, Morticia grabbed her wrist.
“Truth or dare, Issa?”
“I don’t want to play anymore.” Morticia grabbed her jaw, jerking it back so their eyes would meet. Weems swallowed hard at how determined the raven haired looked, her gaze almost hypnotizing.
“Truth or dare?” She asked slowly, her low voice almost like a purr. It had not been a question.
“Dare.” Larissa murmured with what was left of the air in her lungs.
Morticia raised her chin and tilted in bed, getting even closer to her roommate without loosening the grip on her jaw.
“I dare you to kiss me.” She smiled wickedly as Larissa’s eyes googled. Out of all the things that could come from the black-painted lips, that was the one the shapeshifter had least expected.
“What?”
“I can’t be the only one who feels this tension between us. I had never given it a name until now, but… I can suddenly see.” She let go of the pale jaw, moving her hand through Larissa’s cheeks and putting her blonde hair behind her ear.
“Morticia, you’re my best friend. We can’t…” Larissa stopped, the words escaping her mouth. She did not know how to feel. Soon, the smile painted on the dark lips faded, a more serious, almost hurt expression replacing it.
“I… I’m sorry, I was sure you felt the same.” Morticia frowned, letting her hand fall back on her lap. She shook her head, trying to ignore the intrusive thoughts. She had ruined everything. “This was stupid, I shouldn’t…” The psychic stood up, quickly moving across the room, the need to leave, to be away from Larissa, growing more and more.
“Morticia.” Her call was ignored. The raven haired was at the door, trying her best to unlock it as her hands shook. “Morticia.” She could hear the metamorph growing closer, and the psychic’s voice would become more desperate as she bursted apologies out. “Morticia.” The blonde was right behind her. The raven haired could hear her breathing, and it sent shivers down her spine. “Look at me, please.” Once again, Larissa was ignored. Morticia succeeded in unlocking the door, but, when she tried to quickly open it and run away, a strong hand closed it shut once more.
Larissa would not be ignored any longer. She grabbed Morticia’s arms and turned her on her feet, making her finally face her. The metamorph delicately tilted the psychic’s chin up and put her dark hair behind her ears, caressing her face tenderly.
“The game isn’t over before I complete my dare, remember?”
Before Morticia could say anything, Larissa leaned in and pressed their lips together in a loving kiss. Morticia’s whole body tensed up in shock, but it didn’t take long for her to give in, wrapping her arms around the blonde’s neck and gluing their bodies together as she allowed Larissa to deepen the kiss, one of the metamorph’s hands tightly gripping Morticia’s waist as the other ran through her dark hair.
It was ravishing, finally tasting each other after so long. Morticia wondered if that was what she had waited all her life for, that feeling. It was nothing like kissing Gomez, or any other boy, for that matter. Larissa felt real, right, like life had truly begun at that moment, her heart beating for the feeling of those lips on hers. She never wanted to stop.
Eventually, however, they had to catch their breaths.
Larissa glued their foreheads, her hands softly caressing Morticia’s waist as they had their eyes shut, still trying to normalize their heart rates and process what had just happened.
“I guess it might be a bit obvious now,” She began, a silly smile taking over her expression. “but I do feel the same, Tish. I have for a while now.”
