It’s always been you
They say wedding days are some of the most beautiful, but definitely some of the most stressful days in our entire lives. Though in Adrien’s humble opinion, that is definitely an understatement. Please throw whoever said that off a bridge. (He, of course, doesn’t mean this literally. After fighting all three versions of his father his humor turned a bit… let’s just say darker.)
Months of planning all come down to this one day, which had been approaching much faster than either of them could have imagined. If you had told him 7 years ago he’d be standing here he would have laughed. He used to think his father would control everything in his life. His career, his schedule, hell maybe even who he would be marrying when that time came around.
But with his dad overthrown, his mother awakened thanks to his amazing lady and now waking up on the day of his wedding, he almost couldn’t mask the tears of joy coming to his eyes. He held them back though, knowing he will need them the moment he would lay his eyes on her. But let’s not get ahead of ourselves. Now is a time to prepare for the celebration of his life.
His bachelors party the evening before had certainly been interesting. All the friends he made during his lycée time had been there. Nino (of course being the best man he basically planned the whole thing behind his back), Max, Nathaniel, Kim (who he had eventually forgiven after everything he had done to Marinette the year before he joined their class) and many others just to name a few. Hell, even Félix had been there, having arrived via the Eurostar together with his aunt. Their mothers certainly had a blast catching up with each other, which was mostly spent hugging each other and crying.
While it is not his style to drink a lot, something he definitely still held onto with his father’s ‘parenting skills’, he did enjoy his time to the bar they went to. They tried to get him to drink more than he did, but he managed to hold back. Which is a good thing because he cannot imagine the headache the rest of the group must have. He didn’t want to miss a single detail of this special day, so making sure he wouldn’t be hungover was at the top of his priority list.
He sighed softly, turning around and placed a hand on the other side of the bed. Their bed. Marinette had been swept away by the ladies of her group, obviously for her own bachelorette party. While they might be a young and modern couple, there were still a few traditions they really wanted to uphold. One of those was definitely not seeing each other the night before their wedding. While they didn’t believe in the whole ‘it brings bad luck’ gist, it was more to enjoy their last moment as an unmarried couple. While he did consider just swinging by as Chat Noir, Plagg was vehemently against it. He had a feeling Tikki had something to do with that, because normally Plagg is all about breaking the norm. He was thankful for that though, for it would make the moment even more special.
After being lost in his own thoughts for about 10 more minutes, he finally decided to get up. He had a wedding to prepare for.
All around her, people were hustling. Who knew everybody around her would be more stressed about her big day than Marinette herself. She sighed.
‘Might as well enjoy it while I can.’ She thought to herself. Alya was ordering people around, Juleka was steaming her dress for one last time, Rose did the finishing touches for everyone’s makeup and her mother was downstairs making sure everything was in order.
She felt her head getting turned by a gentle but firm hold on her chin. She blinked, looking up at Chloé. Yes it might come as a surprise, but Marinette did end up making up with Chloé. It had been a rocky road for both of them, but eventually they buried all past hurts and worked on building a new relationship. Chloé leaned back, tongue sticking out in concentration as she stared at Marinette’s face. She suddenly felt very self-conscious.
“Everything okay Chloé?” She asked, starting the feel nervous. Chloé hummed, grabbed something out of her huge makeup bag and telling Marinette to close her eyes. She did, feeling a cold liquid line being added to her eyelids. Chloé finished the eyeliner on both eyes before humming contently.
“There, now it’s perfect. Take a look.” She said, after fanning Marinette’s face to dry the eyeliner.
Sky blue eyes slowly blinked open, staring at her face. The makeup was subtle, which was just what she had asked for. Her hair had been pulled up into almost a messy bun, yet still had enough hold that it wouldn’t fly out when she would be dancing the night away. Her veil had already been clipped into her hair, the length reaching the middle of her back. She smiled widely at Chloé.
“Thank you Chloé. It’s perfect.” Chloé smiled back, glad to help out her friend. Marinette stood carefully, showing her look to the rest of the room. Everyone awed in amazement. Marinette almost felt herself blush at their reaction. Slowly she turned as her mother returned, having finished all the preparations downstairs. She could see the tears shimmering in her eyes.
“You look beautiful my dear. Are you ready to get in your dress?” Her mother asked, her hands shaking a tad as she laid them gently on her daughter’s cheek. Marinette smiled and nodded.
Adrien picked at his cuffs, barely keeping it together. In just a moment he would be walking through these big doors in front of him and wait for the love of his life to show up. A moment they had dreamed about since they got together. He felt gently, slender fingers pry his hands away from them.
“While I know how nerve wrecking it is to be standing here, that is no reason to be ruining your outfit quite this early.” His mother said with mirth, a twinkle of mischief in her eyes. Adrien smiled gently. He knew he could be quite fidgety when he was really nervous, something he got from her. She had been the only one able to bring him out of those episodes, neither his father nor Nathalie ever managed that.
He held out his arm for her to take. While not completely traditional, he had talked with Marinette about his mother walking him down the aisle. She had missed so much in his life and he wanted to make sure she would never forget this. Marinette agreed full heartedly, knowing this is also an important moment for him.
The doors opened and they walked in. All inside rose to greet him as he walked down with his mother at his side. He stopped at the end, his mother kissing his cheek before moving to her seat in the front row. He turned to the pastor, nodding to him before turning and facing the door. The piano started playing. He took in a deep breath.
‘This is it.’ Adrien thought as the piano started playing.
It was you when we first met eyes
It was you in the city lights
It was you when I almost lost control
All the bridesmaids and groomsmen started walking down the aisle together. The men’s black tuxes matching perfectly with the bridesmaids’ dark green dresses. Adrien smiled as he thought back to when they were planning the wedding. At first they were considering red tuxes for the men to match with the green dresses, to honor both of their roles as miraculous holders and co-guardians. But then they figured it would look a little silly, almost like Christmas colors. So, they settled on black and green outfits, with red ties for the men and red flowers for the women.
It was you through the darkest times
It was you that would make me shine
It was you that I hold on tight
His thoughts were flooded with memories. Their darkest times always brought them closer together. When they first started fighting, when the miraculous were stolen, finding out his father was the villain in all of this, Lila’s lies and much more. Yet they always clung to each other, finding support in each other’s light. Mostly he clung to her.
It's always been you
He saw the doormen reach for the handles. He held his breath, tears threatening to fall.
So let the doors just open wide
‘Cause standing there is my whole life
I’ve waited long enough to finally say I do
Their eyes met, and he couldn’t hold back anymore. He choked on his breath seeing her there. Her parents on both sides, each holding an arm. Her mother wearing a beautiful red dress, her dad wearing a neat black tuxedo. But all he could see was her.
She looked beautiful. Makeup simple but classic, hair in an elegant messy bun, eyes shining with unshed tears and a beautiful bouquet of roses in her hand. The dress was stunning. An off the shoulder A-line, the bodice tight with lace details. The skirt flowed freely, moving naturally with her steps as she and her parents move forwards. All there preparing to rise in attendance of the bride.
And let the people on both sides
See you there and all arise
To see us hand in hand
I swear I always knew
It's always been you
His hands were trembling behind his back. He took a deep breath, trying not to break down. He had tried to prepare for this moment, but there is no way to prepare for the actual thing.
Marinette felt giddy with nerves. Her papa on the right and her maman on the left. Walking towards her future. She clutched bouquet tightly, her engagement ring glistening in the sunlight streaming in through the windows. Her papa squeezed her hand, knowing the nerves that were wrecking her body and mind. She glanced up at him and gave him a gentle smile. She turned back, looking in the eyes of the man she loved. Slowly, the family started moving forward again.
Now it’s you walking down that aisle
Now it’s you I can’t help but smile
Now it’s you staring back at me
Forever to be
They were about half way now and there were barely any dry eyes in the room. A lot of people saw this moment coming, yet couldn’t have imagined how it would feel to actually experience this moment.
Marinette glanced down the line of groomsmen and bridesmaids. Nino and Alya stood closest to Adrien, being the best man and maid of honor. Down her line were Zoé, Chloé, Juleka, Rose and Kagami. By Adrien’s side stood Max, Kim, Luka, Nathaniel and Félix. Honestly, Félix had been the biggest surprise. Marinette had figured Adrien wanted his cousin there but she didn’t think he would be part of the bridal party. Then again, Félix and Adrien had been trying to makeup ever since his father had been defeated. They even let him keep the peacock miraculous, seeing how happy Duusu was with him as an owner.
Now it’s you I see my whole world
Now it’s you never been more sure
Now it’s you, it’s always been you
According to the kwamis, the Ladybug and Black Cat holders ended up together 90% of the time. Like destiny. Still they always felt like they would be part of that small 10% that wouldn’t. Marinette took her role as the guardian very seriously and felt that trusting Chat Noir with the knowledge of who she was would only put both of them in danger. After defeating Monarch, there was no pressure. No threat of being exposed. It felt as if a weight had been lifted off of their shoulders.
They took a lot of time to heal. They were only teens when they started and most of their teenage years had been spent protecting the people of Paris. They talked a lot. About their feelings, their experiences, nightmares, and dreams. They spent an entire night on Chat Blanc, Marinette letting out all of the stress, grief, and sadness about the situation. That because of that experience she felt she had to protect Chat from himself. That their love had been a catalyst of the destruction of the world they had known. He had listened, only offering her an arm around her shoulder as she cried her heart out. And while it took a while for her to trust in love again, that had been the moment her heart started to heal.
So let the doors just open wide
‘Cause standing there is my whole life
I’ve waited long enough to finally say, “I do”
And let the people on both sides
See you there and all arise
To see us hand in hand
I swear I always knew
They reached the end of the aisle, Tom letting go of his daughter’s arm. He turned to Adrien, and while Adrien held out his hand to shake, Tom dragged him into the biggest hug of his life. Adrien smiled, glancing over his shoulder as he saw Sabine kiss her daughter on the cheek. Tom let go of him, allowing him to breathe normally again. Tom held out his hand, Marinette taking it gently in her.
Tom leaned forward, kissing his little girl on her forehead. Together they turned to Adrien, a tear trailing down his cheek at the beauty before him.
It's always been you
It's always been you, oh
Tom let go of her hand. Adrien held his breath. She reached out for him. He gently took her hand into his, pulling her up next to him.
The preacher started the ceremony, but Adrien only had eyes for the beauty in front of him. She raised her hand gracefully, gently wiping away the tear that stubbornly clung to his cheek. Her smile blinded him.
The ceremony was reaching its end. They turned to each other, Tikki and Plagg giving them their wedding rings before retreating. It wouldn’t be a wedding without the kwamis who brought them together after all.
So let the doors just open wide
‘Cause standing there is my whole life
I’ve waited long enough to finally say…
“I do.”
“I do.”
As Adrien leaned closer to her, ready to seal their marriage, he had one final thing to add. His lips hovered over hers, her sky blue eyes staring into his own forest green.
“It’s always been you.” Before closing the distance.
