Work Text:
“Enid, it seems I have found myself in a dire situation,” Wednesday announced gravely, as she stood behind Enid in their shared room. Enid finalized the last touches on her essay, typing out the last sentence, before turning to look at Wednesday.
The normally pale girl looked even paler and she was clutching her chest with her left hand. Rivulets of red blood had stained and dried on her black and white hoodie. Enid's eyes bulged out.
“Are you hurt?” Enid screeched out, rising to her feet, wringing her wrists. What had happened now?
“That would be one way to describe this,” Wednesday said and lifted her hand to reveal a gaping hole through the fabric and through her chest. Where there should be a heart, there was nothing.
Enid's eyes rolled into the back of her head and she fell to the floor.
When Enid came to, she was on her bed, and Wednesday had slipped into new clothing, noticeably blood free and without the hole. Enid sat up, watching as Wednesday puttered around the room, waiting for Enid. Wednesday saw that Enid was up and approached her, keeping a small distance.
“Wednesday,” Enid said, sitting up slowly. “Did you....did you have a gaping hole in your chest or...” she trailed off weakly as Wednesday nodded her head.
“I'm missing my heart,” Wednesday said nonchalantly and Enid's eyes promptly rolled into the back of her head.
Enid came to a second time, on her bed, head throbbing. This time Wednesday was sat by her side, observing her. “If you keep fainting, we'll never get this done.”
“Get what done?” Enid said weakly.
Wednesday exhaled through her nose. “I...you know I do not like asking for assistance. But it seems in this case, your assistance is required.”
“You want me to get your....” Enid gulped, repulsed at the idea of a squishy red organ not being where it should be, “your heart back?”
“Yes,” said seriously.
Enid swallowed thickly and tried to fight the swaying of her head. She placed a hand to her forehead. “How...how are you even alive?”
Wednesday thinned her lips as she recounted the events that got her to this. “I was perusing the books in the library, as I do, and happened upon a unfortunate book yet again.”
This was starting to sound oddly similar to the time Wednesday had been cursed by Christmas, which hadn't been all too long ago.
“I unleashed Cupid by accident and he stole my heart when I refused to admit-” here she cut herself off. “It doesn't matter how this all came to be. You need to help me get my heart back.”
Wednesday had cut herself off at a suspicious moment.
“Refused to admit what?” Enid asked and Wednesday stared at her with a look that said it was best not to ask.
“Alright, fine,” Enid relented. “How is Cupid even real?” She had thought him to be a symbol used by companies to sell romance.
“Enid, you're a werewolf. If you can exist, so can Cupid.”
“Fair,” Enid conceded. “But what can I do to help you? Can't you shoot him down and get your heart back?”
“It's not that simple. He said he would give my heart back, but that it's conditional.”
“And the condition is?”
Wednesday sighed and gripped her knees. It seemed like this was hard for her to say. “Maybe I should just destroy Valentine's day. It would be less painful and impossible than this.”
“Wednesday!” Enid cried out but her roommate got up and rushed out of the room, going to find Thing to help her with this issue.
Enid shook her head. Ever since they had shared a mistletoe kiss, things had been different between them. Enid was more self conscious of Wednesday even if Wednesday seemed to forget all about the kiss. Had it meant nothing to the dark haired girl? Enid had thought things would change for the better, but they hadn't.
And now Wednesday had gotten wrapped up in more problems. Honestly, what was with Wednesday and picking fights with holidays? Enid just hoped Wednesday would be alright. She had no idea how Wednesday was even walking around, with her heart missing and with a gaping hole-
Enid stopped her train of thought there. Nope, too gory too think about.
…
The following morning, Enid went on her way to class. Wednesday had not been back to the room since last evening and Enid was concerned for her. Was she alright? Had being heartless caught up with her?
Then she saw all the Valentine's day decorations the Arts club had carefully hung up had been mysteriously torn down and Enid knew Wednesday had been busy. It seemed Wednesday was singlehandidly waging a war on the holiday like she had done with Christmas.
Enid sighed. She didn't want this to get out of hand like last time. Wednesday had refused Enid's help. This time, she had come asking for Enid's help before backing out. Progress, in a way. Enid wanted Wednesday to trust her more.
She wanted to show Wednesday she could help her.
Once lunch came, Enid decided to go find this Cupid. It wasn't hard, when the whole school was abuzz about his presence. There was a long line of girls waiting to ask him about their love life and Enid had to wait for her turn, tapping her fingers impatiently against her crossed arms.
Yoko and Divina were there, as was Bianca surprisingly. Enid wondered if this had to do with the break up with Xavier.
By the time Enid got to Cupid, lunch was almost over. He was sat arrogantly in a chair that looked like it should be in a throne room, one leg over the side. He was wearing all white, with a low V neck, and his bow was slung over his back. His golden curls framed his young looking face. “And how can I help you today?” he winked at her.
“Look,” she said, not quite sure how to go about this. “I think you have something belonging to my friend. Something red, and squishy and-”
“Oh, you mean this?” he asked too innocently and pulled out a still beating heart from inside his shirt. Enid passed out.
This time when she came to, she was sat in the library at a table in the back row. Her neck hurt from how she'd been face first on the table. She rubbed the back of her neck and found Cupid sitting in front of her, inspecting his nails.
“Took you a while. You know I'm a busy man.”
Feeling irritable at his attitude, she snapped back, “you could just go back to your book and stay there.”
“And miss out on all this fun? I haven't had entertainment like this in soooooooo long,” he said flippantly.
“Look, can I just have my friend's heart back?” Enid asked. “Or else she's going to go to war with your holiday and it won't end well for you.”
He scoffed. “Yea, right. One teenage girl with angst cannot overcome love.”
“You clearly don't know Wednesday Addams. She would win just out of spite,” Enid said.
“And you do?” he arched a brow. “Listen, if she's not going to use her heart, she doesn't deserve to have it.”
“You can't just decide that!” Enid blustered out. “You can't just-”
He pulled the heart out once again and she face planted into the desk, unconscious.
She woke up a few minutes later and he was gone. She rubbed the hurt bit of flesh on her forehead. What an asshole.
Enid was inclined to help Wednesday destroy Valentine's day. Enid got up and rushed out to find Wednesday. They would need to tackle this Cupid head on, together. Just like they did with Christmas.
Finding Wednesday wasn't too hard. Enid just followed the trail of shot arrows lodged into the walls and floors of the halls, and the bits of missing stone where Wednesday's bombs must have gone off.
The two of them were in the courtyard, Cupid standing on top of the fountain, while Wednesday was below him, brandishing a dagger. They were arguing.
“Give me my heart back!”
“I already said you would get it back when you decided to use it. As you seem so opposed to properly using it...” he shrugged.
“My feelings are none of your business!”
“Au contraire, yes they are! It's my job to help you fulfill the love you feel in your blackened heart.”
“Love?” Enid squealed out, too loudly. She drew both of their attentions to her. Wednesday Addams was in love? Who was she in love with? Xavier? Why did the idea of that hurt so much?
Was it because Enid had thought the kiss between her and Wednesday would finally move them in the direction of a relationship? Enid did like Wednesday, there was no doubt about that. But who had stolen Wednesday's heart (other than Cupid right now) and made her fall in love with them?
“You misheard!” Wednesday said hastily. “Cupid is a filthy liar.”
“Your heart doesn't lie,” Cupid said, his hand on the organ. If Enid had looked at it, she would notice it pulsating harder now that Enid was nearby. She refused to look to prevent passing out yet again.
“Wednesday how can we stop him?” Enid asked.
“She just needs to confess her love to the person she likes and I'll give the heart back,” said, throwing the heart up and down.
“Like hell!” Wednesday snarled out. “Even if I do that, you're still here. I need you back in that accursed book.”
He hummed. “I don't think so. Go back into the book and waste all this ass?” he asked, showing off his body.
Wednesday turned to Enid. “How do you feel about playing fetch?”
“With.....with your heart?” Enid asked faintly.
Wednesday nodded her head.
Enid felt woozy and nauseous. “Um-”
“Fine then!” Cupid shouted out. “I swear, you're so stubborn. You act as if love is the worst thing to ever happen to you.”
“It is,” Wednesday said, through gritted teeth. Cupid fluttered down from his perch and stood in front of Wednesday.
“Well, if this is the way you act, perhaps it would be better to spare Enid's feelings and not tell her.”
Wednesday froze and Enid arched a brow. Huh, what about her?
Wednesday mouth corner twitched. “You just- you said-”
Cupid's eyes went wide and so did his mouth. “Oops- I guess I did.”
“I'm going to kill you-”
Cupid shoved his hand with Wednesday's heart right back into her chest, hard enough that she fell to the ground. She clutched her hand to her chest and gasped as the beating organ fell right into place.
“Wednesday!” Enid rushed over to her side. “Are you okay?” she was afraid to touch her roommate least something happen to her. Wednesday pulled up her shirt, causing Enid to blush furiously.
“It's healed,” Wednesday said, relieved. “Now I can go kick his ass.”
“I gave you your heart back, leave me alone!” he hollered out. Wednesday grabbed her knife where it had fallen to the floor and raced after Cupid who screamed “I'm too pretty!”
Enid watched them go. She felt despondent. Wednesday had someone she was in love with. Enid wished she could tear her own heart out of her chest, because it hurt to know it wasn't Enid even after the kiss they had shared.
She dragged herself to her room and plopped down into the fabric of the blanket. She stayed there for a while until a bedraggled Wednesday came back into the dorm room. She spat out a mouthful of paper hearts.
“It's been done. Cupid is confined in his book once more.” She high fived Thing who stood on her shoulder.
“Good,” Enid said, sitting up and affecting what she thought was a normal smile. Wednesday paused, eyes scrutinizing Enid.
“Are you upset about something?”
Enid both hated and liked that Wednesday had become more tuned to Enid's feelings. It meant it was easier to talk about them; however, sometimes like today she didn't necessarily want to bring them up because she didn't want to talk about her crush on Wednesday with Wednesday.
“No, it's nothing. I was just worried about you, and Cupid. You wanted my help but it seems you were able to take care of him yourself.”
“He talked a big game but it was a lot easier to get rid of him then Christmas. At least he was one individual-” Wednesday cut herself off her as she began to cough. She coughed and coughed until more paper hearts came up.
She frowned at them in her hand, at the tiny pink and red shapes. This was most odd. She shouldn't be coughing these things up.
“Are you alright?” Enid asked and suddenly Wednesday swayed. Enid caught her in time and slowly lowered Wednesday to the floor. “Wednesday?”
Thing did a frantic tap dance on Wednesday's shoulder and Enid gently turned Wednesday around to see that there was half an arrow stuck out of Wednesday's shoulder blade.
“You got hit,” Enid reported with dread.
“Oh,” Wednesday said, her cheeks flushed a bright red. She shoved herself away from Enid who was stung by the harsh reaction. Wednesday hurried over to a dresser mirror and examined the arrow. “He must have got me and I didn't even feel it. This is no good.” Her voice trembled a bit. She had an inkling of an idea of what getting hit with his arrow would entail.
“Does it hurt?”
Thing reached around and yanked the arrow out for Wednesday. There was no blood or wound left from it. “No, the arrows don't hurt or cause damage. They however, cause something worse.”
“What?”
“Feelings.”
Wednesday placed a hand over her heart. It was racing madly and she couldn't stop blushing. She refused to look back at Enid. If she did, she might be inclined to do something stupid.
“Like romance? Like making someone in love?” Enid asked, noticing with dismay the distance Wednesday kept between them. “But aren't you already in love?”
“I'm not in love!” Wednesday cried out and whirled around only to gasp in shock and whirl back around as quickly as she could. Her heart raced even faster. Damn it, she was seeing roses and floating hearts around Enid when she looked at her. “We need to find the antidote to Cupid's arrow. Otherwise I'll be stuck like this for a while.”
“Can we ask him?”
“And release him from the book again?”
“It might be our only shot at fixing this,” Enid said.
Wednesday grumbled. “I just put him back there.” Another coughing fit interrupted her. More paper hearts came fluttering out. Thing snapped his fingers at her. He was rightfully worried about the paper hearts. Wednesday could already feel them clogging her throat, trying to choke her up.
Enid and Wednesday headed towards the library and secured the book.
“We'll need to set up an inescapable circle for him, that way when he pops out of the book, he won't be able to leave anyways,” Wednesday said. “Enid, I need you to get some ingredients for me. Can you do that?”
“Yes, you can rely on me,” Enid said, giving Wednesday a bright smile. Wednesday refused to look at her and her cheeks were flushed the entire time. Did she not feel well?
Enid set off at a brisk pace to get what they needed. As she did, she bumped into Divina.
“Why the rush? Got a hot date tonight?” Divina asked.
“The opposite actually,” Enid replied.
“Really? You love Valentine's day. I thought you'd have a whole date planned out and everything.”
Enid had wanted to go on a date; had contemplated asking Wednesday to go on one with her even if only friends. But the chance had never come up because Enid was a coward and now because of all this.
Enid offered Divina a shrug and rushed off to get the supplies. When she came back, Wednesday had drawn circles onto the floor of their room and lit candles. She took the items Enid gave her, being extremely careful to avoid Enid's eyes and to avoid touching fingers as they traded the bag.
Enid felt horrible about that. Was the arrow making Wednesday do all this? Was she repulsed by Enid because her feelings had been magnified for whoever she had had a crush on?
The book cracked open and Wednesday laid it out in the middle of the room. She chanted a few words and Cupid's head and shoulders popped out of the book. He grinned at her.
“Missed me already?”
“You shot me with your arrow.”
“That I did.”
“How do I get rid of the effects?”
“Come now, Wednesday. Don't be silly. You know what would get rid of the effects.”
“Play coy and I will burn the entire book,” she promised, taking out her lighter and passing the flame close to the pages.
“No need for hasty actions!” he cried out and she withdrew the lighter. “You just need to go on a date. The effects of my arrows should alleviate by then; they're meant to facilitate romance.”
“A date,” Wednesday said dryly.
“Yes, with someone you like.”
“I. Don't. Like. Anyone,” she said.
“If you refuse....well, let's say those paper hearts you're coughing up aren't just for decoration.”
“And is there no other way around this?”
“Come now, a date is harmless. Just a bit of fun.” He waggled his brows.
Irritably, she slapped the top of his head and began to shove him back into the book. “Useless,” she grumbled out as he protested her actions. With one big heave, Thing helping her, Cupid was shoved right back into the book.
Wednesday gave a heavy sigh, resigned to her fate. Wednesday refused to look at Enid, but the tips of her ears were bright red. “Enid....Enid will you do me the honor of going on a date with me?”
Enid was so shocked she became choked up.
“I knew it-” Wednesday began, rising to her feet to rush out to save face, but Enid stopped her, grabbing her by the wrist.
“Yes. Let's go on a date!” she was all smiles and bright teeth and Wednesday was hit full force by it. It made her feel dizzy and the roses around Enid's head that she saw floating only grew more in size and bloomed.
Wednesday's chest swelled with warmth and she felt dizzy. “I think I'm going to be sick,” Wednesday muttered to no in particular as her stomach swooped.
…
Two hours later found them both dressed up and waiting to head out for the date. It had taken Wednesday about twenty minutes to get ready. She had pulled on a simple but elegant four piece suit, all in black and left her hair the same way, adding a touch of black lipstick to her mouth.
Enid had been unable to settle on an outfit and had dumped the contents of her entire closet onto the bed as she frantically tried on everything. She had finally settled onto a pink dress with short sleeves and a fur coat that went over it.
Then she had curled her hair and pinned it up and done up her make up. Finally, she was done.
“Ready,” she announced, doing a little bounce as she got closer to Wednesday. Wednesday looked her up and down and the constant blush on her face only deepened.
“What do we do now?” Wednesday asked. Enid laughed.
“You asked me on the date. You should have something planned.”
“I've never done a date before. I have no idea what to do.”
“I'll take the lead then,” Enid said.
Options for dates were pretty limited in Jericho but Enid called them a cab from the academy and sent them to the local town. She dragged them along to the movies, a ball of excitement sitting in her stomach. She had never imagined she'd actually get to go on a date with Wednesday. But she was!
“Two tickets,” she said, buying them for the scariest movie she could find. There weren't many options since most movies were romance ones. They got into the theater and sat down, the lights dimmed and Enid offered Wednesday some of the concessions snacks. Wednesday refused them, stating she didn't eat such things.
As the movie rolled, Enid could tell this wasn't what Wednesday would normally watch, but all Enid could think about was wanting to hold Wednesday's hand in the dark. Surely, they could do that, right? It was all for the sake of breaking the arrow's hold on Wednesday.
Surreptitiously, Enid allowed her hand to brush over Wednesday's, emboldened by being able to use the arrow as an excuse to act this way. “We should hold hands. To make sure the date works and the curse is lifted,” she whispered.
Wednesday nodded her head and allowed Enid to twine their fingers together. Enid felt instant euphoria at the touch and was all smiles even if no one could see them in the dark. Meanwhile, Wednesday was overcome with embarrassment and happiness that she was holding hands with Enid. She opted to cover her eyes in shame and Enid mistook it as Wednesday being scared of the romance movie they were watching.
They left the theater, still hand in hand, and Enid directed them towards a restaurant. “We should eat. It's also part of a date.”
They sat and ordered food to eat, Enid even going so far as to fed Wednesday small bites of her meal. This embarrassed Wednesday more, but she went along with it, because this was a date and she needed to get rid of the arrows effects. And maybe, despite this all, she did enjoy the one on one attention Enid was giving her.
“Enid? Wednesday?” a voice said in shock. Bianca and Xavier came up to them. Of course they would be out on a date right now. Everyone who was a couple was out today and the two of them were probably trying to reconcile. Enid shrunk in her seat while Wednesday glared at them. Enid had been hoping to avoid bumping into anyone they knew.
“Neither of you could get a date so you had to go out together?” she sneered.
Wednesday grabbed Enid's hand and twined their fingers together. “Actually, we're on a date together.”
Bianca began to laugh at this while Xavier looked saddened by this information.
“Yea right! As if Wednesday would ever date anyone. If she won't go after Xavier and he's the sweetest and most popular guy, what says she'll go after Enid?”
“I say,” Wednesday said, rising up from her seat. She glared daggers at Bianca, daring her to say more.
“Enid, tell your guard dog to chill,” Bianca said but Xavier placed a hand on her shoulder.
“Let's go. If we don't hurry up we'll miss our booking,” he said, casting the couple an apologetic look.
They walked away and Wednesday sat back down. Enid and Wednesday tried to focus back on enjoying their date, chatting about this and that. At around 8pm they got back to their dorm room, shutting the door softly behind them. Wednesday looked troubled even if the date had otherwise gone well.
“The effects of the arrow are still here. I can feel the spot I was hit burning with the effects of the spell,” Wednesday admitted. “It seems our date didn't work.”
“Would it....could it be....perhaps we have to kiss?” Enid asked in a small voice, hesitant to voice this even if she desperately wanted to kiss Wednesday again.
“Kiss?”
“Kissing happens on dates,” Enid said, cheeks burning red. “Maybe we need that to finalize our date and the spell will go away?”
Wednesday nodded her head. “Okay.” She stepped forward and without much warning connected her lips to Enid's. Enid was so shocked she didn't kiss back and Wednesday pulled away with a hum of disapproval.
“You're supposed to kiss back.”
“You caught me off guard!” Enid yelped before cupping Wednesday's cheeks in her hands. “I am so much a better kisser than that. We've already kissed before.”
“You'll have to refresh my memory,” Wednesday teased and Enid gladly did. They kissed slow and tender, almost feather light touches. Enid's eyes slipped closed and so did Wednesday's. When they pulled back Wednesday frowned.
“The spell is still there.”
“Should we....should we kiss some more?” Enid suggested and Wednesday nodded her head. Their lips joined together once, then twice, then trice more. Each time the kisses becoming harder and deeper until somehow they stumbled onto the bed.
Enid landed flat on her back on the pillows while Wednesday hovered over her, their mouths working in unison, heads slanting to the side. Enid was burning up, both from the heat radiating from Wednesday's body and from the way her own body heated up.
Eventually, they had to pull apart for air, both of them panting with the adrenaline of the kiss.
“Did it work?” Enid asked breathlessly, hands wrapped around Wednesday's shoulders. Her dark eyes were focused on Enid's lips but they flicked up when Enid spoke.
“I don't think it worked,” Wednesday said and reluctantly untangled herself from Enid. Enid already missed the feel of Wednesday on her and wished they could go back and kiss some more. Wednesday paced the room, using this time to try and calm down a bit and focus on what the next move should be.
Enid watched her pacing, knowing this was the end of their 'date to save Wednesday' and that tomorrow they would have to go back to being roommates again even if Enid didn't want them to. Still, she spoke up, knowing she would have these memories to relish even if Wednesday was not hers.
“I had a great time, today,” Enid said, fiddling with her fingers. “Why didn't you go with your crush?”
“My crush?” Wednesday stopped in her brainstorming and pacing to look with confusion at Enid.
“The person you actually like. I bet they'd love to hang out with you too, and maybe you would have had more fun with them.”
Wednesday exhaled heavily, as if this was all burdensome. “I enjoyed my date with you, Enid. There is no 'other crush'.”
Enid tipped her head to the side.
Wednesday looked like she would rather stab herself than admit this, but it had to be done. The effects of the arrow still lingered. “The person Cupid thinks I like is you.”
Enid's eyes went so wide it was comical. “You like me?”
“I think I do,” Wednesday admitted. “I'm not familiar with such feelings such as liking someone. Maybe I am mistaken. But I do enjoy spending time with you and I think about what you're doing or how your day is going. I want to show you new things and share my interests with you, and I can't wait to see your face when I come back to the room.”
Enid squealed and held out her hands, urging Wednesday to join the embrace. Wednesday did. Enid hugged Wednesday tightly. “I like you too,” she said, breathing into Wednesday's ear. “And it's okay if you're not sure of your feelings. We can navigate those together.”
Wednesday nuzzled deeper into the hug.
There was a sudden pop and Wednesday felt the spell leave her, two white doves fluttering out of thin air around them up and out the window.
“I guess the spell's gone?” Enid asked, looking at Wednesday as they pulled out of the hug. “Now what?”
“Now I have a sudden hankering for chocolate,” Wednesday said with a scowl.
“If we wait tomorrow, we can get all the unsold Valentine's day chocolates for a discount. Or, we can go steal some from Bianca and Xavier as revenge for them being rude to us earlier.”
“Devious.” Wednesday gave a faint smile to Enid. “Let's do it.”
And they raced off to ruin Valentine's day for one unsuspecting couple.
