“There you are.” Kara looked up sharply as she heard the voice that had spoken. Were her ears playing tricks on her or was really who she thought standing behind her? In this establishment?
“Mrs. Grant? What are you doing here?” Here meant Al’s bar that usually never was visited by people of Cat Grants standing. The woman had only been here once when it had been the point of resistance against Queen Rhea.
“I wanted to check how you were doing. I heard some alarming things and wanted to make sure that you are alright in person.” Explained the Queen of all media and sat down on the barstool next to the young superheroine before ordering a glass of whiskey.
“From whom and about what?” wanted Kara a further explanation before replying to what Cat said. It was always at least a small game of hide and seek with her hidden identity. Even if she was pretty sure that Cat knew about her being Supergirl.
“Who isn’t important. The what I can answer. Something about an ice castle and a green gem.” Kept the older woman her explanation rather vague because she didn’t know if untrustworthy ears were listening around them. This bar was too shady for speaking openly about a topic like this if you asked her.
“I don’t know what you’re talking about.” Denied the blonde with a slight shake of her head before she took a sip of the beverage before her. She’d come here to drink a glass or two of Zakarian Ale and this was her first glass. Her state of drunkenness wasn’t enough for this conversation if Cat would nag her any further about this. Long gone was the time where one glass was enough to get her drunk out of her mind.
“Yes, you do. Quit pretending that we both don’t know what this is about for the best of both of us. We’re no longer in the situation we were in when you were my assistant and I your boss.” Shot Cat down the reason Kara was hiding her secret identity from her. She had accepted it back than because it was necessary for their situation. If Kara hadn’t found a way to show herself and Supergirl at the same time the code of a journalist would have pushed the Queen of all media to go public with the knowledge. Even if she didn’t want to.
“Why now, Cat?”
“Because we’re both free to do as we please without any obligations to any media platform.”
“I’m still an employee of CatCo Worldwide Media.”
“Yes, but I’m not bound to any code of honor to publish the truth about your secret identity while not actively being CEO of CatCo.” Replied Cat and nodded towards the younger one’s drink. “What is it you’re drinking?”
“Nothing you should try. It’s one of the few drinks that can get me drunk.” Replied Kara without commenting the Supergirl part of the conversation any further.
“You should believe her.” Piped up Al who had heard the question. “Zakarian Ale is not for everyone, lady.” He grinned while saying that and went over to get the drink for another customer.
“Did he just…”
“Call you a lady? Yes, he did.” Kara grinned and took another sip of her Ale.
“Why exactly did you choose this establishment? In itself it is shady and the barkeeper is unprofessional.” This caused Kara to laugh.
“Really Cat? It is one of the few environments where I can behave like myself or at least don’t have to hide for example my strength. It’s not uncommon here or something that gets an eyebrow raise. Al is a really nice guy without him this wouldn’t be the same.”
“If you say so.” Cat sounded unconvinced. It still wasn’t an explanation why this was so shady. She would just have to deal with it if she wanted to talk with Kara and maybe drink something.
“Al would you please give Cat a ahiskey? Top shelf.”
“Sure thing, Kara.” Acknowledged Al and went straight to pick out the best whiskey he had.
„Lena Luthor is someone needed to be handled carefully, Kara. Her upbringing made her unpredictable and the resources she has make her dangerous. Which you had to find out for yourself sadly.” Cat looked towards her former assistant with a sad smile and gave a barely there nod in Al’s direction as he slid a glass with the amber liquid her way. “I met people like her a few times. Being a friend means always keeping one eye open because there always can be a moment where you’re stabbed into your back.”
Kara kept silent for a while to sort her thoughts and to think about what her old boss said. “It will never be the same between Lena and me. That’s for sure. I wanted so badly to be a friend for her that I was willing to overlook and do things that I would normally never do.”
“She was always quick to get people to do what she wants and quick to judge them if they betrayed her from her point of view. Old friends and acquaintances know plenty about it.” The older blonde explained and took a sip of her whiskey. “It doesn’t matter why because she just explodes in the face of said friends and leaves right after. It usually comes with her stopping all contact with the person and the friend group that’s part of it. It’s neither right nor healthy but…”
