“I want… to break up with you.”
Spindrax watches as the Dragon girl’s excited face turns to surprise. The sparkles of joy in her eyes fade away and the shine in her eyes now only belongs to the lights of the town reflecting on them. She feels her heart sink. She feels as if she just forcefully took a star and forced it down onto the earth and watch its light die in the process. It looks like the ferris wheel they are on has stopped moving or better yet: It crumbled apart just like Mei’s heart did in that very moment.
Spindrax swallows. She knows what she’s doing to her right now. She really doesn’t want to put her through this. But she doesn’t want them to suffer through the decisions she makes together. Even if it makes it bearable, even if it makes her feel less lonely she…she just can’t do this to her.
“... Did I do something wrong?”, Mei asks, slightly leaning to the direction of her… Girlfriend? Ex? What is becoming of them right now? “No, No you didn’t. Throughout this entire time, you’ve been amazing for me and you made sure to remind me I’m amazing for you too but…”, Spindrax gives a loud sigh, looking for a reasonable cover up. She wanted to work full time for the spider queen. She’s been working under her for quite some time and she has heard that Mei accidentally got caught in her web once. Not only that, just recently she got some Kid’s hair that contains some powers that seem fit enough for her venom to be produced… She wants to help as best as she can. And she doesn’t want to involve Mei any further. She feels like its her fault she got involved in the first place. Mei doesn’t know about this, either… So she thinks it’s for the best.
“... I want to focus on something else right now. It will make things very difficult for us. So-”, “NO!”, she’s a bit caught off guard by the loud shout of hers and cut off by her hands as they are shoved over her lips. She looks her in the eyes. Her heart breaks a little as she sees her lips lightly quiver and her teeth clench in nervosity and most importantly… The glossy eyes, signalizing an upcoming round of sobbing from her. An obvious sign of a heartbreak. And she can’t take it back. “Please… We can work through this! I- I can uhm… Text you more? I can bring you snacks, I can give you rides to your work place! Or maybe it’s not that, maybe you need a little bit of space? Pshh I can do that too! We’ve been calling for like- once a week? I can make do with once a month or once every season or… or…”, Mei slowly goes quiet as her eyes stop darting around and she stops looking for solutions as she realizes that her precious racer girlfriend had long tried and given up on bargaining, telling by the sad frown on her face. And when she out of all people has given up on that…
“We… We could…”, she tries hard to keep on pushing that maybe, just maybe she will awake a little spark of hope. But deep down she knows. She can’t. Not with her sitting there with hopeless eyes. Not when she looks at her like she had cried enough about this in her own dark room for her to not cry about it anymore. She starts sobbing, hot tears leaving her eye sockets and she bites down on her lips, trying to keep it in. Spindrax can only watch as she watches her ‘little fang’ crumble. After a while, she reaches for her face, stroking it gently.
A quick look on eachothers faces.
And then Mei’s face disappears into the shoulder of Spindrax’s. The sobs start out quiet. And very light. But soon, it grows louder and louder and more intense. Spindrax closes her eyes, stroking her back and feels her own eyes grow all glossy, but no tears leak out unlike with Mei.
And here they were. At the ferris wheel. Where they had confessed their love years ago and now where they also broke up at. It hits her now as well that Mei probably awaited a Marriage proposal and not a break up. A part of her, in her opinion the stupidest, most foolish part of her, wants to turn back and tell her she will come back. That maybe, they can wait it out until things aren’t as busy but… she can’t.
“Exit please and-”, the worker says, opening the door from the ferris wheel and watches with light wonder as he notices the swollen eyes of Mei and the obvious wet stain on the shoulder of Spindrax’s blouse. He puts two and two together and watches the now-ex-girlfriends leave, trotting next to each other, Mei clutching her arm and Spindrax rubbing her neck.
The two walk up to the Train station. During all this time, They’ve been quiet and did not dare break the silence that filled between them. Things are already dreading as they are. And both of them can’t handle for things to get worse by some accident or false word. Before Spindrax knows it, Mei’s train arrived. She steps in, turns around and looks at her.
Ah… And this is where they have to face this silly little fear of theirs.
“... Goodbye.”, “Have a nice night.”, Spindrax mouths and the Door closes and she watches as it disappears into the tunnel.
“... Great job, Spinny.”, she mutters to herself, takes a deep breath and turns around.
Now… time for work.
“You… are you okay?”, “Hm?”, Spindrax looks to the right, being met with her technician partner, Syntax. They both went out for a smoke. She was the one that found him here, on the rooftop of a tall building. They used to eat their lunch together there and talk about big plans after their studies.
“You’re crying. I don’t get to see you in that state often. What’s on your mind?”, he asks, blowing a cloud of smoke onto her face. “Nothing… just my Ex. And our breakup.”, she says. “Hm… I’m trying to remember…”, “You don’t need to. Point is I came home sad and you tried to comfort me. I can’t blame you if you don’t remember. The Venom makes it hard to remember things. Especially events before we were involved with our queen - or anything that isn’t about the Queen in general.”, “Yes, well that is because she deserves to be remembered. That’s what matters the most.”, he says.
“... What if I had stayed over at hers? Or agreed on a last date with her at the new years. I mean- it was just a few days away. Practically tomorrow.”, “That would’ve caused you a lot of trouble. And you would’ve been enslaved just like the other humans in the town. You should be grateful you get to work for her now. You made the right decision.”, he says, scoffing and tapping his cigar at the edge of the building. “Yeah… I know… It’s for the best.”, she sighs.
“Besides, no use crying over spoiled milk. You’ll never have her again. Not anymore. In the past? Maybe. Now? No chance.”, he cackles lightly and looks at her. Not a change of expression. “... You’re not gonna wipe your face?”, “I won’t bother.”, “You’re acting immature… and here I thought you were the eldest of us.”, “I am. That’s why I’m not obsessed over her like some little kid.”, she can practically feel the glare Syntax shoots her after. “She could kill you any time, yknow?”, “Yeah. But we all die some day.”, she says and glares back at him. “... I lost someone that day. And I got nothing good out of it.”, “Tch”, “... But I can only blame myself… Besides…”, she gives a weak smile as she looks at the big screen showcasing Mei having won the grand prize a few months back. “... If what I did doesn’t hold her smile back… I guess I’ll make do.”
She puts out her own cigar. “Maybe I’ll race her again one day.”, “Again?”, “We met during a race. Been stuck to me ever since until I forced a seperation between the two of us. This body is the proof of the End and beginning of a life of mine.”
The two spider goons walk down the stairs of the building.
The stars shone brightly that night. And a small spark had showed up in Spindrax.
And a new beginning starts.
