Work Text:
“You promised me dinner after the mission.”
Genji looked up alarmed, Angela had appeared at the training room entrance. While her message came across slightly reprimanding, the small smile on her face indicated that there was humour behind it.
“Forgive me Angela, I-“
He found himself trailing off in attempt to find a suitable explanation. Truthfully, he had dismissed her mid mission comment as merely a jest. He found it difficult to believe anyone would seek his company, Angela was simply nice to everyone and he was no exception. While he was not a patient in her care any longer, she probably felt some sort of responsibility to check up on him. Her actions were just that, nothing more than a kind professional courtesy.
Genji’s train of thought was interrupted by the sound of Angela scoffing. He glanced back at her to see her shake her head, laughing softly.
“Don’t overthink it Genji, there was never any obligation to dinner, I only wished to check up on you. You didn’t stop by the infirmary after the mission.”
Genji bowed his head apologetically, “I am fine Angela, I saw no point in disturbing you.”
He did not notice how her eyebrows pinched or how her smile dropped slightly.
“You are never a disturbance Genji, I must say I enjoy your company. There are not many people who listen to my late night ramblings or,” she paused to audibly laugh, “who can withstand my coffee.”
Genji cracked a smile at this comment. It was not visible from beneath his faceplate but Angela always seemed to have had a good read on him.
“And stop apologising so much Genji, we are friends and if you truly want to be forgiven,” she almost smirked at him, “well, perhaps we could have dinner one day?”
Genji unfastened his faceplate and turned towards her, Angela had seen it all anyway, and he did not miss how her face brightened in response to this gesture.
“… I promise Angela.”
They stood there for a moment, facing each other silently in the grand training room. The vast empty space insignificant when he was completely tuned to the presence of this one person. If only she knew how enraptured this man was by her existence.
Inevitably, a voice appeared through an overhead speaker. Athena was calling Angela back to her station.
“Don’t work yourself too hard,” Angela remarked as she turned to leave the room.
“Wait Ang-“
“Genji, I-“
The clash of their voices was met with an abrupt silence before it was broken by soft laughter.
“Yes Genji?”
“I, uh, thank you. For coming by.”
Angela rolled her eyes gently, “I hope you’ll return the favour, I’ll be in my office later.”
A genuine appreciative smile crosses his marred face, “Until later, Doctor.”
