Spring

Summary:

While spring is in full bloom, Yoongi is still stuck in winter.

Notes:

English is not my first language so I apologize for any spelling or grammatical errors. This is the first story I have written in over a year and it was written at 2 am, so I apologize if it sucks. This has also been posted on my AFF account.

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

It was a warm April day in 2015, the flowers were blooming, birds were chirping, and after a very long, cold winter, the sun had risen for full and spring had come to Seoul.

Sitting alone in a coffee shop at 11 am was not how Yoongi had imagined spending his Saturday morning. He knew, and anyone who’d ever met him knew, that he’d much rather be in his bed sleeping, but thanks to his stupid roommate Hoseok, who had thrown him out of their shared apartment because he was having friends over, he didn’t have a choice. Okay, so he hadn’t thrown Yoongi out, it was in fact Yoongi who decided to flee as soon as their friends turned up, with the excuse that he had a paper he needed to finish. So maybe it wasn’t his roommate, Hoseok, who was stupid, but him. It was Yoongi who was stupid, he had been the one to flee the apartment, not because Hoseok threw him out, but because he couldn’t stand seeing two of his friends, or maybe they were only Hoseoks’ friends now, being all lovey dovey on the couch as the group was watching a bad English comedy that one of them had picked out on Netflix. They always did that, even when it was obvious that no one ever paid attention to the movie they decided to watch.

Yoongi knew he was being stupid; he was avoiding all of his four friends as much as he could because of that couple, or the “NamKook couple” as their schoolmates liked to call them. Namjoon and Jungkook, his ex best friend and ex boyfriend, who had been dating for more than a year now. It had been over a year since the two of them had started dating and Yoongi was still not over it, and that was quite pathetic, at least if you were listening to his other friend Jin that is.

He had met Jungkook a spring day 2013, and just small buds turned into breath-taking flowers, their friendship had turned into love. But again, just like the flowers, their love had withered by mid-autumn and there had been no traces of them by the time winter came around. The only place you could find any traces of them were in Yoongis’ heart, he couldn’t seem to get rid of them, 2 years after they got together, the traces were still carved into Yoongis’ heart as a winter that seemed like it would last forever. Jungkook, on the other hand, seemed to have no problem whatsoever to get rid of the traces and embrace spring once again. Only two months after they broke things of, on a cold day, early December, Jungkook and his childhood best friend Namjoon, had come out to the whole school as a couple. Everyone had been happy for them and deemed them as a match made in heaven.

Yoongi let out a small, sarcastic chuckle at the memories as he drank the last sip of his coffee, which suddenly tasted too bitter. Realising the fact that it might would have been better to just stay at home and feel miserable with his friends around him than feeling miserable alone at a coffee shop; he started to pack up his belongings. The paper he should have written was still not written and he started to wonder if the NamKook couple would ever wither by mid-autumn like Jungkook and himself had, or if they would be able to pull through every winter together since they had somehow managed to bloom together that winter. Before he had the time to start dwelling on those thoughts, as he grabbed his bag and stood up to leave, he was met with warm, brown liquid staining his favourite white t-shirt.

“I'm so sorry, I’m such an idiot, I’m really sorry. My friend Taehyung, keeps telling me that I need to be careful because I’m so clumsy, which is really weird coming from him since he is the weird one between the two of us and-“ Yoongi couldn’t help the small smile that grazed his lips as the boy with the pretty eyes, puffy cheeks and plump lips in front of him kept rambling.
“It’s okay,” he could hear his own voice say, and for the first in over a year the smile on his lips wasn’t fake and things actually felt like they were going to be okay, despite the hot coffee staining his favourite white t-shirt.

And when the boy gave him a wide smile with his eyes crinkling and cheeks that looked like they would explode; that spring day in April, just like the flowers and the cherry blossom in the streets, spring bloomed once again in Yoongis’ chest, and the winter that seemed like it was going last forever, melted away.
