Pete was getting better at being more aware of the influence he had on Vegas - for the most part. He understood on an abstract level that Vegas would kill for him, but Vegas would kill someone for stepping on his shoelace if he was having a bad enough day. That did not mean that it wasn’t a surprise sometimes.
He and Vegas were having dinner out. A high class restaurant with beautiful food, wine and views. It was nice to have a bit of time to themselves, and Pete always basked in the care Vegas showed him. His lover was a romantic deep down but no one else knew. That was fine, Pete was glad to be the only one who got to see that side of Vegas.
“Fucking faggots.” Pete flinched, utterly bewildered at the derogatory words thrown their way. It was startling - he spent so much time around queer people that he had sort of grown unused to homophobia. He turned to Vegas with wide eyes and saw his boyfriend looking intensely at his reaction. Whatever Vegas saw on Pete’s face made him snap his fingers - men swooped in and took the drunk away smoothly.
“He’ll be taken care of. Don’t let him turn you off your meal.” Vegas said smoothly. Pete looked over his shoulder at the man being dragged away and then back at Vegas.
“Because he insulted us?” Pete knew Vegas had endured far worse insults than that.
“Because he bothered you.” Vegas shrugged, as if it were just that simple.
Apparently for him it was.
The incident stayed in the back of Pete’s mind as they ate dinner and later when he was laying in bed he thought back on it again. Vegas saw that Pete was bothered without him saying a word. Based on that, and that alone, Vegas killed a man. Pete should not be as flattered by that as he was.
Something about it made Pete wonder just how far Vegas would go for him.
Pete had dated men before Vegas, but they were immature relationships that ended before he became a guard for the family. His last boyfriend was, to put it bluntly, a brute. He had slapped Pete around a bit, called him derogatory names and preferred painful sex. It was never satisfying, or followed up by care, not like the sex he had with Vegas.
It was by pure accident that Pete was scrolling through Instagram - Vegas allowed him his own phone - and came across said ex. He was in a group of people that Pete recognised from University and had his arm possessively around a smaller man. Someone who looked young and cheerful. A few taps later Pete found that man’s feed - his name was Bas - and confirmed that he was indeed dating Luke.
People can change. They can change. Pete tried to tell himself, but then another darker part of him thought, but does he even deserve the chance to change? Ironic given the chances Pete had given Vegas.
Maybe this was a chance to test the waters with his lover.
“Do you have any exes?” Pete asked abruptly one night as Vegas was spooning him under their black silk sheets.
“None that were more than a casual partner. Never wanted to be in a relationship before.” Vegas promptly answered. Pete relished in the ease in which Vegas told him the truth nowadays. “How about you?” The arms around Pete’s stomach tightened possessively and he grinned.
“I had one ‘serious’ boyfriend in University. Was in love, the whole shebang.” Pete said, releasing a soft hiss when those arms tightened further. Vegas immediately loosened his hold at the sound. “Don’t worry, there is nothing to be jealous of. He was awful.”
“I’m not jealous.” Vegas said immediately. “What do you mean by awful?”
This was it. The moment when a better man would pull back. Pete actually considered it for a second before he remembered the innocent face he had seen in the photo. “He used to blame me for him being gay and would push me around, hit me some.” Pete spoke truthfully. “Never really cared if I liked the sex, sort of liked when I didn’t. Nothing like you and I. He was just mean.”
“I see.” Vegas’ voice had taken on the tone he used when he tried to pretend he was calm. Pete knew he was furious.
“We all have our crappy relationships though, no need to dwell on it now.” Pete said cheerfully, pulling Vegas’ arms tighter around his torso and allowing himself to drift off to sleep with a small smile on his face.
Pete waited a week before contacting Arm and asking his old colleague to look into his ex. He was unsurprised when Arm reported back that the man went missing five days earlier, an open missing persons case underway.
Pete was fairly confident he would not be found.
Vegas gave one last bone shaking thrust before he came inside Pete with a vicious groan, his hips stuttering as he rode out the aftershocks of his orgasm. Pete could only gasp, utterly spent after their intense session. He lay helpless under Vegas’ weight, arms pulled tight behind his back and tied securely with one of Vegas’ silk ties.
“You were amazing.” Vegas murmured huskily into Pete’s ears and Pete let out a needy little whine at the praise. Vegas finally got up but Pete whimpered at the loss of the body weight. The tie was removed swiftly and Vegas took time to massage Pete’s arms and encourage the blood flow once more.
Vegas pressed a kiss between Pete’s shoulder blades. “I am going to the bathroom, I will be back straight away.” Pete nodded, Vegas could tell his mind was fuzzy and floaty in that way he sometimes got after sex.
Pete huffed a bit when Vegas came back and wiped him down with a warm damp cloth. He winced as his sensitive rim was cleaned and Vegas murmured gentle encouragement as he diligently worked.
Once Vegas deemed him sufficiently clean he took a small pot of ointment and dabbed it into the red handprints he had left on Pete’s buttocks. Pete just sunk into the bed and let himself enjoy the gentle care and ministrations.
Vegas thought he had never looked as pretty as he did then, boneless and sated from pleasure. All his.
“Do you need a bath?” Vegas asked softly, not raising his voice high enough to disturb the weird sense of peace that had imbued the room. He had long since learned that Pete did not react well to loud noises after a session.
“No. Just want to cuddle.” Pete mumbled with a croaky voice. Vegas frowned at the sound and grabbed a bottle of water which he held to Pete’s mouth, the latter greedily drinking.
Satisfied that he was properly hydrated, Vegas finally got onto the mattress and pulled Pete onto his chest. Both he and Pete were completely naked and the mob boss let himself enjoy the simple closeness of skin to skin contact.
“Was that ok?” Vegas asked tentatively.
“It was perfect.” Pete smiled. Vegas let out a sigh of relief. When Pete first came back to him, Vegas had been so hesitant when it came to sex. It look a long time, and plenty of trust on both sides, for him to be comfortable doing anything more than vanilla. Even then Vegas insisted on the most thorough aftercare Pete had ever experienced, but he loved every moment of it.
“I love you.” Pete said, pulling Vegas down into a wet kiss. Their tongues intertwined messily but there was no push for more.
“I love you too.” Vegas breathed when they pulled apart. “Thank you for being mine.”
“And thank you for keeping me safe. For protecting me.” Pete said with a smile.
Vegas was surprised at the statement. “Of course, I always will.” If only you knew what I would do for you. Vegas thought as he looked at the bright and cheerful face of his lover. A brightness that Vegas had once tried to extinguish but would now work hard to keep lit. Vegas thought about that scumbag that he still had locked away in the depths of his compound.
It was for the best that Pete did not know just how far Vegas would go for him.
