Just Like Your Mother

Summary:

A new trauma brings up old memories Moiraine would rather stay buried.

Something I wrote for my elven dhampir paladin after they got their arm ripped off by a pissed off dragon after they had ripped the arm off of said dragons daughter. Eye for an eye and all that. Also for some context for the end, Moiraine's hair turns more and more white the more their vampirism grows, typically through traumatic events causing their self control to slip more and more.

Work Text:

Old, hazy memories slowly claw their out of the hole they had been buried in, old memories Moiraine rarely allows themself to think about. After all, what's the point of thinking of people long gone? But here they are, aware on some level that they had lost consciousness due to... As a child Raine was always told how much like their mum they were.

"Such pretty green eyes, just like your mum!"

"Your hair is so soft and thick, just like your mum!"

Always like their mum, never their mother. And if one only goes by appearance they were mostly correct. Raine has Raeth's thick, black hair, emerald eyes, and fair skin a far cry from Lanfear's pale, borderline silver, blonde hair, icy blue eyes, and tanned skin. The only thing child and mother seemed to share was their towering height. So physically Raine looked much more like her mum than her mother, but that's where most similarities stopped with Raeth and began with Lanfear. Raeth was kind and soft spoken, preferring the quiet of a library over the company of people, her family being the few exceptions. Lanfear was blunt and put up with no one's shit, but loved to be in a crowd sharing stories of her past adventures. Raine, while certainly less talkative like Raeth, always found themselves gravitating toward people and shared Lanfear's bluntness and low tolerance for fools.

Now abilities were where the differences truly were. Raeth was a powerful wizard, highly skilled in the arts of illusion and enchantment. She figured out fairly early on that her child sadly didn't share her magical aptitude but instead shared in Lanfear's physical talents. Raine can remember clearly the first time Lanfear took her old glaive out of storage and began teaching them how to wield it. The training was grueling and at times difficult with Lanfear being unable to properly demonstrate and having to rely largely on words and correcting Raine's stances and grips. But oh what a thrill it was for the young elf to see the pride in their mothers eyes when they were able to finish their first pattern dance without flaw. They remember running to their mum afterward and the oddly sad smile on her face as she looked at the glaive in their hands. That was the first and only time they would hear someone say "you're just like your mother". Between the pride of being able to do something like their mother and the confusion over their mum's reaction they never ended up asking why Lanfear had a two-handed weapon when...

Pain radiates from their shoulder, dragging Moiraine from their memories as phantom pain spikes through nerves that no longer exist. They struggle to sit up, body instinctively wanting to support itself in a way that is no longer possible. They slowly look down their left side, barely registering that there's someone else in the room with them as they stare silently at what should have been there. They think they may have made a noise, maybe said something to the tiefling beside them and Akuji maybe responding. They honestly couldn't say for sure as a single thought repeats itself in their mind, and it only grew louder when they caught sight of their reflection or rather their lack of one causing them to pull their black hair in front of their eyes. Correction. White hair.
