Work Text:

“And ever since Dolores and Mariano broke up—”

Camilo’s head snaps up. Isabela and Mirabel, whose conversation he hasn’t been following at all until his sister was name dropped look at him wide eyed and confused. Isabela’s eyebrows furrow slowly, and she always looks like he’s judging him.

Not that that matters. Camilo almost chokes on his juice in an effort to speak. “Dolores and Mariano did what?” he squeaks.

Mirabel’s smile is sympathetic, but Isabela just rolls her eyes. “Where have you been? Living under a rock?”

Camilo is still staring at them with wide eyes, his head spinning. This is… this means… Mirabel elbows her sister in the side, giving her a glare, then she smiles at Camilo again. “Did you really not know? Everyone does. They are both fine, it wasn’t a bad breakup.”

That really doesn’t help the spinning in his head. Why did no one… Why did no one tell him?

(Because no one knows about his feelings for his sister, obviously. Because no one can know.)

“Since when?” he mutters, and Mirabel rubs the back of her neck. Isabela huffs.

“A week?”

A week. A whole week that Camilo had spent seething in jealousy, slowly trying his best to accept the situation, and all of it for nothing. A week.

Quickly, Camilo stands up, almost toppling his chair over, before brushing down his ruana.

“Gotta go!”

He hears Isabela hiss something at her sister, but he really doesn’t care about that. Honestly, he doesn’t even know what he’s going to do—he can’t tell Dolores about his feelings, obviously, so that’s not happening. Still, he needs to see her. He needs to make sure that this is real, that at least for now, she’s single again, she belongs to no one but herself.

He skids to a stop in front of Dolores’ room, almost tripping over himself as he goes to knock.

“Camilo,” a voice behind him suddenly resounds, one that always sends shivers down his spine. Warm, calming, oh so gentle. His lovely, caring big sister. “Do you need something?”

Camilo is sure he’s a little red when he turns to face her, but that’s fine, she heard him run here anyway. It’s fine, it’s easily explained. Finally, he looks up at Dolores—and she’s radiant as always. Still a little taller than him, her hair curly and her eyes big. Her lips slightly pursed, as they mostly tend to be.

“Uh,” he gets out, fiddling with his ruana. “I heard you broke up with Mariano from Isabela and Mira, so I, uh, wanted to make sure you’re okay.”

It’s not exactly a lie, and he puts his most convincing smile on his face. By now, his heart rate is slowing, too, so that’s working out in his favor.

Dolores smiles, and it feels like the sun is shining directly into his eyes. She reaches out to ruffle his hair.

“You’re so sweet. I’m okay, yes.”

And God, he’s okay too. For now.
