late night (kitchen)

Summary:

College makes you a busy person, but it also makes you find ways to have time with the people you love.

Notes:

Wanted to try the 'they hate me' 'Is in love but bad at showing it' character dynamic

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

You might think it's a good idea, moving in with someone you've known since freshman year of high school. You might even think its a great idea since you love being with the person in question, but it's definitely was not a good idea moving in with that same person if your both busy people.

The first few days were alright they were nice great even, we would sit in the kitchen getting all our stuff ready for the year, helping each other pick classes, bake together, talk.

Then the semester started, at first it wasn't that busy for any of us so we still had time to talk and hangout, fast forward two weeks later and you're showered with assignments, essays, quizzes, all that stuff.

Soon enough I also became busy, We drift apart slightly, and it hurts. Despite being right in front of one another, we barely had time for anything other than greetings.

That is, until yesterday.

I couldn't sleep, and apparently neither could you. I was brewing a cup of tea so I would at least get some work done, I sang while doing so, it was a Mitski song, 'Goodbye, My Danish Sweetheart', it reminded me of you.

I didn't realize you were there with me until I saw your reflection on the window. I had stopped singing and turned to look at you, suddenly feeling awkward. There was an uncomfortable silence in the room.

"Couldn't sleep?" We say in unison, I cringe, you nervously laugh. A heartbeat passes.

"So, um, what are you doing at this time of-" You checked the clock 3:05 AM, "-day? I haven't seen you in a while" Your dimpled smile on display.

"You haven't seen me despite me being right here? Incredible what college does to people." I replied softly, voice dripping with sarcasm.

"I didn't mean to push you away. You know I've been busy, hell you've been busy."

My heart felt tight and maybe yours did too.

"I'm sorry that I expect so much from you all the time, I've just missed you. A lot" I say.

"So you don't hate me?" You asked lightheartedly.

"How could I ever hate you?"

My tea was long forgotten, all that mattered right now was how your eyes were one me and you were smiling. Your smile has always been so beautiful.
