I always knew you’d be
Mine. Before I had even met you.
I had made a garden for you.
Bought seeds, hoping that one would
Grow into you. Bloom into you.
I dug a hole, planted a seed, watered it
With care. This was going to be our garden.
I had hopes for what you would be,
What we would be. When you grew into
Oak, Birch, Pine,
Cactus, Palm, Snake
Strong, sturdy, like stone, but living
Like me, with me. But that was not you.
You grew to be Lithe,
Fluid,
Fragile, yet only in appearance.
For you were stronger than me,
Sturdier than me,
Held more life than I could give
You. You grew before my eyes, and wrapped
Your vines about my hands, lungs, heart,
Suffocating me with the love I gave to you.
So strong in your grip, yet so quiet in your
Promise: I will hold you together.
I hold you now.
We’ve held each other, in battle
In this bed. You are my roots and my leaves.
This is our garden.
We propagate our love as we share our oxygen
In this room. There is light streaming in.
Our photosynthesis begins again.
