All It Takes Is A Near Death Experience

Summary:

"You don't know how to dance?" Sero asks with a tilt of his head looking down at the dual haired man "We danced at Midoriya's wedding remember?"

Bad idea. Bad idea. Don't think about that amazing fucking night, not with Shoto standing so close.

"My family aren't exactly dancers and I was very drunk that night." Shoto replied pointedly with a scrunch of his nose at the memory of being completely intoxicated.

Cute.

"Would you uh like to dance with me?" Hanta asks after a moment of silence, moving his gaze from the dance floor to the man who stood by his side "Sober this time?"

"I'd like that very much."

OR

Sero was man enough to admit that he had a dumb stupid crush on Shoto Todoroki. He was also man enough to admit that the Number 3 Hero was definitely out of his league and wouldn't have any interest in someone like him. That is until the universe (that maldita puta) has Sero and Todoroki cross paths over and over again leading him to believe that maybe his feelings are reciprocated.

Notes:

Hi there! I've finally found the time to type out the first chapter to Sero & Shoto's story and I'm SO excited about this one! I had originally planned for it to be a one shot but decided to make it a short multi chapter story with less than five chapters :)

This will take place six months after 'It Started With A Wedding' and 10 years before 'You Can't Call A Student Shitty Hair, Bakugo!'

I hope you enjoy it!

I headcannon Sero as latino sooooo there will be some spanish words and sentences thrown in every so often - I'll put translations in the notes so everyone can understand :)

Chapter 1: Breakups, Joints, and Manga

Chapter Text

Sero considered himself a chill guy.

Really.

It took a lot for him to actually get upset over something - especially if it was something so miniscule, so trivial that it could even be funny. He could never find it in himself to truly be angry at stupid things he had no control over.

Until today that is.

He really should have gotten his key back from his ex before he dumped her. That one was on him but did she really have to trash his place?

Sero stepped into the penthouse he called home and felt the unfamiliar emotion of anger wash over him as he glanced around. The entire living room was destroyed - his couch was torn up as if someone took a knife to his (he wouldn’t put is past the woman if she did), feathers and cotton filled the air from his cushions and pillows, framed pictures were broken and ripped from the wall, the glass coffee table that sat in the center of the living room was shattered. Decorative vases and pots were shattered.

The worst part was the word 'asshole' scribbled on almost every surface of his home, walls and all.

Fuck.

He didn’t even want to look in the kitchen or bedrooms.

With a curse he bent down to pick up one of the framed photos and wiped off the remaining glass and smiled down at the photo of his friends that had been taken at Midoriya’s wedding. His arms were slung around Karminari and Mina while Kirishima had his arms wrapped around Bakugou and Kaminari, huddling them all in together as the photographer snapped the picture. He couldn’t help but take in just how young they were - fresh faced graduates from UA who were just getting their name out into the world. Damn he really missed those days when all his friends were together. Now they're were all off being big time heroes, living in different cities or countries. It was crazy to think that this is where they'd all end up.

Sighing he set the frame photo down and glanced around once more.

There’s no way he’s going to be able to sleep here tonight.

Pulling out his phone he took note of the time seeing that it was only 6 pm, grateful that it wasn’t too late to call his friend. He pressed the phone to his ear and navigated through his apartment to pack things for an overnight stay.

“Hello the platonic love of my life.” Kaminari greets loudly before whispering “Toshi is right next to me, I have to say that.”

Sero chuckled and entered his bedroom with scowl noticing that not even here was saved from the woman scorned “Hey.”

“Uh oh I know that voice. What’s up Sero?” Denki asks with a chuckle.

“Do you think I can stay over tonight?” Sero asks, pinching the bridge of his nose tiredly.

“Sure but uh dude, you live in a freaking penthouse. Why do you want to stay here?” Denki questioned, “Or like your girlfriend’s place, what’s her name again - Mari?.”

Denki definitely knew his ex’s name but constantly pretended he forgot it. It wasn’t a secret that the blonde wasn’t a fan of the woman - always claimed she was snotty and thought she was better than everyone just because she was a well known model.

Sero hadn’t noticed anything at first or cared to get in the middle of his ex and best friend’s little spats. Mari was nice and had come from a Spanish speaking household like his so it was easy to get along with her - it wasn't often that Sero found someone he could openly speak his mother's language to or have the same love for Hispanic food. Mari, before he realized what a shitty person she is, was perfect for him. That is until she began insulting his friends…to his face. Her passive comments about them - mostly about their appearances - had gotten on his nerves but he really drew the line when Mari called Mina ugly in some not so nice words.

Insulting the guys was one thing - they had tough skin and could dish it back but Mina? Confident Mina who never said a bad thing about anyone? Their favorite girl in the world? No way. No one spoke badly about Ashido Mina and got away with it - it was an unspoken rule amongst the Bakusquad. You messed with Mina - you messed with them all.

Sero groaned and ran a hand through his hair “Yeah I sort of dumped her today hence why I need to stay the night at your place. She sort of trashed the penthouse. Like the entire place.”

Denki whistled lowly “Damn man. I knew that bitch was crazy. Fuck see, she even made me call her a bitch. She was the worst! Thank god you dumped her ass. Anyways sure yeah you can stay - Toshi won’t mind. I’m sure he’d like a break from all the wedding talk. Is there anything you need?”

Hanta chuckled and dug through his closet wincing when he saw his cut up clothing “Some clothes? Nothing was safe from her wrath dude. I’m going to need to replace everything I own.”

“Shit.” Denki laughs out “Good thing you’re rich as fuck. It shouldn’t be a problem to replace everything.”

“It’s not but it doesn’t make it less annoying.” Sero replied giving up on the idea of packing anything.

“Hitoshi will have something you can borrow. You two are around the same height.” Denki mused to himself “They might be a little big, you know the man has bulked up more these past few years. Fuck he’s so hot now.”

Sero huffed with a smile and proceeded to grab the few essentials Mari had left untouched - how fucking nice of her - and stuffed them in a small duffle bag he had managed to find lodged in his closet “I get it, I get it you find your fiance hot as hell. Please stop talking about it.”

“Sorry dude.” He didn’t really sound sorry at all “Oh by the way, Shinsou and I are having some friends over tonight to watch a movie. Maybe that’ll help you relax after finding your place trashed.”

Sero let out a laugh “Yeah maybe. Okay I’ll be over in a bit. I can't stay here much longer without wanting to punch a wall or something.”

“Woah you’re really mad.” Denki notes in awe “Well let’s hope my surprise relaxes you a bit.”

“Surprise?”

“Yes surprise. Now hurry your ass up so we can smoke some before all my guests arrive.” Kaminari orders bossily.

“Sheesh okay I’m on my way.” Sero states with a roll of his eyes unable to hide his own smile.

After ending his call with Denki, Sero requested that his locks be changed to the apartment management and made a call to a cleaning service to have his home swept clean and to not leave a single thing behind besides his personal items. It was inconvenient and pissed him off that he’d have to buy new furniture, decorations and clothing but there wasn’t anything else he could do.

The train ride to Kaminari and Shinsou’s home was quick and soon he found himself standing outside the apartment door - he could hear the faint sounds of people talking and laughing. Looks like their guests had already arrived.

So much for a smoke session with Denki.

With a deep sigh he knocked on the door. It didn’t take long before he was met with the beaming smile of his best friend “Sero! Come in!” He grabbed his friend’s wrist and dragged him into the apartment.

“Sero’s here!”

Greetings and shouts of hello met his ears as he was pulled into the living room where familiar faces sat around - Jirou and Momo lounged on the sofa huddled together, Mina and Testutestu sat on the recliner, the pink girl on her boyfriend’s lap, Shinsou was splayed on the couch his arm resting on the back where Denki no doubt was just sitting and finally his gaze landed on none other than Shoto Todoroki.

Oh fuck.

It had been awhile since he’d been around the number 3 hero - since Midoriya’s wedding at least. His stomach clenched at the thought of that fucking magical night. Flashes of Todoroki pressed against him, arms lazily slung around his shoulders, their lips brushing just slightly. It was the object of his fantasies for the past two years. Seeing the dual haired man again stirred up something in him.

He shot Kaminari an accusatory look - the idiot knew of his feelings towards the man and had even grilled him about the wedding incident after it happened - only to be met with a cheeky grin. So this was the surprise. Pushing those feelings aside he smiled and waved at the group “Hey guys.” He greets and throws himself on the couch next to Shinsou and Todoroki pointedly avoiding eye contact with the latter.

“Heard your place got trashed dude.” Jirou states with a chuckle pressing herself closer to her girlfriend’s side “What did you do to the poor girl?” '

Her statement sounded like a joke but there was an undertone of something else in it too. He knew what most people thought of him these days and the rumors didn’t exactly help. Since his career as a pro hero and model had taken off, Japan had labeled him as the country’s biggest and more desirable playboy. Mr. Fuck em and dump em.

That of course was the furthest from the truth. Mari had been the first person since high school that he had actually dated or slept with for that matter - other people (men and women alike) were just casual dates he went on. Nothing ever came out of it besides the paparazzi having a field day with the pictures of him with a new person every few weeks.

“Just broke up with her. She wasn’t happy about it.” He leaned his head back against the couch feeling exhaustion come over him. He had just come home from a day of patrol and didn’t have a chance to rest. He was fucking tired.

“Why’d you dump her dude? Not that I care, I hated that bit-heffer.” Kaminari corrects seeing Jirou’s glare, placing himself on Shinsou’s lap who wrapped his arm around his fiance, holding him close.

Hanta felt his face grow warm at all the attention and eyes on him - heterochromatic eyes to be specific. He rubbed the back of his neck “Just wanted to end things. She said some pretty nasty stuff about the squad - I got tired of it and kinda realized she was a really shitty person.” He shrugged “Didn’t help that she said stuff about Min.”

“Me?!” Mina screeched rising to her feet “Tell me what the hell that bitch said so I can melt her face off”! She demanded only to be held back by her boyfriend.

Sero waved a hand “Don’t waste your breath Min. I’m not gonna tell you what she said. Anyways it’s done and over. I really don’t want to talk about it anymore.”

“Okay , okay so your apartment. How trashed are we talking?” Jirou asks, leaning forward in interest “Your couch?”

“Ripped open.”

“Bedroom?”

“Destroyed.”

“Clothes?”

“Shredded.”

“Your manga?”

“My poor babies are gone too.”

“Kitchen?”

Sero pondered that for a minute before shrugging “Didn’t even try to go in there. Like I said, the entire place.”

“Damn.” Jirou threw her head back and laughed, “You really know how to pick them.”

"Kyouka, be nice to Sero! He's going through a breakup!" Momo chide elbowing her girlfriend in the side only for Jirou to laugh harder.

Hanta shot her the finger and rose to his feet “I’m going to go out and take a smoke. That fine Denks?”

Kaminari waved a hand carelessly “Sure dude. Whatever you want.”

“Thanks man.” He ruffled the blonde's hair not before grabbing a pre rolled joint from the counter earning a yell of protest from Denki and walked onto the balcony.

With a deep sigh Hanta lit the joint and stuck it between his lips, inhaling the smoke enjoying the way it settled into his lungs and burned deliciously.

Shit this was exactly what he needed right now.

Fuck Mari honestly.

He was hurt to an extent but he was happy to be out of the six month relationship he realized he was trapped in.

Leaning against the railing of the balcony, Sero hung his head tiredly taking in the relaxing sounds of the city below him and the feel of the fall breeze against his skin. It was nice to enjoy some sort of silence - his life lately had been hectic from juggling a needy and demanding girlfriend to pro hero duties that always left him a little worse for wear. The balcony door slid open getting his attention. Thinking it was Denki, Sero left his head hanging. “Sorry for taking your joint dude but I needed it after today.”

“You looked like you needed it.” A voice that definitely wasn’t Kaminari spoke, making him lift his head quickly.

Todoroki stood in the threshold of the balcony and kitchen before stepping into the cold and shutting the door behind him. Sero took the time to finally admire the man he could openly admit he had a crush on - the sweater he wore hung loose around his no doubt toned body and his shoulder length hair was pulled into a messy bun, strands falling over his perfectly sculpted face. It was almost a crime for someone to look that good.

“Todoroki!” Sero exclaimed, stepping back slightly  “Sorry I thought you were Denki.”

Todoroki shot him an apologetic smile “Sorry should I have made myself known sooner?”

Sero shook his head with a laugh “No it’s fine. What are you doing out here?” He asked, watching as Todoroki made himself comfortable next to him on the railing.

“It got pretty loud in there and I wanted to check on you.” The man says with a shrug and plucks the joint from Sero’s painted fingers making him gape as he takes a hit.

Todoroki must have noticed his shocked expression and offered him a cheeky grin “What? Didn’t think that I smoked?”

Hanta let out a laugh of disbelief as the joint was returned to him “Actually no. This is actually a surprise.”

“Who do you think taught the Dekusquad how to smoke?” Todoroki asks with that same smile that suddenly made his insides turn to absolute mush.

“No way.” He breathes out with wide eyes. There was no way in hell that Shoto Todoroki taught his uppity goody goody friend ground to fucking smoke weed. He was pretty sure Iida would have had a damn heart attack if that was even suggested to him.

Todoroki raised a perfectly shaped brow “My brother, Natsuo, is an avid smoker, he let me take a hit from his bong one day during our first year. After that I sort of enjoyed the feeling it gave me and brought it to school.” He shrugged again as if this information was making Sero’s head fucking spin “The others were against it at first.” His smile turned mischievous “Until I let them take a few hits.”

“Holy shit.” Sero threw his head back laughing “I can’t believe Shoto Todoroki was a bad influence. Color me surprised.”

Todoroki tilted his head, his lips turned up slightly “What? Thought you and Kaminari were the only stoners in class A?”

“Yes and I took pride in the title. Now you’ve gone and ruined it. I hope you're happy” Sero pointed out with a pout and relaxed against the railing again as Todoroki snickered next to him.

“Absolutely positively happy. Can’t you tell?” The dual haired man deadpans, making Sero snort.

The two grew silent watching the bustling street below them and feeling their bodies buzz with a slight high.

“Sorry about your apartment.” Todoroki suddenly begins, fidgeting with the hem of his shirt nervously “That sucks.” Sero couldn’t help the chuckle at the other’s poor attempt at comforting

“It’s alright. Really. I’m glad it’s over. She wasn’t good for me.”

Todoroki hummed but said nothing at all. Sero appreciated that. It was nice to be around someone who didn't feel the need to fill the silence with mindless chatter though he usually didn't mind, today was the exception. It made Shoto's presence all that much better.

“You mentioned your mangas were destroyed - if you’re wanting to read any, my collection has expanded since our time at UA, you can borrow some if you’d like.” Todoroki offers, side-eyeing him but doesn’t move other than that.

“Really?”

Todoroki nodded “We shared manga in high school, might as well share manga as adults. Except it’ll be a little more inconvenient since we aren’t neighbors anymore.” He adds in with a scrunch of his nose.

Sero couldn’t help but think back on those days of nervously knocking on Todoroki’s door with a fresh copy of whatever manga they had been reading together in one hand and snacks in the other. Todoroki would answer with that small smile he reserved for certain friends and welcomed in for their weekly readings.

It had been a secret thing that they had enjoyed doing during their off days at school - when Todoroki was just a little too tired to train or hang out with his friends and Sero had wanted some silence instead of the non-stop noise of his own group.

Sero couldn’t remember exactly how it started or who initiated the hang outs first but he remembered not really minding what was happening. He had enjoyed spending time with Todoroki even if the boy had rarely said anything. But Sero didn’t need words to know that Todoroki was enjoying their time together by the way his eyes would brighten when Sero would ask about his manga or offer a snack when the boy had been too engrossed in the story to pay attention to food.

“That’s true. Thank you for the offer, I may have to take you up on that - I’ll be fresh out of manga until I can rebuild my collection.” He groans realizing the amount of yen he’ll have to spend to replace his favorite series.

Todoroki cleared his throat nervously “And if you’re up for it. Maybe” Sero’s heart began to race as he took notice of the blush that suddenly appeared on the dual haired man’s face “We can start those weekly manga readings we used to have. I know we’re both busy these days but..” He trailed off looking away shyly.

Was his heart about to beat out of his chest? Yes it was.

“Oh um yeah sure. I’d- I’d like that.” Sero stutters out feeling his own face heat up “Why don’t I give you my number and we can try to find a time that works for us?”

Todoroki nodded his head and slowly pulled out his phone for Hanta to add his number in.

Sero inwardly cursed as his fingers shook while adding in his name and phone number to Todoroki’s contacts.

“Here.” He hands back the device with a smile “We’ll set something up soon?”

“Sure.” Todoroki murmured with a small nod “I should probably head back inside before Momo and Shinsou complain about leaving them with Jirou and Kaminari.” His lips twitched slightly in amusement.

Sero chuckled and snuffed out the joint “I’ll come with you. Denki will complain if I’m out here too long and delay movie night any longer.” Before he realized what the fuck he was doing he reached for Todoroki’s sleeve spinning him around and pulled him close, to where they were nearly pressed against each other “Thanks for that Roki, talking was a good distraction.”

“Anytime Sero.” Tororoki breathed out looking up at him from beneath multi-colored lashes. The sight brought him back to that damn wedding and the feeling of having the man pressed against him. He felt his stomach twist and his heartbeat speed up.

Shoto Todoroki was too fucking pretty.

Reluctantly, before he did something completely idiotic, Sero released him and opened the sliding door gesturing for the man to go in before him. When he entered his eyes met Kaminari who wiggled his brows teasingly and looked between the two suggestively.

The ravenette gave him a pointed look and rejoined everyone in the living room just in time for the movie to start. He should have known better than to sit between Shinsou and Todoroki again because he soon found himself pressed closer to Todoroki as Kaminari squeezed in to sit next to his fiance.

“Sorry.” Sero murmured quietly hoping he wasn’t making the other man uncomfortable with just how close they were sitting. He was sure his fucking head was going to explode when Todoroki's thigh pressed against his.

“It’s okay.” Todoroki’s warm breath was against his ear as he spoke “I don’t mind.”

It was then that Hanta realized that he was well and truly fucked.
