Work Text:
In hindsight, they probably should've expected this. It may be sad, but it’d honestly be better for everyone involved if the famous class 1A just stopped trying to have a normal trip away from campus. You know, something that literally everyone in their age was doing regularly without some kind of villain attack effectively stumping down on all the fun and relaxation they wanted to get as average teenagers.
That was exactly the problem: they were just normal kids for Kami’s sake! They wanted to have fun too! But no, they just had to have the worst luck ever and act as living embodiment of a villain magnet. Couldn’t the criminals just let them chill in peace for one freaking day?
Despite all of the experience he definitely shouldn’t have as a sixteen-year old, Kirishima still froze to the ground at the sight of villain attack on a jewelry shop in the mall they had gone out to for their another attempt at having a nice class trip. They were barricading themselves in, taking all of the shop’s customers and workers as hostages.
Yet somehow, what shocked him even more than Murphy’s law spitting into their collective salad and tea was the fact that the members of the Dekusquad (dubbed as such by Mina) didn’t seem at least one bit scared. Their auras changed immediately after they spotted the attack, but they weren’t afraid as the rest of his classmates and himself were - they just seemed so tired and done. It reminded him more of Aizawa-sensei than of the righteous, innocent and goody-goody cinnamon rolls he knew.
“Ah shit, here we go again.” Todoroki’s voice was always deadpan, but he never swore. None of the Dekusquad did - they were just too pure for it, and even if one of them would slip up, Iida would surely lecture the unfortunate soul about it for two hours and they’d never do it again.
“Fuck. I believe that’s code crimson eight delta, guys.” … Or not. Why did the class rep of all people just swear? And what the hell did that code thing mean? The rest of them outside of the Dekusquad were still shell-shocked, so clearly they weren’t supposed to understand.
“Yep! Seems about right. But could someone please remind me why the fuck do we have to do this again?” Okay, at this point Kirishima was willing to bet that either this was some very, very weird dream, or all of his presumed innocent classmates swore. Midoriya cussing was somehow even more startling than Iida doing it.
“Because, for some ungodly reason, the only hero patrolling this mall today is Mt Lady and she flat-out refuses to engage in a quirkless fight. Every. Damn. Time.” Uraraka somehow managed to look scarier than she did while almost kicking Bakugou’s ass into oblivion during the sports festival, and that was saying something.
“Oh yeah. That. Anyways, Froppy?” No seriously, why did Midoriya sound so done ? What were they even doing? None of them had their provisional licenses yet, and they weren’t trained in hostage situations. They should leave it to the pros, but Dekusquad seemed ready to break right through the invisible barrier put in place by one of the villains’ quirk.
“Ready when you are Deku, kero.”
“I already sent Shouta the code and our localization. ETA fifteen minutes.” Wait, wasn’t Shouta Aizawa-sensei’s name…? That couldn’t be it, Iida would probably rather let his brother die than drop any kind of formalities towards their teacher.
“Roger. I think we should be done before that though, right?”
“It’s code eight delta , we should be fine. Come on guys, time to work!” Kirishima still didn’t understand anything of what was going on in front of him, but he wasn’t going to question Midoriya’s faith in whatever they were about to do, even if, statistically speaking, he very much should.
“Aye aye, boss!”
“Ugh. Did I mention I’m running on twenty minutes of sleep today?”
“You’ll be fine Firefrost, kero.”
After that completely-not-alarming conversation, which the whole class clearly heard but didn’t really take in due to their collective brain malfunction, the Dekusquad started each doing their own thing, prompting even more questions. Midoriya jumped up to the ceiling and somehow managed to unscrew the vents’ entrance and climb into it, Asui following right after him, Iida and Uraraka moved towards the quirk barrier calmly and Todoroki was already on the phone with police.
The whole situation did not get better when they heard the shouts of “Vibe check, bitch!” and “All hail to frog supremacy!” coming from inside the barrier. Nor did it get easier to process when Iida and Uraraka started emanating a choking aura that promised anarchy, pain and chaos to unwirl and quite literally shot themselves at the remaining villains as soon as the barrier broke down. Through it all Todoroki, Todoroki of all people, for goodness’s sake didn’t that boy have close to none social skills , was just walking around the battlefield, somehow dodging all the stray blows of his vicious and drowning in bloodlust friends, slowly evacuating all of the hostages from the shop, calming them down with precise instructions and unwavering serenity.
After approximately ten minutes, during which none of the remaining class 1A students moved an inch, the fight was already over and the police were swarming the place, taking everyone’s statements and arresting criminals restrained by… Were those Midoriya and Asui’s shoelaces? Seriously?
“Are all the problem children alive?” The arrival of Aizawa-sensei seemed to bring class 1A back into the land of the living, but it took a few more seconds for anyone to formulate a verbal answer.
“I- I think so?” They were right before his eyes, back to their cheery and pure personalities and chatting with police officers, addressing some of them by first names, but honestly Kirishima was questioning every aspect of his own existence right now so he couldn’t be sure.
“Right. And did they do anything illegal? I’ll actually kill them if I’ll have to help them cover up a murder again .”
“I’m sorry, what?” Yaoyorozu was speaking everyone’s minds. What the actual fuck did that murder part mean?!
“... Nevermind, you never heard me. Plausible deniability and all that.” And with that unhelpful order thrown at them, their teacher took off and started his own interrogation with members of Dekusquad, who all shot him their best angelic looks as he called them ‘little arsonists’ and ‘anarchy gremlins’, which was both unfairly funny and scarily justified.
Suffice to say, Kirishima had a lot of questions . He wasn’t sure if he really wanted to know the answers for them, but the fact remained that he’d be left trying to puzzle out everything that went down that day for the next week, usually during late night hours spent in contemplative silence in Sero’s room.

“Problem child. Code crimson?”
“It was completely justified, Dadzawa. Mt Lady was patrolling here, theoretically, and as you can see she still didn’t even show up.”
“What the hell is she thinking? I get that she’s relatively new, but she’s doing more celebrity work than any part of actual hero duty!”
“Uraraka, language.”
“Japanese.”
“Don’t. I know you’re petty, but you’re going to encounter that level of unprofessionalism on a daily basis, you can’t go on a rampage over it every time or people won’t like you.”
“That’s where you’re wrong, sensei! Such bold display of breaking ground rules shall never be overlooked, and if society refuses to open its eyes then we’ll have to make them do it by-”
“No Tenya, we won’t organise another riot, kero. That didn’t work the last two times, remember? The only one to show up to scream our lungs out about how Endeavour could be charged with multiple acts of felony and arson was Dabi, remember?
“Will we be breaking into Mt Lady’s office? I still have some silly string and spray paint left from our last graffitti session.”
“The one on the Hero Commission's headquarters?”
“No, that was two weeks ago. I believe our last silly string party was in Kamui Wood’s agency.”
Shigaraki backed away slowly. He was planning on kidnapping Dabi’s brother, but, upon closer consideration, he’d rather go back to Kurogiri’s bar and cry until he convinced himself that whatever he just witnessed was his sleep-deprivation-induced hallucination. That would be a much better option for his both physical and mental health.
