Work Text:
Today was Kaito’s favorite day of the year.
April Fool’s.
Most of his friends didn’t celebrate it, and some might argue that Kaito celebrated it every day, but Kaito didn’t care because he saved his biggest tricks and pranks for this day.
* * *
His day began with switching out Aoko’s flour, sugar, and salt. He also may or may not have rigged a cold bucket of water above the Inspector’s closet door – on the inside of said closet. Kaito even made a quick pitstop at Hakuba’s to swap out his Sherlock Holmes ensemble for a Hercule Poirot costume.
As the day went by, he slowly started playing bigger and bigger pranks.
Impersonate the teacher.
Fill the cafeteria pies with playing cards.
Let loose all of his doves in the Entomology Club Room.
Impersonate the principal.
And other things of the like. Whenever he wasn’t pranking someone, he was mentally running through tonight’s heist. He hoped that the police had thought that the notice was just a prank, but with Tantei-kun on their side, he could never be sure.
At least he had some new tech on his side. It really had been too easy to sneak into Tantei-kun’s tent to steal a spare pair of glasses and a single sticker.
Thank goodness Jii’s tech-friend was able to replicate it for him for his monocle.
As he was planning, and dodging Aoko’s mop that was retribution for his switcheroo that morning, he kept an eye on the clock and discreetly placed a bucket of water next to his desk.
Time crept slowly as he watched the clock, patiently waiting for his opportunity.
Eventually, that opportunity came.
It was five minutes before the bell.
Akako was standing near the windows chatting with Aoko.
The time was right.
Kaito stood, grasping his water bucket by the handle. He slinked over to where the two girls were talking. He stood behind Akako…
And dumped the whole bucket of water over her head.
The class became as silent as the grave.
She turned, scarlet eyes flashing. “What have you done?” she screeched.
Kaito looked at her bemused. “Huh,” he observed. “That worked in the movie.”
The class went even stiller, if that was possible, faces frozen in array of shock, anger, and amusement bordering on laughter.
Akako and Aoko lunged for Kaito in unison.
He just laughed and danced out of the way of their dual attack before leaping out the window, landing skillfully on the balls of his feet and running away, howling with laughter.
Aoko and Akako looked at each other. In that single look, they managed to convey that they wouldn’t let Kaito get away with this and would punish him when they saw him next.

The heist went as planned.
Because it was April Fool’s, the police had sent a token force to protect the aquamarine. Against the advisement of Tantei-kun, he guessed.
The boy himself was in attendance though and it was quite a sight to see when he realized that Kaito was using his own tech against him.
Kaito had found the boy on the roof, tapping his foot angrily. They had a quick discussion about morals and technology, Kaito checked the gem, chucked it at the kid, and glided away.
Today had been a good day.
