Spring 1
Dear Mom and Dad,
I’ve made it to Pelican Town. Mayor Lewis was very kind, he gave me some parsnip seeds and a little bit of money since I had to spend all of my savings to get here. I haven’t met very many people yet but they seem nice. There doesn’t seem to be any internet or cell service in the valley, it’s an eight-hour drive to get into cell range; mail seems to be the main source of outside communication here. There is a clinic in town (thankfully) and the doctor, Harvey, said that he already gets shipments in of what I need and it won’t be a problem to up the quantity. I know we were all nervous about that. It seems there’s at least someone else like me in town, which is good; I’ll have to go around and try to meet everyone tomorrow. The future is looking bright.
Love, your Child.
Spring 4,
Dear Mom and Dad,
I have officially met everyone in town except one person, they say he lives in the old tower down in the forest but no one answers my knocking. I’ll give it a few more days. Things are going really well, my parsnips are growing well (I think) and I’ve cleared up some of the farm. There’s an old greenhouse on the property that the roof’s caved in on but it seems at least the foundation is salvageable. I don’t currently have the time for cleaning up the building.
This nice fisherman, Willy, gave me one of his old rods; I’ve been catching some cool fish and a lot of trash.
Up in the mountains, there’s a nice man, Linus, who lives in a tent. I’m not sure if he’s homeless or he just likes living the way he is, but he likes anything edible I find around the town. There’s a nice little patch as far south in the forest as I can go that grows spring onions, I like to bring Linus some.
The Carpender, Robin, is really sweet. She lives in the mountains with her husband, Demetrius, her son, Sebastian, and her daughter, Maru. They all seem rather nice so far.
The old community center is locked up tight but in much disarray, it looks so sad sitting north of town all alone and decrepit.
I told you a little about Harvey in my last letter, he lives above the clinic and is very non-judgemental.
The general store is Pierre’s General Store and is right next to the Clinic. Pierre and his family live behind the store; I don’t know much about Pierre’s personality because he’s so stressed about the Joja Mart taking over his business. His wife, Caroline, is keeping as calm as she can in the stressful environment. Their daughter, Abigail, is nice but not overly so. She seems to care more about her own little world than what’s going on in town. Which is good, she should be able to be a teenager.
Then there’s Granny Evelyn and George who take care of their grandson Alex. Evelyn is very sweet and takes care of the flowers around the town center. George is grumpy but likes to watch TV inside most days. Alex is very confident in himself and his sports ability.
Also in town is Jodi, who’s raising her two sons, Sam and Vincent, alone while her husband is away fighting in the war.
Next to Jodi’s is Emily and Hailey’s house. The two sisters are keeping the house tidy while their parents are away, they haven’t said where “away” is but that’s alright.
The Stardrop Saloon I’m told is very lively on Friday nights, but Gus lives and runs the place. He’s such a kind guy.
Mayor Lewis lives in the biggest house in town, he’s been nice to me. He also ??? gives me money for small “Achievements” ?? I’m not sure what’s up with that or how he keeps track but it’s a little odd.
South of Grandpa’s farm is Marnie’s ranch. She’s alright so far, she has her daughter Jas and her nephew Shane living with her. Jas hasn’t warmed up to me yet but Shane has been nothing but rude to me, maybe he’s like that with everyone though; I’m giving him time.
In the forest too, is Leah, she likes to stay to herself a lot and I’ve only seen her in passing a few times.
I think that’s everyone I’ve met so far, I hope you’re doing alright at home. I’ve been feeling a little homesick today.
Love, your Child.
Spring 17,
Dear Mom and Dad,
Things are weird here and its starting to creep me out a litle. So that old community center I wrote about last time, There are little Things living in there. This is going to sound crazy- and I feel like I’m going crazy- the things are like little apples with faces and tiny arms and legs. The Wizard (That’s the guy who lives in the Wizard’s tower in the forest) says that their called Junimos. Fuck, the Wizard had me sniff this potion so I could interact with the apple sprite things and I think I may just be hallucinating all of this. If this letter reaches you, at least I will know that I wrote it. The The Junimos are asking for things in certain rooms of the community center and I’m tempted to give them just to see what will happen. THEN- then there’s the Mines. There are Mines up in the mountains that i kid you not have MONSTERS in them. Actual live monsters that I’m meant to kill. I have no clue how this happened. I don’t know what’s real anymore.
With caution, Your Child.
Dear Hon,
How are you doing, sweety? I've missed you so much since you left. I hope the farming life is everything you hoped for.
Love, Mom.
P.S. I sent your favorite cookies
Dear Kid,
Have you settled into your new life yet? I can't believe you're all grown up now... Time sure flies. Now that you're gone I have all this extra money laying around, so I included a little gift.
Love, Dad.
Spring 28,
Dear Mom and Dad,
Thank you for the gifts. I’m sorry about my last letter, I was rather panicked and needed to warm up to the idea of the supernatural being natural. Why did you guys send two different letters? Anything going on that I should know about? There are a few new things on the farm, mainly a coop that Robin made for me. I haven’t yet gotten enough money together for a chicken from Marnie but I’m getting there. I’ve learned that the old broken down bus East of grandpa’s farm was once driven by Pam to the dessert a few hours away. I wonder if there’s cell service there but the magic in the valley along with the tall mountains all around might be what’s stopping the reception. The Junimos have given me gifts for completing their “Bundles” in the community center.
There are a few strange things I’ve noticed about the populace of Pelican Town, no one will accept gifts from me after I’ve given them one each day or two each week; they act like I’m not even trying to give them something. Sometimes they say the same thing that they’ve said before? It doesn’t happen often and I might be imagining it. There are a few people that I have no idea where they live and can’t normally talk to them or gift them anything? Like Gunther who runs the museum/library and Marlon and Gill who run the “Adventurers Guild.”
My crops also seem to grow very particularly. Every seed of the same crop I plant in one day grows at the same exact rate and is ready for harvest the same day. The same crops also take that exact amount of days to be ready for harvest. If they harvest multiple times like the strawberries, then the things all grow on the same day and in the same intervals.
This place is strange but I enjoy it here.
Love, your Child.
Dear Hon,
It's been so long since I heard from you, dear. Things are the same as ever back home. I miss you very much.
Love, Mom
P.S. Found an envelope with some money Grandpa left for you.
Dear Kid,
How is the country life going for you? It's been lonely here without you, but I'm proud of what you're doing.
Love, Dad
P.S. Found an envelope with some money Grandpa left for you.
Summer 10,
Dear Mom and Dad,
I won’t lie, I’m a little confused. I still don’t know why you two are sending different letters (also did you find two different envelopes from Grandpa or was it one with 1,000g in it?) I don’t think you’ve been receiving my letters, which begs the question of who they’re going to or where they end up otherwise.
So, I’ve just had chats with Lewis and Robin, neither of them delivers the mail, nor do they know who does. I’m going to ask Rasmodius if he knows anything about it. Update, he doesn’t know either. I asked Linus just in case and he said he usually just leaves packages and envelopes outside his tent and in the morning they’re gone. I think it may be some of the magic or creatures of the valley. I’m going to ask the teens if they started doing it as a prank and it got out of hand or something. They have no idea about it either, no one has ever questioned it. Maybe this is one of the reasons that Leah keeps to herself or why there are at least two alcoholics that drink way too much. I should ask them about it too.
Shane has brought up the fact that the decorations change in the town center and on all of the buildings between the 28th of one season and the 1st of another. Lewis and Robin take no responsibility for this either. Pam said that the same thing happens with the weather and trees. They have perfect seasons and switch between them through the night. Every festival has perfect weather too, it could be raining the day before and the day after but on the festival date it’s always sunny.
I’ve realized that I have experienced some strange things too, especially with time. Every day I wake up at 6AM on the dot. I also pass out if I’m awake past 2 in the morning. No matter if I’m halfway across town or three steps from my bed if the clock hits 2AM I pass out. It also happens if I get too hurt in the mine. I’m never more hurt when someone gets me out and there’s almost always something missing from my backpack. Marlon will go down to get a specific item if I pay him.
Love, your Child.
Fall 17,
There aren’t 28 days in each season are there?
Farmer
Dear Hon,
I saw an article about you in the local paper! It sounds like the country life is a good fit for you! I'm so proud of you. Take care, sweety.
Love, Mom.
Dear Kid,
I read an article about you in the local paper! I'm so impressed with your progress on the farm! Keep this up and dear old Dad might be retiring in a fern islands luxury bungalow after all ;).
Love, Dad.
Winter 16,
Dear whoever may be reading this,
There are merchants at the docks. There is a mermaid show. With mermaids. Real mermaids. There’s a guy with a submarine that goes down to insane depths and has a hatch in the bottom that opens up without flooding the sub. I can fish with a fishing rod in these insane depths (which shouldn’t be possible this close to shore on this beach anyways). This is crazy, it’s crazy that this is normal to me now.
The Farmer.
Summer 13, year 2,
Whoever’s out there,
I’ve forgotten any of the months’ names but I know there were some. The years were longer than 112 days but I don’t remember how much longer. Yoba wasn’t a god worshiped anywhere outside here but I know a lot about the whole religion now. It’s not normal to be friends with a shadow person and kill others of their kind in the mines in self-defense. It’s not normal for a museum curator to give you a dwarf translation guide that lets you understand the Dwarf in that other room of the mine entrance. I know logically that this isn’t normal but in this town? In this Valley? There are sprites that fix bridges and buses and greenhouses. There’s a secret wood to the west, that has a statue that seems to want something. There are chests down each 10 or so layers in the mines. The monsters you kill drop things, things like “magnate rings” that make anything around you fly into your backpack. Things don’t make sense here. But that really the joy of it.
The Farmer.
Dear Hon,
How are things going? You must really be making a fortune on that farm. Don't forget your dear old mother when you're a millionaire!
Love, Mom
P.S. Enjoy the cake!
Dear Kid,
I know you're busy on the farm and that's why you can't visit. I understand. You've been working so hard... keep it up and you can accomplish anything!
Love, Dad
P.S. Included some quality stone
Spring 1 year 3,
Uhhhh Holy Shit? My Grandpa’s ghost just showed up at my farm? He gave me a “statue of perfection”? What is this? I don’t understand what’s happened. Do I just continue after this? How do I just continue after this?
The Farmer of Pelican Town.
