smudged eyeliner and flower hairpins

Summary:

Gajeel never really cared much about how he looked or really even taking care of himself, but slowly Levy begins to change that.

Notes:

I cut my finger making dinner so writing this was agony but it's cute so idc

Work Text:

Gajeel narrowed his eyes, staring at Levy’s face. He noticed there were faint freckles across her cheeks, barely noticeable, he had only noticed them now because he was so close to her face. Maybe they would darken in the summer, when she was out in the sun more. That could happen, right? It’d be… cute.

“Gajeel, quit twitching,” Levy scolded, before she readjusted her hold on the eyeliner. “You just made me make the line all wobbly! I have to start over now!”

The dragon slayer rolled his eyes.

“Gajeel!” Her voice nearly cracked it got so shrill. “You did it again!”

He smirked, wondering how many times he could mess up one of her lines before the script mage caught on and realized he was doing it on purpose because he liked her being so close. He was learning so many things about her face, taking in all these little details. Like the fact that her eyebrows were just a touch darker than her hair, and her eyelashes were lighter, an almost sky blue.

Her lip puffed out in a pout. She laid her hand on his chest, putting more weight on it as she somehow managed to lean even closer. She couldn’t weigh more than ninety pounds, she was straddling his waist to keep him pinned to the couch, and it wasn’t uncomfortable in the least, even though he knew she was putting all of her weight on top of him.

“I would do something less detailed,” she said. “But I already did your other eye, and it looks damn good, so I’m not changing it.”

“Who gives a fuck if they match?” he asked.

“I care! This is my pride we’re talking about here! I don’t do makeup very often, and I’ll be damned if it looks shitty when I do, so quit twitching. Or I’ll stab your eye out, don’t test me. It’s right here and vulnerable.”

“Fine, fine. I’ll quit moving so much.” She still had to do his hair, and admittedly, that was even nicer than her doing his makeup. Levy was probably the only person he would ever admit it to, but he loved his hair being played with, it was part of the reason he’d kept it so long, even if it really did get in the way more often than not.

“Good.” She pressed the brush against his eyelid, drawing a dark, smooth line, extending it out much further than most people would, but she liked to get creative with it. “I think I’m going to curl your hair today.”

“Yeah, sure, whatever you wanna do.”

“But I did find these cute flower clips the other day so maybe I’ll do one small braid after and pin those in.” She pulled back, and placed the cap back on the eyeliner. “There we go, that’s done. We are going to be the best looking people at the grocery store.”

Usually, Gajeel knew he looked like he had rolled out the garbage, but ever since he’d gotten together with Levy, not only had he gotten better at taking care of himself just on his own time, but because of how much she loved to style his hair and pick out his outfits so he wasn’t wearing the same set of clothes for three days straight, he had been looking a lot better recently.

Levy slid off his middle and back to the floor, to Gajeel’s mild disappointment, and went to rifle through her bathroom in search of her curling iron. He could hear her swearing as she dug through the cluttered cabinets, and couldn’t help but smile.

He really could get used to morning routines like this.

“Hey, Lev!” He pushed himself up. “Let me do your makeup, bet I could do something cool.”

“Yeah, sure,” she agreed. “But use the pink liner, it’ll match my shirt.”

“Sure thing, Lev.”
