Chapter 1: Prologue

Chapter Text

[Y/N] “Bell” [L/N]
March, 1981
Solovetsky Islands

“You know Bell,” He turned his back to her, and she watched as the smoke from his cigarette floated up into the Arctic air. “They sent me here to kill you.” His voice was low, and Bell could sense the apprehension in it. He suddenly threw his cigarette into the ocean and turned back to face her.

She noticed almost immediately that his glasses were gone, and she was met with his icy blue eyes. Oh, how she loved those eyes. “And I can confidently say that I never planned on following through with those orders. You’re a hero Bell, and heroes shouldn’t be silenced.”

She was speechless. She knew that something was a little off with this trip, but she never could have imagined it would lead to this moment.
“Adler, I don’t know what to say.” His eyes locked with hers, and she could’ve sworn she saw the corner of his lips turn up slightly.

“You don’t have to say anything. I just need you to listen.” He took a few cautious steps toward her. “Bell, you’re the most important thing to me. I’ve lost many things in my life, but I’ll be damned if I let the CIA take you from me. We’re gonna go home and we’re gonna march into that building and show them we don’t take kindly to threats.”

He slowly walked up to her, grabbed her shoulder, pulled her in for a hug. She couldn’t remember the last time she had a hug, and the fact that it came from the most unreadable person she knew, made it even better. She wrapped her own arms around the taller man, and she felt as he laid his chin on the top of her head.

“I’m sorry for all the shit the CIA put you through…” she heard him let out a deep sigh “For everything I put you through.” She hugged the man even tighter at that, and she reflected on his words. “You’re the most important thing to me.” The words echoed through her mind. She knew she felt something for Adler, but she had begun to think it was one-sided, now, not so much.

Bell had a small smile on her face as the two pulled away. Adler looked down at her face and gave a smile of his own. “What are you smiling at Bell?” She cocked her head and looked up at him.
“Oh, it’s nothing. Just that my boss has a crush on me.” She spoke in a playful tone. Truth be told, she couldn’t be happier.

“Oh for Christ's sake, you can’t take anything seriously huh?” He punched her arm, and the two began the walk back to the car, side by side.
