Chapter Text
Friday the 13th of November - Parking Lot of the general store in downtown Capeside
As Joey sits in the back of the Witter Wagoneer, she ponders her current situation letting her thoughts roam. Stupid Dawson. Why did he insist on letting Pacey drive to the general store? He doesn’t even have his license, he is a horrible driver, and now she is stuck waiting here for those two to come back because Pacey “borrowed” the jeep without getting the keys. Again.
Joey was bored and still irritated at Dawson’s little fake bloody finger prank from earlier in the day. She doesn’t like to be scared, and it wasn’t a mean trick, but still. Although it was nice when he caught her eye at lunch and smiled at her. Maybe now that he and Jen are really over, and she is dating Cliff, he will finally see her. Maybe tonight's séance will be the night he finally realizes she isn’t just little Joey from down the creek. That she is a girl, not just his childhood friend.
While waiting in the car, a white man with dark brown hair approaches and gently taps on the window to get Joey’s attention. He seems friendly and this is Capeside after all, so not wanting to be rude, Joey gets out of the car to speak with him because the back window of the jeep is broken and can’t be opened.
The man wearing a dark blue coat and gold framed glasses introduces himself as David and shares with her that he had been driving all day and seems to have gotten lost while on his way to Providence. His voice is soft as he asks her for directions to get back on the right path.
Joey points him in the right direction and rattles off the street names for him to get back to the highway. She starts to turn back to the car thinking the conversation is over, but pauses when she realizes he is watching her. Not considering herself to be pretty and knowing she is wearing her staple tomboy apparel of jeans and her yellow sweater, Joey is confused and flattered by the attention he is showing her. Realizing he has been caught staring, David apologizes and explains his actions by telling Joey that she has the most beautiful brown eyes.
He steps closer to her as she shyly smiles at him, very unaccustomed to hearing compliments. Most of the time people turn away, refuse to make eye contact, or even cross the street to avoid the convict’s daughter, but this handsome stranger with the friendly smile is looking at her, talking to her. It has been a brief conversation, but Joey is sucked in by his kind eyes and charm.
David takes another step closer to Joey while smiling and making small talk about how tired he is from driving all day. As he wonders aloud if Joey knows if there is a hotel nearby, Joey turns slightly away to point in the direction of the closest hotel. As she turns, he reaches out to Joey’s arm and she feels a gentle prick of her skin, similar to a mosquito bite. As she turns back around to rub the spot, she starts to feel woozy and before she can slump to the ground, David has walked her to his car and bundled her into the backseat. She didn't make a sound as he tucked her feet into the car and closed the door. He quickly gets into the driver's seat of his sedan, starts the car and drives away into the dark night. No one was in the parking lot or walking past the store. No one was there to notice that Joey was gone.
