April Fool's

Summary:

Black Hat is pregnant, so he goes to tell Flug the good news. But then, because the universe is full of fuckery, tragedy strikes and sadness ensues.

Notes:

Based on the notion formed in my head of "what if Black Hat was pregnant, tries to tell Flug, but Flug doesn't believe him 'cause it's April Fool's?" But then this happened instead, and then that original thought that birthed this story ended up becoming almost entirely irrelevant.

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

Black Hat rested his head against the cool porcelain throne. A position the eldritch had gotten quite used to over the past several months. The reason why was so glaringly obvious, yet he himself had only come to realize within the last week. Black Hat brought his hand to his belly, were a small lump had already formed.

It was Dr. Flug's fault really. He had walked in on one of Black Hat's heats about half a year ago, one thing led to another and they'd been going at it like rabbits ever since. It only made sense that they would eventually then reproduce as such. Black Hat reched again unto the toilet, feeling a bit weak afterwords. The weakness was new, but it didn't surprise Black Hat considering the parasite growing in his belly.

Black Hat shakily got up from the toilet, wiped the edges of his mouth with a damp washcloth, and then placed his vantablack top hat back on his head. He hadn't told Flug yet of their new arrival, but Black Hat felt that now was as good of a time as any. The eldritch strutted his way over to the lab where he would presumably find his scientist. Walking because Black Hat was feeling too weak for a proper teleportation.

But Black Hat's strides came to a halt as he was suddenly overcome by a strange sense of unease. Something was wrong, but what? Then it hit him, more literally than Black Hat would have liked. Black Hat doubled over as a sharp, searing pain struck him in the abdomen. It wasn't showing any signs of going away, and Black Hat feared for the worst for his baby.

He tried running the rest of the way to the lab despite the intense amount of pain he was in. Tried being that he was actually moving barely any faster than when he was just idlely strolling. By the time he got there, tears were streaming down his face as he tried to ignore the growing dampness of his pants (its not blood it's not blood please don't let it be blood).

"Flug, I'mpregnantbutIthinkI'mlosingthebabyyou gottohelpme." Black Hat couldn't breath, he gasped for air as his body crumpled to the ground. Whether his erratic breathing was from the running or from his panicking he wasn't sure. Flug on the other hand was completely calm, too busy welding pieces of metal together to even bother turning around and looking at the weakened eldritch.

"Yeah yeah, ha ha, April Fool's, very funny. Nice try sir, but Demencia already got me with something like that today already and I'm not falling for it again. And besides, you already told me that I couldn't get you pregnant." ¡¿Que?! Did that fool of a scientist really think he'd be joking about something like this? Black Hat felt hurt that Flug wouldn't even believe him.

"I was wrong." At that, Flug finally swiveled his chair around, and Black Hat knew why. Black Hat, in any other circumstance, was far too proud to ever admit he was wrong, even as a prank. So that was how Flug knew the fiend was being serious.

"Jeeze Black Hat, you look terrible. I'm sorry to have to tell you this, but there's nothing I can do. E-even if I was a medical doctor, there'd be nothing I could do."

"No, you're joking right?" Desperation clawed at Black Hat's insides like it's own demon. Flug was his scientist, he could do anything. He had to be joking.

"I'm sorry Black Hat, I don't know what to do for you. My advice would be to take an Advil and wait for it to pass." Flug with a stupid look of pity written across his bagged face grabbed a bottle from his pocket and held it out to his demonic boss. Said demonic boss then snatched the bottle and immediately downed two pills dry.

"Fine, you're bloody useless anyway" Black Hat stormed out of the room, slamming the door behind him and wincing as the harsh movements jostled his pained body. He slowly made his way back to his bedroom, where he planned on screaming into a pillow or something. Suddenly, a large force knocked him to the floor, making Black Hat's body scream at him in renewed pain.

"Oh Blacky~ It's my birthday today, and you know what that means! It means you gotta give me a big ol' birthday ki- oh Blacky what happened to you? You look really pale." Great, Demencia. Literally the last person he needed to see right now.

"If you must know, I am in the middle of suffering through a miscarriage." Black Hat tried not to cry, and told himself that it was the sheer amount of physical pain he was in. Not because he actually wanted this baby or anything. However, he must have not been trying hard enough, because next thing he knew Demencia was hugging and shushing him, like he was some child in need of consolement.

"It's going to be ok. Just let it out, it'll make you feel better." Following Demencia's advice against his will, Black Hat felt the floodgates open. He stood there, embraced in the arms of an insane gecko, silently sobbing into her back. This lasted for quite a few minutes, and only when the tears finally slowed to a near stop did Demencia climb off of him. "Do you need help with anything?"

"No. Just leave me alone." Black Hat was exhausted and hurt, but he was fully prepared to trudge his way back to his room. But before he could get far, Demencia picked him up bridal style, holding him close to her chest.

"Nuh uh, no can do boss. You look like you could use a friend, so you can go and ask for something else."

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Two weeks. It had been two weeks since Black Hat found out that he was pregnant. His hand rested on his mockingly flat stomach, reminding him that it only been one week since he lost his child. He still felt weak and sick, but if it wasn't for the lingering pain Black Hat might have still likened it all to just some fever dream. He felt better than when it first happened, but Black Hat was still by no means ready to return to the daily grind.
There was a knock on the door and 5.0.5. entered the room carrying a tray with two steaming bowls of soup. Black Hat hadn't left his room all week, had hardly left his bed even, so the bear took it upon himself to provide food. Black Hat had a vague recollection of a video shoot having been scheduled a couple days ago, or perhaps just the day before. It didn't really matter, and Black Hat found he couldn't really care less about the shoot itself either.
"Baroo?" 5.0.5. placed the tray on the dresser.
"I told you, I'm fine." 5.0.5. slowly nodded in what the demon had thought had been understanding, but just as Black Hat thought he was about to leave, the bear instead pulled him along for a hug. Black Hat, being as achy as he was, leaned into the soft, comforting fur. For a while, that was all they did, until Black Hat finally found it within himself to push the living plush toy away. "Alright, that's enough now."
It wasn't until 5.0.5. left that Demencia woke up. Demencia hadn't left Black Hat's side ever since the incident. Not that Black Hat would ever tell her, but he was really grateful for this. Demencia had for the most part been sleeping in the armchair that she had moved to be right next to his bed. As soon as she woke up though, she grabbed the bowl of soup and demolished it's contents, spilling some of it on herself.
Black Hat ate his own soup at a much slower pace. Chicken and dumplings it seemed. As Black Hat slowly sipped at the broth from his spoon, he couldn't help but think about what he could have done differently. Black Hat rarely got sick and whenever he did he always went to whoever was his current scientist. But for some reason, when he was experiencing morning sickness he didn't.
If he had just gone to Flug sooner, they would have found out about his pregnancy earlier. Then they would have been able detect whatever problems he was having and they could have prevented his baby's death. He should have been more careful about controlling his emotions and not let himself get angry so much, or started on a healthy, nutrient filled diet or used his powers less or-
"Bombòn, you're doing it again. Come on, stop beating yourself up, there's nothing you could have done. You heard what the doc said." Demencia snapped him out from drowning in the dark pool of his own thoughts. Demencia had a point, Dr. Flug had told him that about one in every four pregnancies end in miscarriage, and usually because of a genetic defect. But while logically Black Hat knew it wasn't his fault, he still felt otherwise.
"So, what do you want to do today?" Demencia had been making sure Black Hat was well distracted throughout the week. Honestly, if it wasn't for her, Black Hat would have just spent the time wallowing in despair.
"How about the cartoon where everyone perishes?" Demencia grinned and she went to turn on the TV. She played with her phone a bit and suddenly the show was running on the TV. It was amazing how far humans had taken their technology. The morbid series continued its tragedies on screen, tragedies made hilarious under the guise of being all cutesy and happy. Even Black Hat couldn't help but laugh at the appropriate times.
"You know, I think you would have made a great dad." Demencia commented offhandedly as an adorable squirrel got decapitated in it's own car.
"Thanks." They continued to watch their show and everyone died in spectacular and gruesome ways, and Black Hat felt at peace for a bit. Perhaps everything would turn out alright.
Notes:
Not happy with how the ending came out, meh. Then again, I'm never happy with anything I write. Ever. I had to force myself to figure out how to end it at all though, otherwise I could have been rambling on for forever. Anyway please don't hate me for being terrible in this fic, I already do that enough as it is.
