Based on the original story, "The Love of Eros and Psyche", from Greek Mythology. Chapter Text

Sun

That's all he could see

This time of the year it's all anyone seemed to be talking about. How the sun burned through their pale skin or how it killed their crops. They never seemed to talk about how much they hated it enough. And Kageyama?

He was sick of it.

He was sick of how people always complained about things they couldn't change. Kunimi and Shirabu told him to get over this little pet peeve, for it only caused him trouble, but no matter how hard he tried he couldn't. And things he couldn't change bothered him.

Kageyama was currently lying out in the sun and looking up at it, he was blinded. He grunted as he tiredly moved his arm from his side up to cover his eyes as he slowly adjusted to the glare of the simmering star above him. While his eyes reset, his ears picked up the sound of the wind ruffling through the trees. Barely touching them in some kind of lovers caress. So soft and gentle that if you weren't completely silent, you'd miss it.

He basked in this soft, untouchable oasis of his for a while longer, daydreaming about how wonderful a nice cold glass of milk would be at the moment. Oh, yes, Milk. Probably the only thing Kageyama could trust 100% of the time. If there was a life where everything was made of milk, I'm sure he would of found it by now. Oh and how nice it would b-

"KAGEYAMA, GET YOUR LAME ASS UP!"

"FUCKING WHO?!", Kageyama shouted back as he flung up, nearly falling back over.

He blinked a few times to try and make out the cat-like figure glaring at him. After a while he could make out the mohawk on the top of the shorter male's head and realized who the bastard was.

"Oh, it's just Yamamoto."

"JUST YAMAMOTO! JUST-", Yamamoto sputtered with his face turning darker by the second, "YOU SHOULD RESPECT ME, I'M YOUR SENPAI!!"

Kageyama rolled his eyes. "Well, what do you want Yamamoto. I was busy.", he said glaring at the older male.

"WELLLLL, YOUR MOTHER TOLD KUNIMI TO COME GET YOU, BUTTTT BEING HIS LAZY ASS SELF HE DECIDED TO GET MEEEEE TO COME AND GET YOUUU TO TELLL YOUUUUUUU-"

"OH FOR THE LOVE OF ALL THINGS HOLY WHAT DOES THAT OLD HAG WANT!!!", Kageyama yelled, still salty about Yamamoto disturbing his peace.

"First of all, dude, that's rude don't call your beautiful mother that." Yamamoto stated, matter-of-factly, while crossing his arms and shaking his head in a disapproving manner. "And second of all, DID YOU FORGOT WHAT TODAY WAS YA DIPSHIT!"

"IT'S FORGET AND- what there was something today?" Kageyama said confused.

Yamamoto make a show of slapping his face and shaking it side to side in disappointment. He took a second but when he raised his head, his face had completely changed.

Kageyama knew that face. He saw it too much to ever forget it. He got it from his mother, his father, his aunt, his two brothers, his friends, the nice old lady that hosted a dairy booth at the market, Professor Osado, even Lev gave him that face and in Kageyama's point of view, it should have been the other way around.

Pity

Yamamoto looked at Kageyama with such sad eyes he almost cried. Spiritually. Kageyama doesn't cry. In public at least...

"Another suitor's comin' today that's what.", Yamamoto said, his shoulders deflating.

"ANOTHER ONE!?", Kageyama cried. Yamamoto winced at the outburst but met Kageyama's eyes nonetheless.

"Yeah, that's what I said,", Yamamoto spoke as Kageyama growled under his breath and glared at the direction his village was, "That's the fifth one this week. AND IT'S ONLY TUESDAY!"

As Yamamoto continued to yell outrages at the sky, Kageyama walked passed him, through the clearing, towards his village, fuming. Another suitor?! When will the ever stop pursuing him? He was only 17 years old, he was, practically, in his prime. Why would he want to get married now, when he had his whole life ahead of him? Plus, all the suitors saw him only as a pretty face. None of the suitors ever got to know him. Not like his friends did. They'd treat him to a few outings and only once he turned them down multiple times would they give him a second to breathe.

It was like this ever since his adolescence. It hit him like a Volleyball to the face and he suddenly became a magnet for handsome princes and dukes across the land. They'd travel all the way out to his village and make a huge show of proposing to him in front of the whole town, giving him the most extravagant gifts, and flirting with him at outings he was paid to go on. But he knew that all they wanted was a pretty face that they could fuck and call their own whenever they pleased. He just didn't know why it had to be HIM.

At this point he had made it into town and was now furiously walking through the marketplace to his house.

He walked passed the dairy woman, who's grey eyes smiled at him sweetly behind her glasses. They were close friends and he could almost call her his mother-figure by how many times she helped younger him find his way around the market when he was lost. He was even the ring bearer at her and her wife's wedding. Talking to her always seemed to calm him down and she was one of the only other things he trusted 100% of the time that wasn't some form of dairy. He doubled back and stared at her for a moment. He then decided that maybe a glass of milk was what he needed to cool down at the moment, emotionally and physically.

"Hello, Kiyoko-san.", Kageyama said as he turned and walked over to the older woman.

"Why hello to you too, Tobio-kun.", she said as she started looking through the boxes under her table.

"You don't happen to have a-"

"Bottle of cold Vanilla Milk?", she said smiling as she handed him one of said bottles.

"You know me all too well Kiyoko-san.", Kageyama said, smiling a bit too while carefully taking the milk from her delicate hands.

"Well you do come here every Tuesday Tobio, I remember my regulars.", she poked playfully.

"Hmmm, you get more regulars then me?", he joked back.

"Haha.", Kiyoko rolled her eyes while happily patting his arm. "See you next week Tobio-kun."

"Yeah, see you.", he said nodding as he backed away. "Tell Hitoka that I said hi."

"Will do.", she laughed as he turned around and continued walking through the marketplace.

It took him a little less than fifthteen minutes to navigate through the maze of unending booths, but he was stopping every now and again to stall his arrival. To tell the truth he was a little bit scared. The last three suitors were all very dominant and aggressive and not at all his type. Sure he didn't know what his type was at the moment but he was sure that it wasn't whatever they were.

As he tossed his now empty bottle of milk into the towns new garbage disposal system, he could feel a pair of eyes on him.

He turned around to face his house, but instead of being greeted by his mom's new door knocker, he met eyes with a slightly taller man. The first thing he noticed was his snake-like eyes. They seemed to look straight through him and he shivered at the thought. He noticed that the snake-like man had short eyebrows and thick, dark bangs that were swept neatly to the left side of his face. He was wearing a chiton that showed off his small yet muscular build and Kageyama would be lying if he said the man wasn't hella fine.

"Well, well, well,", the man cooed walking closer to Kageyama, "If it isn't the black-haired beauty that everyone seems to be gawking about."

"Who are you?", Kageyama spoke angrily.

"Suguru Daisho, Duke of Nohebi, but you can call me whatever you like.", Daisho said winking.

Nohebi? It didn't ring a bell for Kageyama so he decided that this 'Daisho' character wasn't very important.

"Are you the suitor?"

"Why beautiful, smart, and angry! Guess that checks off all my boxes.", Daisho said leaning closer to Kageyama's face. It was only now that he noticed how close the man had come and henceforth moved around him, walking towards his house.

The duke didn't seem to try and stop him, but when Kageyama turned around he noticed that he had been occupied staring at his ass.

"For your information," Kageyama spat, "I failed Mathematics." And with that, he opened the door to his house and closed it without turning back to tell the suitor goodbye.
