Chapter 1: Hop, Skip, and a Jump

Chapter Text

Rumi stood at the gates of U.A as the other applicants filed in around her, baring her teeth in a predatory grin so different from what her rabbit ears would imply. There wasn’t exactly a need for any type of internal monologue or hyping herself up, Rumi knew she would absolutely ace this exam. She was simply taking a moment to admire the view.

Satisfied with the moment, she started hopping forward in eager leaps and bounds. As she was coming up the steps, she accidentally ended up tripping up some green haired stick. She gave a glance back midair, noting that said stick was suddenly floating parallel to the stairs, a brown haired girl gripping his shoulder with a worried expression.

She huffed at that, stopping her bouncing as she walked through the main doors. What kind of hero has that bad of a situational awareness. Rumi is glad the exam was designed to get rid of the chaff like that loser. She really didn’t like the idea of spending any amount of time around someone like that.

Making her way to the seats before the presentation, an angry looking pomeranian of a blond shoved her out of the way. She growled at him. “How dare you.”

The blond stopped in his tracks, turning his head to look at her. “Tsch. Damn extras should know their place.”

Rumi rolled her shoulders, her spine cracking and popping audibly as she tilted her head side to side, bouncing on her toes. “I don’t think you want to mess with me, asshole. If I see you in the exam I’ll make sure to grind that stupid mug into the concrete.”

The blond sniffed loudly, before going to find a seat. “Whatever, Bunny Ears.”

As Rumi found her own seat, she couldn’t help but grin even more darkly. No one had tried to challenge her like that before, U.A was definitely the best choice. She looked forward to having a proper rivalry, someone to help push her beyond. Plus Ultra and all that shit.

The presentation was all stuff she had heard before, Rumi had made sure to reread the information on the exams at least 3 times over, making sure to get every last drop of information that she could use to her advantage. She was half tempted to just tune it out and do some light meditation before the exam, but there was this dude in the row behind her muttering up a storm. Rumi tilted one of her long ears towards the muttering, focusing on the voice’s surprisingly in depth breakdown of both the event and the hero that was presenting it. Sure, she had heard Present Mic’s radio show once or twice, but this kid must be some kind of hero fanatic to go this in depth into something that others would only pay half a mind to.

She would have to catch the guy’s name, hopefully they would end up in the same class. Analyst type heroes were rare but very useful.

A blue haired boy that seemed to be doing an awkward impression of ‘the robot’ stood up to tell off the muttering of the analyst behind her. The muttering cutting off with a little awkward squeak.

Rumi leaned forward, yelling back at the human robot. “Shut the fuck up, idiot! The dude is an analyst type. If you could actually hear what he was saying, you’d probably want to take notes. You should know better than to bully someone that clearly has severe anxiety. Besides, the fourth type of robot is the 0 Pointer. It’s just a distraction. Sit back down.”

Oh great, both arms were chopping up and down now, and the idiot was starting to go off about proper language in a school setting. He was completely ignoring her points, but go off dude I guess.

Present Mic ended up having to warn the idiot, she noted he was an Iida. Probably related to the pro hero Ingenium.

When they were moving off to their assigned testing areas, the guy that had been behind her ended up approaching her. Turns out he was the unaware boy from the stairs. Well, first impressions can be misleading.

The green haired boy blushed to the roots of his hair, bowing to her. “Th-thank you! N-no one’s ever defended me like that before. You didn’t have to lie about what I was saying though, I know it's just creepy garbage.”

Rumi laughed loudly, making everyone else nearby stare at the two. “Nice joke, dude! I’ve met people with analyst quirks that are worse than you.” She held out her hand. “Name’s Usagiyama Rumi, but all my friends call me Rumi!”

“N-nice to m-meet you Usagiyama. I’m Midoriya Izuku.”

Rumi clasped her arm around the guy’s shoulder, not caring at all that he seemed to almost jump out of his skin at the touch, somehow blushing even harder. “I look forward to working with you Izuku! Someone like you surely has something awesome planned to take down the robots right? You’re gonna rip apart their weak spots with an improvised weapon or what.”

It seemed like Izuku was about to answer, when he was interrupted by the voice of the Iida heir starting to yell at her. Honestly she turned him out completely, words going in one ear and out the other. She did however, heed the spirit of his message. There was no point in chatting right before the exam. She pulled away and started doing some light stretches, mostly on her legs. Rumi couldn’t help but smirk as she noticed out of the corner of her eye how the brown haired girl that had some kind of gravity quirk from earlier was staring at her ass, and most likely her small fluffy rabbit tail as well.

Sadly, it seemed the blond asshole wasn’t in her area. A shame really, it would have been easy to land on him by ‘accident’. When Present Mic yelled “START” she was the first to charge ahead with a fierce grin on her face, leaving everyone else behind.

Present Mic smiled at the initiative of the rabbit themed student. “Come on then, there are no countdowns in real life!”

The actual exam itself was a blur of exhilaration. One moment, kicking out the support of a wheeled robot, the next gripping onto a leg and using it as leverage to rip another robot in half. There was a purple haired guy she saw who was complaining about his quirk not working on robots. Her heart twanged for his plight, but really the info on the exam was available to anyone. If he didn’t have countermeasures for when his quirk wasn’t enough, he shouldn’t be in the hero course.

She made sure to flip off the Iida guy whenever she ran across him, laughing at his reaction every time.

Izuku only made an appearance once or twice. He seemed to be taking down some robots. Nowhere near as much as the ones with physical quirks, but he definitely was using that impressive brain of his to systematically rip apart any robot he could isolate. His only weapon being a knife-like scrap of metal that looked like it had come from a robot she had kicked into the pavement. She did notice that Izuku seemed to be bleeding from his hand as he held it, the kid definitely had balls of steel for that kind of thing.

There was a dude that looked like he was the height of a 6 year old, leaving a trail of sticky balls that stuck robots together. She stopped to flash him a smile and a thumbs up. She was about to say what a good job he was doing in the exam, when he revealed himself to be a pervert with a comment about her thighs. Rumi made sure to correct her mistake of encouraging the trash by punting the perv into a wall. She honestly didn’t care if she had points taken off for that, that kid should not be anywhere near a hero license.

Rumi was in the middle of helping the brown haired gravity user out of some rubble on her ankle when she felt the ground underneath her rumble and quake.

An absolutely gigantic robot burst out from between two buildings, rubble and dust flying everywhere. Rumi was about to simply grab the limping girl she helped and run away, when she saw the wall of the building they were next to start to collapse towards them. There was far too much rubble for her to simply jump with an extra person. There was only one thing she could do.

She threw the brown haired girl to the ground, and then stood over her. Rumi braced, gritting her teeth and her entire body coiled like a spring. The girl underneath her was somewhere between blushing madly and utterly terrified.

There was a massive crash as concrete and steel collided with the ground, in the last moment before the rubble filled her vision, she saw Izuku round a corner, green lightning sparking off his body.

God, that hurt like a total bitch. Rumi’s entire body felt bruised and abused from the sheer impact of the concrete. She had been forced to kneel like Atlas carrying the weight of the world, blood dripping from a head wound from where the slab overhead had cracked between her arms.

The only sounds she could hear was her own ragged breath and the deafening beating of her heart. She growled out. “Fuck, that machine is gonna run us over any minute.”

A sound that could have been mistaken as more rubble falling, but also had the unmistakable crunch of broken bones in it suddenly boomed out. Someone had just sacrificed their legs to jump towards them.

The girl underneath her was now solidly in ‘utterly terrified’ territory.

Rumi gasped in pain as the rubble shifted. “Gravity quirk?”

She seemed a bit confused for a second, before realisation hit and the brown haired girl twisted and sat up to tap the rubble with her hands.

The crushing weight of the rubble turned to nothing, and with a mighty roar Rumi threw it away, forcing her to blink at the sudden change in brightness.

The Zero Pointer was probably still there, it needed to be stopped before it ran over the injured gravity girl.

Rumi couldn’t help but be awed as she saw the figure of Izuku high above, driving his arm into the Zero Pointer with enough force to make the entire machine collapse backwards into a massive pile of scrap metal. Even with the pounding headache of what would probably become a concussion, Rumi knew that there was no way a guy with two broken legs and a broken arm could survive a fall from that height.

It would take proper timing, and a whole lot of control, but that’s nothing new when you are strong enough to leap over buildings or crush someone’s spine with a single kick.

Rumi was glad she wore her own usual workout clothes underneath the uniform, because there was no chance the inferior material could stand up to what she was about to do. The muscles in her legs bulged, straining against the seams of her pants as she carefully tensed her whole body, fingers now lightly touching the ground and ears twitching with every slight movement of the wind. Her eyes were razor focused on the falling figure. Just a little bit further, an inch too high or low and he could die.

NOW!

The material of her shorts and the soles of her shoes ripped apart, revealing her workout wear and her bare feet, the ground beneath her cracking into a crater as she shot like a bullet into the sky. She knew as soon as she left the ground she had timed it perfectly, in the same way you know if a basketball will hit the hoop the moment it leaves your fingers.

Green lightning crackled off of Izuku’s eyes as he turned in surprise to see his unexpected savior.

With a grace as smooth as a dancer, Rumi pulled the free falling boy into a bridal carry, both of them now plummeting towards the ground. Rumi let out a gleeful yelp at the sheer freedom that her quirk allowed, before stretching out her legs and cradling the back of Izuku’s head to prepare for the landing. This wasn’t exactly the first time she had carried someone while jumping, so she made sure to prevent any whiplash from the landing. The ground rapidly came up to meet her, and then the tendons in her legs suddenly snapped to full tension as her super-powered legs folded underneath her in a controlled fashion, finally leaving her crouched down with her bunny tail almost touching the ground and Izuku safely held in her arms.

Rumi carefully stretched back to full height, wincing at both her own pain and the sound of Izuku’s broken bones grinding together. She could feel the hot trickle of blood down her face speed up, heart pounding with so much adrenaline she could swear it was almost visibly pounding against her ribs. Rumi looked down at her passenger, and grinned with feral pride. “You needed some help?”

Izuku didn’t respond, simply staring back at her blankly as if the tanned bunny girl was the face of god. Yeah, that checked out. The dude was probably in shock from the pain.

She started to take a step out of the crater to go and get help, before the concussion came back with full force and her vision swam, the last thought crossing her mind before she collapsed bodily on top of the green haired hero was. “He’s kinda cute”
