“I… I could be Robin,” Tim suggested softly, almost not daring to say it, even when nobody alive could hear. “No one could ever replace you, but without Robin, I’m afraid of what Batman could become.”
He knew he would never measure up to Jason Todd or Dick Grayson. But anything was better than nothing, right? He was anything. Even if he was just a candle compared to the bonfires that were Dick and Jason, he could be that light to Batman's darkness. The light Batman so deeply needed.
He owed it to Robin, to Batman, to Gotham—to try.
There was that thumping again, and Tim reminded himself once more that it was probably just the rain, or something reasonable, and not the waking dead.
Too much AMC and George Romero, Tim. Pull yourself together.

Nearly every vigilante fucked up now and then.
Even somebody as competent as Oracle, Black Bat, or Nightwing.
So when Tim dropped the Robin and the Red Robin name and went about as Cardinal – The Detective, he was ready for failures and setbacks.
And his readiness for failure came from parts of his own stubbornness and experiences as Robin and Red Robin.
But to say he made a mistake somehow that led to this, that’d just piss him off.

Tim Drake finds himself at the hands of the Joker and has an electrifying experience.

There are two different versions of Tim’s dad. There is Tim’s dad, and Jack.
Tim’s dad asks him how his day was after school, Tim’s dad ruffles his hair and calls him ‘champ’ His dad lets him pick a movie for family movie night. Tim’s dad shakes his head with a fond smile when Tim plays his music too loud and doesn’t hear when he is called down. Tim’s dad is cool, and laughs a lot.
Jack is the opposite. Jack sucks.

The guy slashed his stick lightly against Tim’s shin after the whistle.

Summary
The first time Dick gives Tim a skateboard is right after his Redboard gets blown up. Okay “blown up” is an exaggeration but somehow Dick thinks that being shot at whilst chasing after a car that has your kidnapped friend (in civvies no less) on a skateboard isn’t any better.
It’s just an average skateboard– nothing that goes over 70mph because Dick actually wants his brother to stay alive regardless of the kid’s natural ability to have disaster finding him everywhere.
It’s not that Tim doesn’t have other skateboards (of course he does) but when Dick saw it in a shop window across the road from where he was working on a case, he couldn’t help but think of him– sue him for missing the kid.

The 2 times Dick gives Tim a skateboard and the 1 time Tim gives one back.

Tim was completely still, staring up at Dick with a kind of steely determination that was completely out of place on his young face. “You’re his brother. I thought that if there was anyone who loved him like that, it would be you.”
Dick tried to swallow, but his mouth and throat were completely dry. “It doesn’t matter,” he said hoarsely. “You can love someone to the stars and back, and it doesn’t mean you get to keep them.”
Love alone wasn’t enough, had never been enough, would never be enough. If it were, then Dick wouldn’t have had to be dragged away, kicking and screaming, from every great loss of his life. If it were, then all of Dick’s howling grief would have meant something.

There’s an entrance to the underworld beneath Gotham City. Tim is certain that the only way to stop Batman’s rampage is to give Bruce his son back. Dick just wants a second chance with his brother. It's an old song.

It’s fluff, man. It’s Dick bonding with Bruce, Bruce not seeing his relationship with Hal as it is, and Dick deciding to take matters into his own hands, with the help of all of their friends, to prove to Bruce the thing he didn’t even remember he was supposed to be looking for.
Bruce cranks out 50 squats with Dick sitting on his shoulders, for a bet. Dick looks contemplative.
“What’s on your mind, chum?”
“I was just thinking…” he sticks out his tongue from the corner of his mouth. “Would you tell me if you were dating someone?”
Bruce cocks his head. “‘Course, chum. Why?”
“Well, it’s just, I feel like you might not. But you know I’m old enough, right? You can tell me about that stuff, I won’t be like, weirded out, or anything.”
“I know that.”

Hands move to cradle his head and a body pushes against the side of the Medbay cot.
"Shh…" Dick whispers. He rests his chin upon Tim’s head, holding them together protectively. "You can cry. You can sleep."
And so he cries until exhaustion rules and he can’t keep the tears running any longer.
