Bucky thought of Stark offering him a private jet. Get there by Wednesday, he’d said. He’d still get there, even with a bit of a detour. He’d get there no problem. When had speed ever been an issue? He was Bucky fucking Barnes.
“I’m never in a rush,” he said, smiling widely. “South it is.”
The man offered him a hand to shake. “Good luck with the Chase, son.”
“Oh, I won’t need it,” said Bucky, “but thank you all the same.”*
Bucky Barnes is a NASCAR driver at the top of his game. He has a month to go before the chase for the championship, and when he's asked to do a sponsorship event halfway across the country, he figures he might as well drive there. He can count on himself to be fast. What he doesn't count on is a storm, a breakdown, and a friendly (and hunky..?) mechanic called Sam Wilson who repairs his car while he's stranded in a small town.

“Man, you are just… You know, I’ve heard stories,” said Sam, shaking his head minutely. “Sergeant James Barnes,” he continued, making his voice deep and deliberate, like he was announcing some kind of sports game. “I bet you caused quite a stir, back where you’re from.”
“I do well for myself,” said Bucky, a pleased flush on his cheeks.
“I’m sure you do.”
“And what about you?” he prompted. “Handsome guy like yourself. You probably hafta beat the ladies off with a stick.”
Sam’s smile didn’t fall, but it became a little smaller. He glanced at the shield propped up beside him; all red, white, and blue, stars and stripes. “I don’t really… I’ve got a lot going on,” he said.*
1943. Bucky Barnes has recently shipped out, when he suddenly finds himself transported to a future where his current best friend is gone, he is (somehow) still alive, and the handsome man who found him can't quite look at him without heartbreak in his eyes.
2028. Sam Wilson isn't talking to his best friend. And then a young, confused, annoyingly charming version of his best friend falls out of the damn sky. Great. Just great.Series

It happened so fast that Sam could barely register it. One second, he had Bucky pinned, the next, the roles were completely reversed. And now Bucky was on top of him, firm legs bracketing Sam’s own, and they were… close. So close that he could see each individual drop of Bucky’s sweat. A couple of strands of his long hair had come free from his hastily drawn ponytail, dangling towards Sam’s forehead. For some reason, Sam really wanted to push them out of the way. To tuck them behind his ear. To—
What the fuck am I thinking? He shook himself mentally.
Bucky was still avoiding his eyes. Instead, his gaze was fixed on – no. Was he – was he looking at Sam’s mouth?*
Sam doesn't know how to get along with Bucky Barnes. They only communicate through trash-talking, and what's more, Bucky won't even look at him, and he has no idea why. What, does he make the guy nervous, or something? Hehe. Heh... (Wait...)

Summary
“When’s the last time someone else stitched you up?” Bucky asked. He was still speaking in that breathy, low tone, like he was afraid something might shatter if he raised his voice.
“I don’t know,” admitted Sam. “Years, probably.”
His answer seemed to physically wound Bucky. For a moment, Sam was worried he might cry. Instead, he just lifted his left hand; touched a single finger to the side of the wound. Sam shivered from the cold touch of the metal.
“Is there anything else I can do?” Bucky said, watching the way Sam’s ribcage rose and fell with each breath. The question, for some reason, made Sam want to slam his head against a wall. He’d heard it often, but in all the wrong places. Never when he needed it. And never like this.

Sam and Bucky have this thing between them, and it keeps getting stronger, and something is bound to break. If only either of them could bring themselves to acknowledge it.
