Sometimes Dennis misses Broken Bow.
It’s not like he isn’t glad he got out. He had to. That was non-negotiable. But still, he tells himself, he’s allowed to miss it without regret. The two are not indivisible from each other.
Which is why, when his father calls him ten times in one night, Dennis almost picks up.

"How much do you know?"
"He's the youngest of three brothers, grew up religious and moved to Pittsburgh as soon as he turned 18" Robby answered, realising now that he knew far less about Dennis' upbringing than he thought he did. "Just tell me where he is?"
"It's really something you should talk to him about" Trinity still remembered the night when Dennis told her about everything that happened to him back in Broken Bow, how cruel his father was, the bullying he faced, that priest who got too touchy and Luke coming home that night with blood on his hands and one of their father's guns hidden under his shirt.
"Just- is he safe?" Robby enquired, his tone turning more pleading now, he had to know Whitaker was okay. The pause before Trinity's confirmation did not reassure him.

Summary
“Dennis, when I die—please don’t cut my hair.” Thomas Whitaker says brashly.
“You’re not gonna die.” Dennis stated quickly, his heart pounding. Their uncle Edward had passed in the springtime—the spring flowers rose as he drank himself to death. His father's brother—a twin of his own.
Twins are born together, but they do not leave this earth together. That path is walked alone, and Dennis is afraid that Thomas has already started his sprint towards death without him.
“Please don’t let them cut my hair. Please. It’s the only thing that’s truly mine, please don’t let them take it.”
“Okay, okay.” He doesn’t understand why it’s important to him—he doesn’t understand why Thomas is so concerned about his appearance when he can barely stand on his own two legs. It’s vain in a way they aren’t allowed to be.

Summary
She comes back inside to help him clear the table, and she notices that the crust from her plate is gone.
He ate her crust.
She looks at him—and he’s just clearing out the table like nothing. It’s fine. She was going to just toss it anyway. It’s not a big deal. But it’s just kind of weird.
Dennis has siblings—a handful of brothers—so he’s probably used to stealing their food. Sharing.
Trinity Santos didn’t grow up with siblings.
“Did you just eat my fucking crust, Huckleberry?”
