    This is a love letter to the all the millenials like me who played it too careful and forgot to enjoy our youth. Shane and Ilya, enjoy it for me, do good. Fuck it good, fuck it right. Life is too short to live it scared.

    The arena is too loud.
    That’s the first thing Shane notices; not the ice, not the lights, not the jersey on his shoulders that suddenly feels wrong in a way he can’t articulate. The sound hits him like pressure, like something physical, a wall of noise that vibrates in his chest.
    He’s already bent over for the faceoff when it hits him- skates set, stick down, weight forward. His body is exactly where it’s supposed to be even if his brain is still skidding uselessly, trying to catch traction.
    There’s only a split second before the puck drops.
    It stretches.
    He lifts his eyes.
    Ilya.
    Young. So fucking young. Is he dreaming? Not worn by years of hockey, travel, interviews and losses and victories that stack so high they blur together. He’s young again; sharp boned, bright eyed, unable to grow a beard to save his life. Bears black and gold instead of Centaurs red. 'If I look down am I going to be pantsless too?' He thought absently, no way this was real... right?

    Shane caught his eye, “I'm so sorry, you don't deserve this.”

    The words seem to catch Rozanov off guard. He simply nodded, looking down away from Shane.

    Shane was shaking with fury. No, this couldn't be how this happens. The first queer person in the NHL couldn't be outed, shamed and scared. Something shifted in Shane's mind, ever his mother’s son he began to plot.

    “Have you watched the full video? How clear is your face? Is there any denying it's you?” The questions fell out of his mouth.

    Ilya Rozanov and Shane Hollander famously hated each other, and for their entire careers they had floated in each other’s orbits. Constantly competing, chirping and, as much as they would both deny it, there was definitely some heated staring from afar.

    All that changes when Shane runs into Ilya on the roof of a club in Boston, with a cigarette in hand and a problem Shane was convinced he could fix.

    Or: What would've happened if Shane and Ilya never did the CCM photoshoot, becoming real rivals?

    When practice is done and he’s showered, he checks his phone.
    The 16 messages from Lily are expected with Ilya traveling to Detroit this week. Ilya has a strong but unsupported hatred of Detroit. The ‘vibes are bad Shane’ was the last claim Shane had heard and he is prepared to read even less substantiated claims.
    He’s unprepared to see a group chat he’s been added to.
    Shane is only a part of a few group chats. One that Rose put together with a bunch of her not out queer friends that he keeps muted but likes to scroll through every once in a while (they have good memes). The group chat with the whole team he only keeps up with for Captain Reasons but keeps it muted too. The one with both of his parents that his mom uses more often than her single thread with him cause ‘Your Dad deserves to be in the loop too’. And finally the one with Jackie and Hayden which is mostly him and Jackie bullying Hayden and Hayden being increasingly frustrated with their antics.
