Summary
In the year 277 AC, the Mad King's second son rides north.
Vaeron Targaryen is fifteen, a ward of Jon Arryn at the Eyrie, and the youngest of Lord Arryn's three wards when his father's capture at Duskendale shakes the realm. His mother the queen sends a raven to keep Vaeron out of the south, away from what is no doubt a brewing storm. Lord Arryn sends him north with Eddard Stark who carries a proposal of marriage between their friend and foster brother Robert Baratheon and his sister Lyanna to his father, Lord Rickard Stark.
When winter traps Vaeron in Winterfell for longer than he had anticipated, he returns home after reaching the age of majority to reunite with his family. What he finds is a Red Keep held hostage by a crazed monarch, a brother obsessed with prophecy, and the doom that the tensions of the realm could spell for his family.

Brynden Stark (16) is still a squire to Ser Arthur Dayne when he is caught in the middle of Rhaegar's rebellion to usurp his father Aerys II. He fights to find a side to fide for, struggling to balance honour, justice, and his oaths. On top of that, Ashara Dayne is gorgeous and Brynden knows it.
In the North the Others gather, and the prophecy of Azor Ahai crawls closer.

It felt as though the entirety of King’s Landing was travelling with them, though he knew there couldn’t have been more than two hundred, likely closer to one hundred. But even still, on that narrow offshoot of the Kingsroad, it seemed like the largest retinue to ever be issued to Brynden.
He was riding next to Ser Arthur Dayne, The Sword Of The Morning, whom he squired for. Ser Arthur was a member of the Kingsguard, and naturally travelling very close to Prince Rhaegar and Princess Daenys, who were also on horseback. -

Daenerys and Viserys remain in the west, where they might help the Baratheon and Targaryen alliance flourish.

Alys Brightflame is Aerion Targaryen’s descendant, a bastard of Aerys II, and a liability the realm has no safe way to acknowledge. Raised in Lys and kept far from court, she crosses the narrow sea with a sealed letter, a hidden name, and a dragon’s egg no one meant her to find.
She does not want the Iron Throne. Prophecy interests her less than staying alive, and survival has already taught her to look for a place no one can easily take from her. That does not stop other people from finding signs in what she survives, what she carries, and what she refuses to explain.
