Chapter Text
It was sometime after nine that Haruka packed up the car seat and got his daughter ready for the big day ahead of them. Makoto had gotten up early to take the boys to school and promised to be back to take them shopping. Kotone was cooing softly to herself having just finished a bottle. Haruka smiled at her as he gently buckled her into her car seat.
"We're gonna go shopping today sweetheart," he told her lowly, "Makoto is going to help daddy pick out everything you need."
He heard his phone vibrate on the table and hurried to answer it, Chika bounding across the room to wrap back and forth around his legs.
"Hello?" he asked, while tuning his head to make sure his cats food dish was full, noticing you could see the bottom ever so slightly.
"Hey hun, I'm in the car out front. " Makoto's voice though the phone tinged with static. "Do you need help carrying anything?"
"Makoto..." Haruka said as he crossed the room to the large window, he looked out and saw a nice suv still running. "You didn't have to rent a car..."
"Don't worry about it." Makoto said, "I borrowed it from your dad."
"Really?" Haruka smiled, "...we should tell him about Kotone."
"I thought we could do that together maybe?" Makoto chuckled sweetly.
Haruka took a deep breath. "I would like that."
"See you when you come down." Makoto whispered, his low loving voice reminding Haruka of being wrapped up in his boyfriends arms, warm under the covers and feeling more safe then he ever has.
"Okay." Haruka ended the call because more then anything he wanted to be next to Makoto. He stuffed his phone away and peeked at Kotone in her car seat before moving to the kitchen and filling Chika's bowl for her. He pick up the car seat with his cooing child and checked he had his keys, before calling a goodbye to his cat companion.
The hall ways and stairs where empty as he carefully made his way down to the lobby. When he stepped outside he breathed in sharply, seeing his own breath on the cold air. He was glad he had worn a hoodie and knew he would have to pick out warm clothes for Kotone on this shopping trip. Makoto got out of the front seat and met him on the other side of the car. His smile was so affectionate that Haruka could feel warmth tingling though him all the way to his finger tips.
"You you know how to strap in the car seat?" Makoto asked him, his words blowing out of his mouth in a white cloud of cold air. Haruka couldn't help smiling, staring at the taller man with his head tilted up. Makoto leaned forward with a chuckle, pressing a slow kiss to his parted lips lingering comfortably in each others personal space. Haruka had never felt this way in any of his previous relationships, everything about Makoto felt right and wonderful. He ducked his head a little when Makoto pulled away, feeling a pleasant warmth to his face.
"Can...you show me?" Haruka asked, glancing up at his boyfriends startling green eyes. "How to put in the car seat I mean."
Makoto openly laughed, lacing his fingers with Haruka free hand. "I would love to..."
His boyfriend gently lead them to the car and opened the back seat door for Haruka. Then he went around to the other side and crawled into the back seat to give Haruka a better view of what he was doing. Haruka carefully place the car seat with his sweet girl into the car, Makoto showed him how to pull the seat belt to safely hold it into place. Kotone started crying loudly as they worked, making her fathers heart pang.
"It's okay sweet heart," Haruka whispered to her.
"Almost done, love." Makoto told her, clicking the belt in place and turning to Haruka. "I know it's awful to hear her cry but she should calm down once the car starts moving."
Frowning Haruka nodded pressing a light kiss to Kotone's head but she still wailed. Makoto slipped out of the backseat closing the door and getting into the drivers seat. With a heavy heart Haruka closed the door and slipped into the passengers side. He trusted what Makoto said, buckling himself in he sighed though. Makoto took his hand and squeezing it reassuringly before starting the car and pulling away from the building.
"So I was thinking I could take you to the mall." Makoto was saying as he made his way though town and deeper into the city. Kotone's crying had lightened to soft sniffles before stopping all together. Haruka relaxed and peeked back at her, she seemed very interested in the fast changing colors outside the window.
"That sounds good." Haruka said, "Rin sent me a text and told me I would have to get more diapers and blankets for sure."
"Kotone...." Makoto started, his hand going to rub the back of his neck. "I...mean my wife..."
"It's fine Makoto." Haruka told him, "I wouldn't have named our daughter Kotone if talking about her name sake made me uncomfortable."
Makoto smiled his hand returning to the wheel with the other. They drove in silents for a moment before his boyfriend glanced at him and back to the road before him.
"Thanks Haru..." he said. "...I can't even begin to express how happy...you make me feel."
Haruka turned to stare out the window. "....me either, Mako."
Makoto pulled into a large parking lot after diving for about fifteen minutes, the radio volume low, he found a good parking spot and turned off the car. Haruka moved to look at the man before him, he doesn't think he's ever smiled this much.
"I like to look at you when I talk..." Makoto told him, a light color making it to his cheeks. Haruka held out his hand and his boyfriend happily took it, lacing their fingers together. "So...I remembered that Kotone had a small baby shower before the twins where born."
"Oh, I feel like I've heard other people talk about baby showers." Haruka nodded. "probably from Aii honestly, but they didn't have one because of how up and down the process of adopting was."
"The baby shower was super helpful honestly," Makoto said, "I only knew how to take care of them from having my siblings a reading some of the parenting books that Kotone had bought."
Haruka was silent for a moment, feeling like Makoto had more to say.
"Honestly...I was a wreck when I brought them home...." Makoto admitted, "losing Kotone didn't seem real, but thankfully I already had everything I need for the boys at home and my mother also was a big help."
Haruka tightened his grip on their hands, leaning forward to reset his head on Makoto's shoulder nuzzling as close as the small car space allowed.
"I love you." Haruka whispered, it's all he could feel and all he wanted to say. He could imagine Makoto sleep deprived and taking care of his boys.
"I love you too." Makoto kissed the top of his head.
"We should go inside..." Haruka sighed, enjoying being pressed up into his boyfriends side. "can we snuggle later?"
"I would like that." Makoto nodded as they pulled apart.
