Chapter Text
Wednesday clung to Enid tightly, as if to assure herself this was truly her reality. Rightfully exhausted after the night’s events, she went slack in Enid’s touch, the blonde immediately shifting to hold her steady. But not before Yoko offered up her coat, quickly taking a step back as her intrusion was met with a low growling from Enid. Divina did the same, though straying further back, placing the jacket on Enid’s shoulders.
Taking the, thankfully black, jacket Wednesday pulled it over her shoulders, slumping further into her wolf’s hold, limbs aching in an unpleasant manner she was unused to. Her lack of argument, reminding them all of the dire situation not long ago. Wednesday tucked her nose into Enid’s pulse point, muscles unwinding as the events washed over her. She felt Enid’s bare arms wrap around her shoulders, fingers trailing
Unsure how long they remained in the position, Enid engaged in quiet musings with the leech, Wednesday’s entire focus drawn to picking apart the smells combined in Enid’s scent. If having to adjust to her Lycanthrope senses was painstakingly slow before, Wednesday wasn’t prepared for the longevity of it now. Enid’s smell of sugary sweets and… something new Wednesday hadn’t noticed before. Intrigued, she tucked her nose farther, not that there was much room to do so, reveling in the shiver it elicited. And the smell of water lilies. Specifically Nymphaea odorata. While she didn’t pertain the expertise as her mother, Wednesday was well versed in the species. How interesting, a change to certainly dwell on later.
Wednesday pulled back, ears twitching as the snapping of twigs approached. Enid’s hand’s flexed on her back, eyes shining with a ring of gold before relaxing. Bianca shuffled out between the bushes, hand held to the back of her head.
“Fucker got me from behind.” The siren grumbled, looked around, noting the surprised looks on their faces, eyes drifting to the gorgon lying still in a pool of his own blood. She let out a groan, head falling back. “Don’t tell me you had all the fun without me, Addams!”
Yoko let out a quiet chuckle, the sound encouraging the others to follow along, relief flooding each of their veins, drawing the same conclusion. With the threat disposed of at last they could return to full time students enrolled in the academy before their lives were once more uprooted in an uncertain amount of time.
___
They somehow made it back to the dorm without collapsing from exhaustion. The dorm mother tried to stop them, but one look at them and she immediately waved them off, ghostly pale as she slinked away.
Enid set Wednesday down on the closed toilet lid, digging through the cabinets. Wednesday watched her silently, cool porcelain offsetting pleasantly against her warm skin. Enid brought over their first aid supplies, setting them on the counter, wrinkle forming between her eyes as she ran a rag under warm water. Wednesday caught a glimpse of her wrist, skin red with iteration and burn marks scattered all across the smooth flesh.
Wednesday felt a tug on her heart, hating the clear torture her wolf had been through, simultaneously wishing she’d gotten the chance to kill the gorgon when she had the chance. Enid winced, the lukewarm water catching against her raw skin. The sound reminding Wednesday it didn’t matter anymore, none of it would, now that Enid was alright.
Gently, she took the cloth from Enid in one hand, the other pulling the blonde to stand in front of her again. Enid’s blue eyes brimming with unease as she repeatedly checked Wednesday for injuries.
“Allow me,” Wednesday murmured, dabbing the cloth lightly over Enid’s inflamed wrists. Enid’s face scrunched in pain, the only indication the wounds were still fresh. Any other injury and it would’ve long healed by now, but the prolonged exposure had taken its toll on her advanced ability. After effectively cleaning her wrists, then going over it a second time with antiseptic, Wednesday tossed the rag in the sink, moving to stand.
Enid, having remained quiet through the entire ordeal, rushed to help, hands falling to her waist and pulling Wednesday to her feet. Wednesday motioned towards the shower, grateful when the blonde caught on. She helped Wednesday over, bracing her back against the wall, hands still braced on either side of the raven. Wednesday carefully removed the borrowed jacket, other than the excessive blood coating her front, she had no injuries other than the soreness of her joints, taking a step forward.
Enid bit her lip, color dusting over her cheeks, eyes glued on the shower fixture. “We should probably talk.”
Wednesday hummed thoughtfully, gathering her shower soaps from their designated shelf. She’d never cared about being nude, though she preferred the comfort of full courage to provide the fullest protection against her enemies. Wolfing out only seemed to reinforce that. Wolves were no strangers to showing their barest self amongst others, as who better to trust with such a vulnerability than pack mates, and what was Enid if not someone to share that with? Though Enid’s reaction was certainly amusing. Given her own disregard on the subject, having removed many articles of clothing before entering her closet in the past.
“About the events that transpired tonight, or our new progression of shared physical engagement?” Wednesday said, lip twitching in a small smirk as Enid’s blush worsened, spreading down her neck. Wednesday wondered how far it would go.
Enid groaned, head falling back against the tile, clearly embarrassed, and yet her hands remained braced on Wednesday’s hips. “Both, but definitely the second.” Enid nodded readily, reaching forward, hands with the knobs of the shower so Wednesday wouldn’t have to. The shower head spurted, jets pulsing with a steady stream.
Wednesday relished in the biting cold against her scorching skin, though warming the temperature to one Enid much more preferred. Although the blood covering her body was far from unfamiliar, having hardened and starting to flake the feeling was growing unbearable. She let the water fall over her skin, chipping away at the red layer. After washing most of it away, Wednesday craned her head, meeting Enid’s gaze until the wolf looked away. Wednesday chuckled lowly, deciding to have mercy on the other girl. With a small step out of Enid’s grasp, enjoying the sensation of hands tensing on her waist should she dare step too far, Wednesday turned around, giving Enid a firm look.
“I suppose it would be best we talk about the horrors of tonight before breaching the topic of us?”
“Us?” Enid squeaked, a hint of hopefulness filling her words.
Wednesday rolled her eyes. “Have I not already made my feelings for you clear?” Enid’s eyes bounced between her own, vulnerability shining in the depths she’d been enraptured by. Wednesday let out a small breath. “Enid Sinclair, you have captured and ensnared my cold dead heart in a way I never believed possible. From the moment I entered the room, there was no preventing the ways in which I would be unequivocally yours.”
“Wends,” Enid gasped, eyes wide as her fingers traced light shapes on her sides. “God, you have no idea how long-”
Wednesday pressed a hand to her lips, giving Enid an unwavering look. “Whatever your answer may be, I wish to discuss the former so it no longer trails after us like dead weight.”
Enid let out an annoyed huff, but didn’t object. Wednesday waited patiently, noting the furrow of the blonde’s brows, the air of unease stirring around them.
“I killed Xavier,” Enid whispered hesitantly, as if the answer would scare Wednesday away. She turned her head in shame, tears gathering in the corners of her eyes. Wednesday gripped her chin, guiding her wolf to look at her.
“You did what you thought best in the moment. He was far from an innocent party and after all he has done to you, I would’ve done far worse.” Wednesday growled, rattling in her chest. Enid brought their front’s together, ignoring the water running down her back, effectively soaking clothes and buried her nose in Wednesday’s hair. The sound stuttered out into a less ferocious sound. Almost like a purr? No, that would be ridiculous.
“He threatened you,” Enid whispered into her hair.
“I never would doubt your judgment mi corazon. (my heart) Whatever the reason was regardless, you would never be to blame. I’ll make sure of that.” Wednesday made a note to alert her parents, not that Enid would need the extra protection, given she had done nothing wrong in the first place.
Quickly finishing up their shower, Enid bashfully abandoned the clothing hardly covering past the tops of her thighs and partook in the bathing ritual. They changed into their sleepwear, not without Enid sending her nervous glances from her vibrant side of the dorm. Enid was reluctant to be even across the room, one which Wednesday could understand as she hurriedly dressed, feeling the urge to eradicate the minimal separation between them. It took one shared look for Wednesday to know neither would be sleeping alone tonight. Enid pressed back against her side, leading them to the monochromatic side. Wednesday sat first, crossing her legs, hands stiffly in her lap. Enid did the same, head resting on her shoulder. Wednesday carded a hand through the damp blonde hair, eyes narrowing as she felt the jagged ends significantly shortened.
“Xavier’s handiwork.” Enid chuckled bleakly, pressing further into her side.
“If he weren’t already dead I would ensure he never maintained the ability to harm you ever again,” Wednesday said gravely, wolf huffing in agreement. It was the first time since everything she’d felt its familiar presence, though far more diminished than ever before. No longer did it fight to break free, to claw its way to the surface. No, it was far more subdued, less of a hindrance and more complacent, content to work with than against her. Wednesday could feel the same change within herself. Only now did she realize she could recall her one sided fight with the gorgon with perfect clarity. Though the initial shift remained the slightest bit foggy, it was already levels better than not remembering at all. Wednesday felt around the inside of her mouth, already catching the new sharpness of her fangs.
“Wednesday I,” Enid hesitated, hands tracing random shapes on Wednesday’s lap. “I should’ve been honest with you earlier, when you asked about my mate.” Enid took in a shaky breath, hands slipping into her own. “It’s you. It’s always been you from the day we met. I know it’s a lot since, you know, mates are kinda tied for life and all… so I get it if it’s too much.”
Wednesday shoulders fell she wasn’t aware had tensed. Though she’d been rather composed externally, there was no diminishing the fear the false texts from Enid’s phone held a modicum of truth within the blonde. “Nonsense. I meant what I said. My family is not unfamiliar with such lofty promises. Like wolves, we seek out a singular partner, our other half, trailing back centuries. I am far from the greatest at making sense of my emotions but it is undeniable the way I wish to remain by your side for as long as you’ll have me.”
Enid craned her head up. “Yeah?” Wednesday nodded. “So does this mean we’re dating.”
Wednesday huffed, what was it with their peers and such plain labels. “If you would prefer such a simple term, though it does absolutely nothing to verbalize the depth of our courtship. It will do, for now.”
Enid giggled quietly, dragging her cheek up and down Wednesday’s neck and shoulder with enough force Wednesday let herself drop back against the pillow. Enid let out a pleased trill, sliding on top of her and wrapping a hand around her waist. Wednesday tensed at first, before going lax against the mattress. Months ago, she would be revolted by such contact, but Enid’s weight pressed against her made for a terrific blanket. Enid tucked her nose back into her neck, her soft snores filling the room. Wednesday idly trailed her hand down her back, letting sleep pull her under for the first time in days.
1 Month Later
Enid ignored her rowdy brothers, firmly closing her door, letting out a sigh of relief as the noise faded. She launched herself down on her bed, swiping through her notifications, and let out another sigh, seeing no new messages. Rolling over to her back, Enid swiped to the home screen, a genuine smile filling her lips as her background stared back at her. Before heading home for break, not only did Wednesday hug her, okay technically Enid initiated it, but in her own way, the raven gave her another heart wrenching goodbye. Almost rivaling the first. Enid could do nothing but stand there, completely red in the face, heart stammering in her chest and listen, absolutely enthralled by the words. Enid felt like she could burst by the time Wednesday finished, immediately gathering her mate in her arms and kissed her until they were breathless, because that was like a thing they did now!
After pulling away, Enid was greeted with Wednesday looking away bashfully, a splash of color dusting her pale cheeks. Enid couldn’t not snap a picture, so, smushing their cheeks together, she quickly held out her phone and was gone before Wednesday managed to recover. Much to the gloomy girl’s displeasure, though she didn’t argue, so Enid took it as a win.
As much as it killed Enid to be apart so soon after everything, April break came around faster than she would’ve liked. Just when they’d started to fall into a new routine, it was stripped right away from her. It was only a week, but Enid was already struggling and only a day had passed since she’d last seen her girlfriend- the word still making her want to let out happy squeals and kick her feet in the air- and Enid was itching to get back to Nevermore. The upcoming full moon at the end of the week certainly wasn’t helping matters either.
After that night, really, how many more of those would they have before graduating? It didn’t end there. Police swarmed the campus for almost a week after, whispers filling the halls as people speculated on what was going on. Galpin was the one to take their statements, thankfully not asking the details about Xavier, giving Enid pitying glances the whole time impossible to miss. During the whole questioning, Enid squeezed Wednesday’s hand so hard, if Wednesday wasn’t a wolf, it would’ve long broken.
It wasn’t that Enid felt guilty for killing Xavier, never with the way he threatened Wednesday, but killing someone. In her short time of being able to shift, she’d gone hunting plenty of times, but it never weighed on her conscience the way Xavier did. It scared Enid, the way she’d done it without much thought, without remorse. How far would she go for Wednesday? All it took was one look for Enid to know the answer. Anything. Xavier’s words stuck to her mind like a parasite, unnerving her.
Somehow, despite it all, Ajax made it through the night, having been rushed to the hospital before being shipped off somewhere. Wednesday tried to find out of course, getting dismissed every time from the sheriff, claiming it was better they didn’t know. Enid, on the other hand, was just glad not to have to see him again.
Things happened to finally calm down enough, returning to some form of half normally. Enid didn’t want to say their dynamic changed, because it had already done so a gracious amount during the winter months. No, it was different this time. Like each new piece between them they explored finally found its home, completing the puzzle neither had even noticed to begin with. Nothing really changed within their dynamic, but things definitely felt more… intense. With their feelings out in the open to the other, Enid moved lighter around the other girl, no longer feeling like any moment the unresolved tension between them would break her.
Now, Enid never needed to force down her feelings, pull back from reaching out for Wednesday, instead she could do the opposite. If they were inseparable before, Enid didn’t know what to call it now. As they both had dreaded the term coming to an end, they tried to squeeze every ounce of awake, and sleep, together before the inevitable split.
Principal Buckley had been gracious, only after he saw the negative attraction the pair brought with them everywhere, excused them from most of their classes. The ongoing investigation on campus only serving as another reason for them to stay close to the dorm, because someone had to be blamed for the events of it all. Enid bounced her time between Wednesday and her friends. As of late, however, Wednesday joined her now, much less hesitant than before to be around the other nightshades. The times they were alone, they’d taken to spending hours cuddled together, whether that be in one of their own beds, where they’d inevitably fall asleep, or any comfortable surface in their dorm. Wednesday grumbled at first when Enid dared to interrupt her sacred writing time, sliding into her lap, but adjusted without issue, moving her hands around her back, continuing to type. If Enid had a tail then, it would’ve wagged furiously. She was just glad Wednesday was so recipient of the onslaught of affection, even daring to initiate some herself.
Enid sighed, absentmindedly checking her phone once more to a blank screen. She tossed it aside, gazing longingly out the window. Only six more days and they would be together again.
_____
Wednesday’s fingers flew swiftly over the keys of her typewriter, eyes shifting back and forth as she observed the fresh ink pressed to the page.
Viper was currently entirely covered in dirt, from her face, down to her hands, and all over her clothes. She let out a frustrated huff, leaning against her shovel, glaring down at the half dug hole.
“Your assistance would most certainly speed things up.” She called into the distance, relaxing as a familiar set of hands wrapped around her shoulders.
“Where’s the fun in that? Besides, I like watching you work. It never ceases to amaze me.” The person giggled, claws tracing a path over Viper’s shoulders.
At the turn of her doorknob, Wednesday quickly tore the paper from the carriage, placing it face-down with the others to be finished later, forcing away the blood rushing to her cheeks. As of late, it was impossible to deny the influence her courtship with Enid had over her novel. The door burst open, revealing none other than her insipid brothers. Pubert shot over, clambering into Wednesday’s lap before she could object. Pugsley wisely kept his distance, eyes trailing over her bedside.
“Don’t,” Wednesday hissed, catching the mischievous glint in Pugsley’s eyes. She braced a hand on Pubert’s back, keeping the younger boy from squirming too much. Pugsley smirked, hands clenched behind his back. Wednesday narrowed her eyes, threat on the tip of her tongue. It was long overdue she hung her meddlesome brother by his ankles, perhaps then a modicum of sensible thinking would hit him, the call for lunch was his only saving grace.
Wednesday glowered at Pugsley, unwilling to let him out of her sight, until Pubert tugged her jacket, demanding her attention. “Wendy, I wish to acquire sustance.”
“Sustenance.” Wednesday corrected, rolling her eyes as she moved to stand. She shifted a blade between her hands, lodging it between Pugsley’s fingers, smirking proudly at the yelp it elicited, as she exited her room.
The meal was its usual grand affair, platters filling the table from end to end. Her parents, already seated, were wrapped in each other as usual, her father fretting over Morticia’s whim. If it weren’t for Pubert clinging to her as though a lifeline, Wednesday would return to her place of solitude. She was in no mood to entertain their egregious displays of affection, even less so in the absence of her own paramour. She set Pubert down, besides her mother, taking her usual spot opposite Pugsley
Morticia patted Gomez’s hand, turning both their attention to their lone daughter. “Ah, my darling sabuesa (hound) Enlighten us! How was the conclusion of your schooling?”
Wednesday looked down into her food, taking a marginal bite as she figured how best to sum up the last weeks without giving much detail away. “Adequate and abrupt as the last. Though this time only the death of one most deserving.”
Morticia smiled knowingly, leaving Wednesday slighted as she stiffened, focusing on her meal. “All is well with your delightful paramour, then?” Morticia asked in an annoyingly pleased tone, fooling no one.
“Enid is fine.” Wednesday said flatly, rather wishing not to engage in this conversation. Just uttering the name of her love caused a gracious uptick of her heartbeat. It was quite ridiculous really, they’d been apart more than a day, and yet she found it nearly impossible to not notice the great absence of the blonde.
Gomez gasped, bringing his hands together. “Our storm-cloud has finally taken to the family curse and you haven’t brought her with you?”
Wednesday’s brows pinched low on her head. She let out a deep sigh of vexation before answering, “Enid has her own family to return to father. You know that.”
Gomez let out another horrified gasp, stopping all motion at the table, her brothers watching wide eyed beneath the patriarch and the heiress. “I’m aghast at such lack of persuasion! I have always taught you the best in regards of how to look after your intended.” Gomez whipped out a handkerchief, blowing his nose obnoxiously. “You put your mother and I to great shame!” He cried out, waving the cloth around exasperatedly.
Wednesday growled, rubbing a hand over her forehead as she tried to tune out Gomez’s over dramatic display. Pubert had been reabsorbed into his meal, no longer paying attention, while Pugsley covered his snickers behind his hand, jumping when Wednesday kicked him hard in the shin. The steel toe of her boot, going to leave a decent bruise.
“Darling,” Morticia braced her hands over her husbands, urging them back down, trying to calm him. “I believe our daughter had good reason why Enid did not come alongside her.” She whispered a few words in French to him, Wednesday eliciting to tune out in favor of not losing what little meal she garnered to eat.
Having had more than enough of her family’s antics for the day, Wednesday pushed away from the table, offering a curt nod to her mother, and retreated up to her room. Almost as though sensing her current turmoil, Wednesday’s phone dinged from its place on her bedside table. She picked it up, bats swarming in her stomach at a certain contact name.
Enid:
i miss you 😢💔
Me:
I find myself longing for your presence as well.
Enid:
wends?!
wtf?
Me:
I was under the assumption given our courtship, sentiments such as that were appreciated. I apologize if I made you uncomfortable.
Incoming call: Enid
Wednesday of course, picked up immediately. The screen brightened, revealing her beautiful wolf in all her glory.
“Wends, you can’t just say romantic shit like that and expect me not to go insane! If you were here, I’d kiss you right now.” Enid breathed out, her nervous energy palpable through the screen. Wednesday’s eyes blew wide, darting away from the screen as she struggled to right her breathing. Kissing was nothing new to either of them now, and yet Wednesday couldn’t help the flood of emotion filling her veins whenever they did.
“I suppose the sentiment was a welcome one then,” Wednesday fought to keep her voice level, despite the persistent flush of color on her cheeks.
“Very. God, I don’t know how Yoko and Divina do it. I don’t know if I’ll make it a week to see you again.”
Wednesday tilted her head, a thought forming in her mind. Perhaps if Enid couldn’t come to her, she could go there. She planned to propose the idea when footsteps rapidly approaching her door alerted her of the dwindling time she had to speak with the wolf. Wednesday mentally sighed, far from ready to depart electronically with her paramour. “You are not alone in the sentiment. I detest having to cut our call short, but I’m afraid I’m about to be dragged off for more familial interactions for the day.”
Enid pouted, but nodded in understanding. Wednesday felt something sharp dig into her chest, hating to disappoint her beloved, and secretly promising to talk with her parents at the soonest convenience. “Call me before bed?” Enid asked, blue eyes nervously bouncing between her own.
“Of course. My time or yours?”
Enid rolled her eyes. “I’m not gonna ask you to stay up until three in the morning.”
“All you would have to do is say the words and I would.” Wednesday answered earnestly.
Enid blushed, now it was her turn for her gaze to wander away from the screen. “You’re too charming, Wednesday Addams.”
Wednesday cleared her throat, the way Enid managed to render her speechless would never cease to grow old. “I must really go now. I will dial you back later tonight.” Another minute later, Wednesday departed her cellular device back to its place, brushing her attire as if to clear away the overwhelming longing she held for her wolf.
___
The sound of her phone ringing across the room drew Wednesday’s attention away from her latest page. Despite her wishes, she hadn’t found the time to pull her parents aside to make them aware of her plans, dragged into several affairs with her brothers away from the manor.
Having finally returned to the solitude of her room, hoping to seek out her parents, only to be alerted by Lurch they were out on one of their day excursions in New York. Wednesday shuttered, appalled at the mere thought of taking the subway in order to track them down. Waiting would have to do.
She rose from her desk, away from the ever growing stack of papers beside her typewriter, a pitiful attempt to distract herself from the maddening pull urging her to return to Enid’s side. Wednesday scowled, having forgotten Enid was no longer her only contact stored away.
Incoming call: Yoko
“Tanaka. I suggest you make this quick. I have far pressing matters to attend to then entertaining you.” Wednesday said harshly, eyes flicking back to the page in progress. Viper and the blonde- she lacked a more elegant name at the moment- had narrowly escaped the confines of a collapsing mine.
Yoko’s cool voice fell down the line. “Nice to hear you too, Addams.” Wednesday waited for Yoko to say more. Yoko cleared her throat, continuing on. “It’s about Enid actually I think-”
Wednesday’s grip tightened around the device. “What happened? Is she alright?”
Yoko sighed. “If you had just let me finish, I was getting to that.”
“Spit it out leech, I’m in no mood for your games.”
“Fuck, geez okay! Nothing’s wrong physically. I think though you two shouldn’t be apart much longer. I know wolf separation anxiety is no joke, but it’s much more intense with Enid. You’ve felt it too, right?”
Wednesday swallowed thickly, her own thoughts having run ramped over the last few days. The pull had only grown more intense, feeling the desperation pulling from her wolf urging her out west. “Perhaps. I have plans to rectify the situation.”
“Good,” Yoko affirmed, “Because I already told her I was flying out and you’re coming with me. Your private jet or mine?”
___
Wednesday dug her nails into the black armrest of her seat. Oh, how she hated flying more than necessary. After a tortuous six hour flight, she couldn’t have enjoyed being back on solid ground.
Yoko chuckled, sliding next to her. “Relax, it wasn’t that bad. And I’ve lived through the invention of planes.”
“I’m fine,” Wednesday spoke with clenched teeth, trying to ignore her stomach resettling itself. Upon landing, a car had waited for them right outside the airport. The maneuvering of the bustling airport had been tedious at best, the chaos giving her an absolutely revolting headache. It had been all too necessary when the door firmly closed, snuffing out the dreadful noise. Wednesday kept her sight on the skyline, watching the city give way to suburban neighborhoods. When all but a few scattered houses every few miles filled the window, Wednesday took a daring glance at her reluctant compatriot. “Where’s your better half?” She found herself asking, unable to recall the last time the two had been apart.
“Divina’s parents took them out of the country for some ‘family bonding’ in the Swiss Alps. Her family isn’t all that big on…” Yoko waved her hand around aimlessly.
Wednesday frowned, was she implying Divina’s family didn’t reciprocate their relationship well? “Same-sex relationships?”
Yoko snorted, flashing Wednesday a sharp smile. “No, actually, the opposite. I meant me dating their baby cousin. I went to school with some of her relatives so it’s kinda awkward, you know. Me technically being the same age as them.” Yoko shrugged, turning her eyes out the window. “But that’s just how it is.”
Wednesday did, in fact, not know. Though she hardly understood why something like that mattered. After all, it was a known fact sirens contained the longest natural lifespan, some of the oldest records stating them with the capability of living for thousands of years, therefore making the family's reasoning illogical. Perhaps there was more to it? Wednesday didn’t offer that thought, letting the silence return.
She let her mind flip to Enid, imagining the blonde’s reaction upon their arrival. Against her better judgment, neither had alerted Enid of her impending arrival, Tanaka thinking it better they leave it as a surprise. A surprise it would be. Wednesday merely hoped it was a well received one.
___
The driver opened the back door, dragging both of their cases to the front step, offering a curt wave before hopping into his vehicle and driving off. There was no reason to knock, the door swung open revealing a tall lanky boy a few years older than them. His blonde hair fell every which way on his head, the ends colored with green and blues, reminding Wednesday so much of Enid’s own.
The boy held out his fist to Yoko, a wide smile pulling at his lips. “Ayy, vampire dude!”
Yoko did the same, raising her glasses to get a better look at him. “Holy shit, Wally, look at you!”
Wally’s eyes flicked to Wednesday, before returning to Yoko. “Wait… is that her?” He asked in awe, taking a not so subtle sniff around them.
Wednesday crossed her arms, suddenly feeling defensive. She tuned out the rest of their conversation, having no desire to entertain anyone other than Tanaka at the moment. If only their pleasantries could be cut short, her patience was wearing thin, being kept from Enid when she was so close was down right torture.
Someone cleared their throat, drawing Wednesday from her mind. The pair stared at her expectantly. Wednesday gave them a bored look in return. Wally held his hand out, which she promptly ignored. After several awkward moments, all on his part, the boy dropped his hand, giving her a small smile. “I’m Wally, Enid’s older brother.”
“Wednesday Addams.” Was all she offered, nails digging into her arms the longer they stood around. She tried to steal a glance over his shoulder for any sight of Enid. Her nose wasn’t very useful either, the distinguishable scent of her wolf buried under all the others.
Wally’s smile brightened, catching on to her. “Enid’s not here, but she’ll be back soon.” He opened the door wider, stepping aside to let them in. “You guys can wait up in her room. Yoko, the spare room was set up for you like usual. If I had known you were bringing company-”
“It will not be necessary.” Wednesday cut him off. Having been roommates for so long, even going so far as to share a bed several times, she no longer felt the desire to have her own separate space away from Enid. She reached down for her luggage-
“Oh! Let me take those for you.” Wally scooped up their bags, unnecessary as Wednesday had no trouble caring for her own but saw it prudent to reject, dashing up the stairs and out of sight.
Esther appeared from around the corner to greet them, blocking the stairs. “Yoko,” Esther said skeptically. “Always the… pleasure.” She said, offering up a strained smile. Yoko, hardly phased, gave a fang filled smile.
“Mrs. Sinclair, thank you for inviting us,” Yoko said, with an unfamiliar politeness. Wednesday’s eyebrows shot up under her bangs. Inviting them? As long as she’d known Enid, Esther had never been known for doing anything out of the kindness of her heart. While they met briefly some time ago, Wednesday could come to such a conclusion already. When Yoko proposed they fly out together, she wasn’t aware of the extra stipulation. Something to interrogate the leech over later.
Esther grimaced, hands held tightly before her. “If you would give us a moment, I haven’t quite properly introduced myself to your friend here.”
Yoko straightened with a nod and disappeared up the stairs. Esther gestured to the kitchen. “Shall we?” Mutely, Wednesday followed behind, unsure of where this would go. Based on the older woman’s scent, she was clearly uneasy. Odd given it appeared rather out of character for herself.
Esther gathered ingredients from all over the kitchen, placing them on the counter. She grabbed a knife, offering one to Wednesday, which she readily took. If things went south, perhaps she could put it to good use. Despite her hesitance, not wanting to turn her back on Esther, Wednesday chopped the food without a word, moving with excellent craftsmanship.
“You saved my daughter’s life.” Esther started, stirring a dish on the stove. Unsure of what to say, Wednesday merely waited for her to continue. “Contrary to what Enid may think, I only want the best for her.”
“If that were true, you wouldn’t demean and belittle her. Your words have a lasting effect, one in which you aren’t even present enough to notice.” Wednesday bit out, mincing a tomato far more than the rest.
Esther sighed tiredly. “I’m only trying to prepare her for the world. You're an Addams, you know the kind of horrors of being everything society fears.”
“There is no excuse for treating her the way you do. If you had even a modicum of knowledge about the kind of person she is, you would know she does not deserve a mother like you. Or her spineless father.”
The stirring stopped. Esther fiddled with the spoon. In the lingering silence, Wednesday prepared for Esther to refute the claim, send her away for daring to speak out against her, but Wednesday only heard a weary sigh. “I know. In spite of everything, she’s grown into such an astounding young woman.” Wednesday gripped the knife, catching herself from dicing the next vegetable too far. In their incredibly minor interactions, she never once heard the unbridled pride from the older wolf’s tone. Nonetheless, it wouldn’t erase years of torment done to Enid. But Wednesday couldn’t eviscerate the thought things weren’t all they appeared. She felt ashamed for even such a thing. It was up for Enid to decide if the truth was something she sought.
“If you bothered to tell her that every once in a while, perhaps your fractured relationship wouldn’t be nearly as unrectifiable.” Wednesday stated bluntly, reveling in the heavy scent of guilt mixing in with the fresh ingredients aroma.
“What is it you wished to speak about? Certainly you aren’t attempting to garner my favor so I will sway Enid in your direction.” Wednesday carried the vegetables over to the counter beside the stove, Esther quickly taking them.
“I was skeptical at first, when she told me it was you she chose. It hurts me to say, but Enid doesn’t need me anymore. By pack law, she’s practically an adult. And it’s not like I could stop her anyway.” Esther covered the pot, wringing her hands as she turned to Wednesday.
“If this is your version of ensuring I treat Enid far better than yourself. Believe me, that isn’t much of a challenge. One I will exceed effortlessly.” Esther deflated, looking ready to say more when a blonde figure whirled into the room.
They both whipped their heads around, hearing the front door crack back against the wall. Esther shook her head, muttering as the figure collided with Wednesday, knocking her back a step. Wednesday tensed, muscles going lax when a sweet scent filled her nostrils. Strong arms wrapped around her midsection. Enid buried her nose into her neck.
Wednesday quickly reciprocated, sliding her arms around Enid’s shoulders, tugging them impossibly closer.
“God, I’ve missed you so much.” Enid whispered hoarsely.
For the first time since they departed their separate ways, Wednesday felt a sense of saccharine calmness spread over her. She carded a hand through blonde hair, taking in her own deep shuddering breath. “The feeling is incredibly mutual.”
Enid pulled back, bracing her cool hands on Wednesday’s cheeks, looking ready to lean in before seeming to remember they weren’t alone. Wednesday’s lips twitched, watching Enid’s eyes blow wide as she whipped around, taking Wednesday’s hand as she stared at her mom.
“Mom,” Enid said timidly, killing Wednesday’s light mood and reminding her of their circumstances.
Esther frowned, looking down at their point of contact. “Door open always, unless you're going to bed. Understand?”
Enid nodded, dragging Wednesday out of the room, eager to escape the prying eyes of her mother. Wednesday let her of course, rendered pliant under Enid’s touch the second they embraced. They walked to the second floor, coming to a stop at the first door. Enid didn’t bother knocking, going right in.
Yoko looked up from where she was reclined back against the bed, a wide smirk already glued to her features. Wednesday was beginning to think it was the only facial expression she was capable of.
“Yoko! Why didn’t you tell me you were bringing Wednesday?” Enid pouted, leading them over to the edge of the bed, taking a seat and dragging Wednesday next to her.
“Admit it was a nice surprise.”
“Fine. It was, but still you should’ve told me,” Enid whined.
Pleasant jolts racked Wednesday’s body as their shoulders brushed. She would never grow tired of Enid’s touch. “Would you advise we refrain from doing so in the future? I can always return at a later date if that is preferable.” She teased, momentarily pulling away, only to be squashed once more against Enid.
“Absolutely not.” Enid growled, tugging Wednesday into her lap, encircling her arms around her waist and resting her head on her shoulder. Normally such a display would be revolting, but since the expansion of Wednesday’s companionship with Yoko, she didn’t mind such a display. Her wolf agreed, letting out a quiet trill, one which Wednesday unfortunately was unable to tamp down on in time.
Wednesday flushed, glaring at Yoko, who bit back a growing smirk. Enid merely traced her fingers over Wednesday’s, letting out her own quiet hum, all too pleased to be reunited with her mate.
“So,” Yoko broke the silence, having had enough of the grossly smitten pair, making her miss Divina impossibly more. “What should we actually do today? Being third wheel is not fun, I don’t know how you do it, Pup.”
Enid straightened up, fingers drumming excitedly over Wednesday’s. “Beach Day!” Wednesday internally groaned, knowing she couldn’t deny it from her paramour, it was long overdue after all. Though a day languidly lazing around on disgusting minuscule grains of rocks was unappealing in itself, having Enid would make it all the more worth it.
_____
The trio spent the remainder of the day at a nearby lake, Enid deciding to stick close to home for once, given she knew how much Wednesday would probably be antsy to return. Much to her annoyance though, her brothers took the invitation to join along, only after Enid made them promise to leave them alone while they were there. Given both their allergy to the sun, it was really only Yoko, the two posted up beneath one of the large oak trees, sprawled out against a picnic blanket.
Wednesday brought a giant book, how she lugged those around everywhere Enid would never guess, making herself comfortable against the thick bark and read. She’d changed into much lighter clothes, a striped black and white short-sleeved shirt and black khaki shorts, despite the mid nineties weather, and Wednesday's ridiculously high body temp didn’t make it any easier. Enid was just happy her mate was even out here, so she left Wednesday to read, forcing Yoko out into the cool water with her.
They splashed around a while, catching up on the latest gossip in the world, eventually landing on the topic of their girlfriends. Enid couldn’t help but let her gaze drift back to Wednesday every now and again, each time the raven looked over her book to meet her, never once failing to make Enid blush. Yoko eventually had to take a break, to avoid sun poisoning and all, leaving Enid to wrestle around with her brothers Gray and Wally. Felix was away for the break, claiming a last minute trip to Argentina for whatever reason, and Damian was off with some of the other wolf pups on a retreat.
It was only late in the evening, the sun falling low beneath the tree line, did they return home. Enid gathered her clothes, opting to change in the bathroom, leaving her room for Wednesday. She caught a glimpse of herself in the mirror, noting the visible tan on her bare shoulders. Woah, it was definitely worse than she thought. She totally forgot to reapply sunscreen, her obvious peeling shoulders reminding her of that.
Enid turned around, curious to see how bad it got, pausing as a flash of black caught her eye, but when she looked there was nothing there. Turning her head every which way, she was probably just imagining things, when she saw it again. Enid leaned forward, nose practically brushing against the glass as she parted a strand of hair. There, a strand of black hair was mixed in with her blonde ones. Enid pulled back, face contouring in confusion. She didn’t think there were any left from Xavier’s work, the phantom sensation eliciting a shiver from the wolf as she remembered his forceful grip in her hair.
Enid opened her eyes, not realizing she closed them, shaking off the memory. She shrugged, letting the lone strand blend back into the rest, it was probably nothing. Enid switched out of her wet bathing suit, taking a quick shower to wash off the lake water, and returned to her room.
_____
Wednesday looked around the small space, her black bags sticking out horrendously against the explosion of color. She moved around the room with a surprising ounce of familiarity given her limited time spent in it, taking a seat at Enid’s desk. The surface was overflowing with objects, haphazardly sprawled everywhere, some hovering close to the edge. Wednesday raised a brow, grateful this level of disorganization was limited in their dorm. She could only imagine the amount of chaos would ensue if she wasn’t so firm about keeping their room tidy.
Yoko was off in the separate room just down the hall, her voice striking in Wednesday’s ears as she unintentionally followed along the conversation with her siren paramour. Wednesday tuned it out, scanning over the space. It was nothing she hadn’t seen before, given Enid’s obsessive over consumption issue, only dialed higher. Posters covered every wall, every surface was gravely overcrowded. To top it all off, horrifyingly bright colors clashed at every which way Wednesday looked. In any other case, Wednesday would’ve gained a relentless migraine, having to duck out of the room immediately upon entering the threshold, but she’d learned to adjust rapidly since striking up her courtship with the blonde.
Wednesday was pulled from her observations, hearing footsteps padding softly against the carpeted floor. Enid peaked her head into the room, giving her a soft smile. She deposited her clothes in her laundry basket, reclining back in her bed. Wednesday spun in the chair, turning fully to face Enid.
“Thank you for indulging me at the creek. What do you wanna do next?”
Wednesday nodded slightly, eyes darting to the empty space by Enid’s side. “I would not oppose watching another one of your movies. I’ve found myself intrigued by the talking animal genre.”
Enid brightened, snatching her computer from her nightstand, beckoning Wednesday over, to which she readily complied. “I have the perfect one.” Wednesday briefly skimmed over the premise, falling back against Enid’s side. A trio of animals traversing through the icy landscapes? Wednesday looked to Enid with a questioning hum, but Enid merely smiled, giving nothing away.
Enid clicked play, flicking off the main light in favor of her fairy lights. As the film played out, Wednesday had to admit she was fascinated by the Smilodon, the only one seeming to have a pack, albeit incredibly dysfunctional. Wednesday let her head tip onto Enid’s shoulder, feeling the first dredges of drowsiness pulling her under.
“Tomorrow's the full moon.” Enid whispered. Wednesday had foolishly forgotten suddenly more awake. She hadn’t dared to shift after the events of her stalkers’ not wishing to deny fate twice. Whatever it was Enid had done to allow her to shift back, Wednesday wasn’t so sure if it needed to be utilized again. Assuming it could. Though she was more aligned with her wolf this past month, having some understanding of the beast lurking under her skin, who was to say what awaited her?
Wednesday swallowed thickly, forcing her uncertainty down with it. “I know.” She returned quietly, eyes not daring to look away from the small screen. Enid grabbed her hand, intertwining their fingers, the action washing away some of her unprecedented feelings.
___
Wednesday paced nervously in the backyard, more woods really, as there was no kind of fencing marking the end of the property. 20 steps forward, 20 back. That’s how many steps she could fit between Enid and the nearest tree. She repeated the motion, the uncomfortable buzz of energy lingering just out of reach. Oh, how she couldn’t wait to rid herself of it. Enid watched nervously, legs bouncing from her place on the stairs.
They chose to shift alone, away from the other wolves, Enid’s family moving deeper into the woods to give them privacy. Something else to focus on at least. Esther had been surprisingly docile, uttering scarce words to her daughter at a meal, leaving the two alone besides that. It was certainly strange, the behavior not aligning with the past instances Wednesday recalled.
There was a benefit, however, Enid hadn’t been quite as on edge, carefree to enjoy their now shared break together. Though it was only the second day so Wednesday couldn’t be sure what awaited them the longer the week progressed.
Wednesday felt the telltale pull of the moon, forcing her every thought to the back of her mind. She could feel the effect it had on her wolf, urging it free from its confines, though it was far more muted than she’d been anticipating. Wednesday remained rooted to the spot, staring up at the moon's glow, yet now it didn’t seem so strong. The terrible weight of energy building all day diminished, allowing her to regain her bearings properly since she’d risen for the day. Behind her, the soft grunts of pain emanate from Enid as she shifted. Wednesday turned, stalking over carefully to reacquaint herself with such a powerful form. She’d half closed the distance when her own shift passed over her.
She dropped to her knees, a persistent burning spreading through her blood to every inch of her body. Wednesday braced her forearms against the ground, biting back sounds of pain as incredibly slow, her body tore in on itself, breaking bones and shifting skin. All the while, her clothes stretched and ripped away under the stress. After an indiscernible amount of time, just as Wednesday thought she would black out from the pain, the fire licking her finger tips, her jaw, and around every inch of her body, cooled. Wednesday stood, only this time on four limbs rather than two. Her shiny black pelt, a stark contrast to Enid’s light one, highlighted in the dim rays of the moon.
Wednesday shook out her fur, ears swiveling to catch the many different howls seeming to surround her from every side. Her nose twitched, senses far greater in this form than the other, ciphering through the many smells of the vast forest. Enid trotted over, brushing their sides together, drawing Wednesday’s eyes to her. Every werewolf was far larger than the average wolf, but Enid clearly surpassed that scale, nearly having an entire foot over Wednesday in this form. Her tail twitched timidly, tongue lolling out of her mouth as she let out a loud bark.
Blazing orange eyes met yellow, observing her carefully, Wednesday’s tail twitching once in return. Enid barked again, sniffing excitedly over every possible inch of the black wolf. Wednesday let her, sitting back on her haunches, far too pleased, merely letting Enid carry on.
Enid circled around once more, stopping at Wednesday’s front. She nosed her snout along Wednesday's snout, snuffling curiously as she did. Wednesday lightly nipped at her, to which Enid grumbled yet continued on.
If it were possible in this form, Wednesday would’ve rolled her eyes, yet she didn’t object to the thorough examination. Deciding finally she was satisfied, Enid backed up several steps, dropping into a play bow with a loud excited bark. Wednesday’s ears perked up, doing the same and launched herself at the other wolf. They tussled along the dirt, Wednesday twisting every which way to nip at Enid’s exposed forelimbs, engaging in a short game of chase quickly ending after Enid nose dived into a deep puddle, mud drenching the white fur of her snout entirely than having the audacity to nuzzle into Wednesday.
Letting instinct guide her, Wednesday let her tongue trail over Enid’s snout repeatedly, clearing away the mud, the whole time a loud purr thundering in Enid’s chest as her wagging tail shook her entire backside. Wednesday chuffed, laying down, properly exhausted from their play. Enid instantly pressed behind her, curling her larger form around the black wolf, grooming the top of her head. Wednesday's ears pressed back against her head, letting out a displeased grumble, Enid ignoring the sound.
A dry chuckle sounded from the back door. Wednesday’s ears popped back up, before down turning. She glared at the intruder, a low growl kick-starting in her chest as Yoko dared to approach. Enid’s ears twitched, but carried on, nipping the other wolf’s ear for good measure. The growl quickly ceased, Wednesday dropped her head down onto her paws, orange eyes never once leaving Yoko’s figure.
Enid stood to meet the vampire, sneezing as she approached. Wednesday felt slighted by the loss of the blonde, turning away from the display to groom her paws. Her ears swiveled back and forth, catching the rather disturbing amount of cooing from Yoko, and the quiet thumps of Enid’s leg against the ground. Unbelievable.
Slowly the gray light brightened the sky, the moon beginning its descent. Wednesday’s form shrank, fur retreating to reveal tan skin and a disarray of black hair, Enid wasn’t much better, her blonde hair sticking up from every direction. Enid grabbed her discarded robe, handing Wednesday a matching one, leading them both back inside. As they headed back up the long flight of stairs, Yoko poked her head out from her room, a teasing remark already on her tongue.
“Never speak of this to anyone.” Wednesday glowered at her, quickly moving inside back up to Enid’s room. Enid, as always, close behind.
_____
Enid closed the door behind them with a quiet click. A dull throbbing racked her entire body, making her long for sleep. They stared at each other for a moment, a silent conversation passing between them as Enid noted the same exhaustion reflected in deep brown eyes.
Both too tired to do much else, Wednesday fell back on the colorful bed first, hair scattered all across the pillow case like a fallen angel, motioning for Enid to follow. An offer which she happily accepted, loving every ounce of Wednesday’s newfound craving of physical touch. Enid slipped between Wednesday’s legs, resting her head on her stomach, reaching up and bringing their hands together. A tranquil air settled in the air, both easily falling asleep under the exhaustion of the night.
Before she managed to drift off entirely into deep sleep, Enid felt the bed dip slightly, water lilies and typewriter ink passing by her head. By the time she worked her way up to a semi-conscious state a while later, Enid brushed it off, digging her nose into the soft fabric of Wednesday’s robe.
___
A furious knocking at her door startled them awake. Enid sat up, pressing a hand against Wednesday’s chest, anticipating the inevitable growl. Enid ran a hand over her face, as if it would wipe away her lingering exhaustion, untangling from the splayed limbs, and approached the door. It was probably just her brothers being annoying to mess with her.
Enid whipped open the door, more than ready to send her brothers away, but it was Yoko who stood at the door, knuckles raised to knock again. “Yoko? What-”
“Enid you two need to come downstairs. Right now.” Yoko said gravely, face frozen in fear. Enid wiped the sleep from her eyes, chancing a look back at Wednesday who was already on her feet. A foreboding sense of dread filled Enid’s stomach, growing worse when the raven took her hand. They silently trailed after Yoko, stopping in the main foyer where her parents and two brothers stood, the somber mood tainting them as well. Enid hoped one of them would explain, but other than her mother, they avoided eye contact, even Yoko, wrapping a hand around herself.
“Guys? What’s going on?” Enid asked, waiting for a response. It wasn’t one of them who answered, but a man standing at the door, with a grim look.
“Miss Sinclair.” The man paused, flashing his badge for the pair to read. A detective? Last Enid checked, Galpin long closed the case regarding everything, so what could he possibly want? “As I’ve just informed your family, Micheal Arison was found dead last night a few miles away from here.”
Enid balked. Mike? What was he doing out here? The last she’d heard about him, his father dragged him home by the scruff after his very public fight with Wednesday. But he and his family were part of the southern California pack. Enid was sure his pack hadn’t come up for the full moon, not smelling any unfamiliar scents. Something wasn’t right.
“He was brutally murdered, almost unrecognizable from his wounds.” The detective continued on, not even aware of Enid’s shock. The detective pulled out a pair of handcuffs, heading for the pair. Enid’s heart raced as he drew closer. This couldn’t be happening. Her grip on Wednesday’s became bone crushing, her breathing shortened, quick and shallow. This was it wasn’t it. Her punishment for killing Xavier and not feeling guilty.
Enid stayed rooted to the spot, but the detective wasn’t looking at her. No, his eyes strayed over her shoulder. To Wednesday.
“Wednesday Addams,” He spoke, breaking their hands apart to wrap the metal- no silver cuffs around Wednesday’s wrist. “You're under arrest for the grievous murder of Micheal Arison.”
Enid felt her entire world shatter.
