A Blessing and A Curse

Chapter 60: Year 2: More to Come in the Hereafter

Summary:

Wesker apprehensively celebrates his second year of being free surrounded by his found family and all those who love him.

Chapter Text

It was not unusual for the extended-found family to have Sunday brunches, but for some reason, Wesker felt like something was off.

Yes, it was the second anniversary of his salvation from captivity, but there was something else. Something he could not quite put his finger on.

Everyone seemed exceptionally jovial, despite the occasion. Well, it was a celebration of sorts. He remembered his 1st anniversary—a fiasco where he’d missed several medicines and had violent withdrawal symptoms and hallucinations. It had been absolutely dreadful and the thought caused Wesker to shiver violently.

A large hand squeezed his shoulder, causing his to glance over quickly. Chris. A concerned look on his face, “Everything alright, Babe?”

“Just… remembering how everything went last year.”

“Jesus, please don’t remind me. That was… let’s make some new memories, yeah?” A quick kiss caught Wesker’s breath and before he realized he had been kissed, the lips were gone and Chris was grinning, patting his shoulder.

The grin was infectious, and Wesker couldn’t help but return it, gaze lingering before returning to enjoy observing those who had stayed by his side during thick and thin.

The lively conversations. Sherry. Jill. Jake. Dr. Amonte. Chris. Even Dion had visited. It had been so long, and they had hugged for a good long while.

Now, mostly through the meal, he eyed the few small gifts that were littered along the center of the table. All for him, of course.

He wasn’t really one for such things, but he did not want to disappoint those who had brought him something to celebrate the occasion.

Barely, thinking, he snatched one of the smaller envelopes up, opening it slowly. It was a handmade card from Dr. Amonte with a heartfelt message. He caught her gaze and she clasped her hands with barely held back tears. He silently mouthed ‘thank you’ in return as he read it several more times.

Next was a bright red envelope. Wesker could not tell who it was from. The writing was overly nice. Opening it, he quickly smashed it back closed before it could start singing what he could only assume was something raunchy and obnoxious.

“Pervy sneak!”

Jill rolled her eyes playfully, shrugging, “I couldn’t help myself, Sweet Cheeks.”

Heart calmed down, and the raunchy card stuffed away safely in his jacket pocket, Wesker gulped down half a glass of water. Wiping his mouth on a napkin, he eyed his next gift.

There was a medium size box that Wesker had been curious about throughout the afternoon that was slightly out of reach and with the now relaxed atmosphere, stood slowly to use his cane to drag the object to where it was within reach for him to pick up. Plopping back into his chair with a slight twinge, Wesker regarded it as from Jake and Sherry and he smiled in their direction.

While inspecting the box, the room had quieted slightly from the buzzing it had been only moments before. There were a few phone cameras on him but he had learned to ignore the tiny lights as he undid the simple black and white bow.

Opening it, it was filled with finely cut crinkled paper, and there was a small encouragement of ‘come on now, get digging’ from Jill. Pushing paper aside trying to ignore the mess falling outside the box and into his lap and on the floor, his brows pinched in confusion as he arrived at a clear box.

After a few moments of trying to figure out what it was he was looking at he gently lifted off the outer covering of the clear box which held a case with three pairs of sunglasses set inside of it.

Except two were very well much too small for him to wear.

There were several ‘come on, what is it’ and ‘show us’ but even more telling was the giggling and he slowly brought his eyes up to Jake and Sherry questioningly.

“Come on, Dad! Take it out! There’s more underneath!”

He placed the box on the table to review two small pieces of clothing with “sweet little blessing” written on the front and two sets of tiny socks.

It only took a moment longer, before Wesker’s eyes widened, mouth gaping and the entire group had shushed low enough they could hear the blond’s neck crack as he snapped his attention to Sherry.

“Wait, w-what?!”

Sniffling, she pressed her hands against her belly. He couldn’t believe he hadn’t caught it before, but she was glowing. She managed to choke out as she rounded the table toward him as he rose back to his feet, arms wide open as he caught her as she fell into his arms, “Sherry… Jake… C-congratulations! I’m so happy for you… both of you.”

He glanced down at the tiny sunglasses. Two… Two onsies. Two sets of socks.

“Two. Twins.”

If he thought yesterday life could be any more breathtaking. He was so very wrong.

“I’m going to be… a grandfather.”

There were cheers all around the table, but Wesker still had not let Sherry go. But he knew he had to. As he let her drift back, he kissed her forehead, holding each of her hands in his.

“You will be a wonderful mother.”

She smiled tearfully, smiling brightly nodding in agreement, “Thank you, Dad.”

Whispering softly, Wesker murmured for her ears only, “They would be so very proud, Sherry. So very proud.”

“I know. I know. I miss them so much.”

He couldn’t help but pull her back in as he gazed down at the gifts. “I do too, my Dear.”

It was then Jake came and hugged them both. “It’s going to be an adventure, that’s for sure!”

He wasn’t there to be a father to Jake, but he would be there to see his grandchildren be born and grow up.

It was more than he ever imagined he’d be able to experience in this life.
